    Manchester United 1-2 Tottenham

Deciding the day before the end of the window that you need to spend £100m on a defender is not the best planning - oh no wait that sounds about spot on.

    Can Cavani play centre-half?

If you're the hierarchy at Manchester United you're watching this and you would go and spend £50-100m on a centre back. They need to get someone to improve this team.

Harry Maguire gives away the free-kick and doesn't react but Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min reacted.

You don't get many opening 10 minutes quite like that. Manchester United's defence looking about as stable as the cinema industry.

You've got to say that defensively, the two centre-halves, that first goal has highlighted that United need a centre back. It's a terrible header from Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly as well and it was weak from Luke Shaw.

Just silly now! What a start!

Harry Maguire has started this game in Sunday League style. He gives away a free-kick for a push on Harry Kane and is then caught out as Kane plays it quickly through the middle to Son.

He's onside, and he's about as clinical as it gets on one-on-ones these days. Clips in with his left foot!

A crazy start to proceedings at Old Trafford. All the fun of the fair. Mason Greenwood now lamps a shot wide from the edge of the area.

Was Luke Shaw fouled? It was a terrible header by Harry Maguire but I'm not sure Erik Lamela has fouled Shaw. Manchester United need a defender.

    Tanguy Ndombele (4 mins)

Deffo sign another striker, that's the number one priority for Manchester United right?

Some absolutely awful defending sees Harry Maguire twice head the ball into a dangerous area instead of away, Luke Shaw doesn't cover himself in glory either and eventually Tanguy Ndombele decides to pick up the loose ball and smash it in from about four yards out.

It was a silly challenge by Davidson Sanchez. The technique from Bruno Fernandes is unbelievable, the eyes are focused solely on the goalkeeper and he's just waiting for him to move.

A sure thing isn't he. Bruno Fernandes runs up, does his little Jorginho skip, and just passes it into the corner.

It's too early to say if Jose Mourinho has improved Tottenham. He's had a short three or four week pre-season, but now we'll find out, because this is his team. They've made some very, very good signings.

We'll now find out if Mourinho has improved them. Not today, but over the next 10-15 games.

Jose Mourinho has a big smile on his face as he takes his seat in the stands. Dele Alli does not.

It's a bold move by Spurs getting Carlos Vinicius in. If it doesn't work for him he can just go back to Benfica or somewhere else. There's a lot of factors that come into a move - how often you'll play and money.

It's a specialist role being that sub or filling in for Harry Kane when he gets injured. It's a difficult role to be in but if you back yourself to get the goals when you get the chance then fair play to you for making that move.

At the moment I think the hierarchy are letting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down.

They've only brought in one player so far, and while the manager won't say it, the hierarchy with their inertia have let the manager down.

Here come the sides at Old Trafford - the sprinklers are on which, given how much rain we had yesterday, seems a bit unnecessary.

  18. 'Cavani smacks of desperation'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 4 October 2020

Man Utd v Tottenham (16:30 BST)

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

Where is the planning and the strategy? What direction are they heading in if all of a sudden, a club the stature of Manchester United, with just over 24 overs to go until the deadline closes, are doing late business?

I get why they are pursuing Alex Telles, that might have been a sticking point with Porto holding out for a certain fee but Edinson Cavani smacks of desperation. Nobody can say he's been a target for all that time, if he has been he's a player that was out of contract at the end of June. It just smacks of a club that lacks a clear plan of transfer recruitment and I find it worrying. They are not addressing their weakness either.

Edison Cavani is a focal point and he will improve the squad. I know he's 33 but we can't forget his record, he's not a rubbish player. He will still offer a lot.

Will he be a Falcao or a Ibrahimovic? Nobody will know yet.
