Unbelievable - Paul Pogba's unfortunate but his arm is up in an unnatural position. I hate this rule - my sympathies are with Pogba because he's making a genuine attempt to block. In the old days that wouldn't have been given but these days it's a penalty.

Manchester United's lead doesn't last long. Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini steps up and blasts it into the net. David de Gea goes the right way and is close but can't get a touch.

    Villarreal 1-0 Arsenal

What can Arsenal conjure up here? It's a start as bright as their iconic shirts for Villarreal, who look like a team full of confidence now - the Gunners not so much... as Thomas Partey leaks a pass out of play.

Roma get a penalty. Paul Pogba is sliding for the ball with Rick Karsdorp, who clips the ball into the air. It hits Pogba's arms and that's a pen.

What a great goal - effortless from Paul Pogba the way he drifted through the midfield, played a lovely ball to Edinson Cavani. He's sort of going down and slides it into Bruno Fernandes and it's a wonderful, sublime finish. Pogba brilliant, Cavani's lay off was brilliant and the finish is magnificent. What a start!

    Villarreal 1-0 Arsenal

That's the earliest Arsenal have conceded in European competition since September 2016, when Edinson Cavani scored against them after 42 seconds for Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.

    Bruno Fernandes (9 mins)

A lovely goal for Manchester United.

Paul Pogba gets the ball with his back to goal and glides past a couple of players. He plays it to Edinson Cavani, who knocks a first-time pass into the path of Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese waits for Pau Lopez to go to ground and just clips it over him into the net.

    Manu Trigueros (5 mins)

What a start for the hosts!

It was Juan Foyth, the on-loan Tottenham defender, who went rampaging forward and Villarreal then work it into the box through Samuel Chukwueze on the right.

The ball broke inside the area and coming on to it like a steam train was Manu Trigueros to lash a low, right-footed effort into the bottom corner with the first shot of the game.

Interested to know other United fans opinions but for me finishing a distant second to our local rivals without a trophy is NOT a good season at all.

It may not be a popular view from these shores, but I'd love to see a Villarreal v Roma final... a match for the purists!

Stomping ground feels like a very old-school phrase. I can't imagine many teenagers saying stomping ground.

Villarreal knock it out smartly from the back, looking to beat the press of their visitors.

The Gunners win it back in midfield and look to release Nicolas Pepe, but he's just offside.

I'm looking forward to seeing Edin Dzeko play, I've been a big fan of his for a while. I'm also interested to see how Chris Smalling gets on back on his old stomping ground, he was getting some good reports earlier in the season.
