  1. What happened tonight?published at 22:48 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

Manchester United have basically booked their place in the Europa League final, while Arsenal are still in with a chance despite looking in huge trouble.

United thrashed Roma 6-2 with doubles from Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes, having trailed at the break, while Arsenal lost 2-1 at Villarreal – having been 2-0 down and down to 10 men at one stage.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: "We didn't want to come here and lose but after the way the game developed, you have to take the result. If you have to lose it is probably the best result we could have.”

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Neil Lennon said “it was like the good old days” for United.

“A fantastic night for Manchester United and a good night for Ole too. He had a big team talk at half time and the players responded in spectacular fashion,” he said.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said “I don’t feel the job is done but it was a good job done”.

    FT: Villarreal 2-1 Arsenal

Villarreal boss Unai Emery speaking to BT Sport: "We had chances to score the third goal and that was our plan. The penalty is not a penalty and we deserved this victory.

"We will play there with the same plan, to control and show our personality."

  4. Gunners see redpublished at 22:38 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

    FT: Villarreal 2-1 Arsenal

This was just the second time in their 10 European semi-finals that Arsenal have lost the first leg, also doing so in the 2008-09 Champions League against Manchester United.

The Gunners have been shown 10 red cards in all competitions under Mikel Arteta, twice as many as any other Premier League side in the period since he took over in December 2019.

Nicolas Pepe has been involved in more goals in the UEFA Europa League this season than any other player (10 – 6 goals, 4 assists).

Dani Ceballos picked up his first red card in all competitions for a team playing in the top five European leagues (201st game).

Roma defender Chris Smalling to BT Sport: "Massively [disappointing]. Especially that we couldn't capitalise on the first half. Just pure disappointment in the second half. The goals we conceded were sloppy. It's really ruined the hard work of the first half.

"This season we've had a lot of injures. It's not an excuse for conceding so many goals but it's not ideal preparation."

  8. 'Creative players who can create big moments'published at 22:27 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

    FT: Man Utd 6-2 Roma

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to BT Sport: "No I don't feel the job is done but it was a good job done. We did well but we know they have quality.

"They scored two goals from the two chances we gave them. They didn't have loads of chances against Ajax.

"The second half was very good."

On being told pundits Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes would have made midfield changes at half-time: "It's easy up there thinking who should play... but who should not play?

"That's a very good team, it worked really good against Tottenham. Mason Greenwood should be disappointed not to be playing but it's about balance. Maybe those two should try to leave players out and pick a team with balance.

"We know we have got creative players who can create big moments. Paul Pogba's position today was very good in that position, he's allowed some freedom. He's got the foundation behind him. The diference today is we took most of our chances.

"The character showed that they came back and didn't lose their heads. Maybe five or 10 minutes at the end of the first half, we didn't look great but we got ourselves together. The two goals are junior, schoolboy errors that shouldn't happen at this level."

  9. 'We have a chance to win'published at 22:23 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

    FT: Villarreal 2-1 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on BT Sport: "We didn't want to come here and lose but after the way the game developed, you have to take the result. If you have to lose it is probably the best result we could have.

"Two different halves. We started to be us, in the first half there were so many moments we weren't.

"We started to chase and were not precise with the ball, didn't have enough control. We didn't have enough threat or desire to attack the box, in the second half it was completely different.

"We are very used to that (Bukayo Saka playing well) this season, but it tells us we need to do much more as we cannot always rely on him. Bernd Leno was very good, at 2-0, the chance with Gerard Moreno, he saved us.

"We had a big chance with Auba to draw the game. I am confident we have a chance to win."

    FT: Villarreal 2-1 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal's Bukayo Saka speaking to BT Sport: "There are a lot of positives in the second half, it's a semi-final and to start the game like that... we didn't create anything, were passive, lost every duel. I'm happy in the second half we picked ourselves and have given us a chance at the Emirates.

"We showed we are better than them, even with 10 men, so it is up to us. When we play properly we can beat anyone."

  12. Superb effort from Man Utdpublished at 22:14 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

    Man Utd 6-2 Roma

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Two goals and three assists for Edinson Cavani, two goals and two assists for Bruno Fernandes. It has been a superb night for Manchester United.

It is impossible to see Roma turn this around in the Italian capital next week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first silverware as United boss is within reach.

    FT: Man Utd 6-2 Roma

Manchester United are the first side to score six goals in a major European semi-final since Real Madrid in the European Cup in May 1964.

This was the first time United have scored six in a European game... since they scored seven against Roma 14 years ago.

  14. 'It's not finished'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

    FT: Man Utd 6-2 Roma

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalscorer Paul Pogba to BT Sport: "The result is positive but it's not finished. We will have to say focused and play a nice game with the same mentality.

"In the first half we had two mistakes and conceded two goals. We were a bit all over the place after the second goal.

"At half-time we said let's do the right things, let's do simple things. The manager spoke. We were all motivated to score as many goals as possible."

On the penalty decision against him: "Just don't tackle. I don't know how to tackle. I try to be the English guy. I need to practise more. I need to practise to tackle wthout arms. It's unlucky. I've been unlucky a lot this season with penalties."

We're just seeing the Arsenal penalty back.

It's quick feet from Bukayo Saka and he had a great game tonight, but was that a foul? Almost looked like he initiated the contact with Manu Trigueros instead of the other way round.

    Mikel Arteta won't care.

    FT: Villarreal 2-1 Arsenal

    Conor McNamara

A very exciting semi-final first leg. Arsenal started terribly in Spain. The two-legged semi-final was in danger of being over but then the pendulum swung back in Arsenal's favour. Mikel Arteta will feel a lot better about things than he might have done. They have salvaged an awful lot out of it and still have a decent chance of reaching the final.

Arsenal looked completely out of that at 2-0 down and down to 10 men, but that seemed to spur Mikel Arteta's side on. A vital away goal from Nicolas Pepe means they might just be the happier of the two sides this evening.
