Joe Collins: We should go on goals scored rather than goal difference to try get those teams at the bottom to attack more.

Tony Joseph: Watching a Big Sam team with a back six is as uncomfortable viewing as the unveiling of the Brussel sprouts at Xmas.

LoveFootyCritic: At the moment everyone is slating Allardyce for his negative football plan but if West Brom manages to get a point from this game, it would be hailed as Master Plan from Big Sam.

Georginio Wijnaldum tees up Jordan Henderson on the edge of the box and he smashes it. It swerves just wide of the right post.

    Decent effort.

Christian Evans: This game is just attack v defence. It's like when England play San Marino. West Brom need to show something second half.

BeauB: Big Sam has one job, to keep WBA in the top flight. He won't do that by having a go at Anfield & getting beat 8-0. A narrow defeat will actually be morale building & they can take that into future games.

Tom Sharpe: So, as others have mentioned, every team this season seems to be setting up to defend against Liverpool and hoping to keep them out. Except Villa...guess who Liverpool's only loss this season is to?

  8. 'It's handball'published at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2020

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes on Sky Sports: "I'm pleased with the draw, they showed resilience when we didn't play well. There are reasons for that first half performance, it could be the time of year, we've had lots of games and we were playing a good footballing team as well.

"We are without two players with pace so we were trying to find a way to play, it didn't work but our subs made a difference. We came back twice and that's pleasing.

"It would be harsh on Lewis Dunk to rule that goal out but it's handball in the new rules isn't it? That's the rules unless I can be told something different.

"We want to know we can come from behind, credit to the players for that. We showed determination."

  10. 'Horrible to watch and even more horrible to play in'published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2020

    HT: Liverpool 1-0 West Brom

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is one of the most one-sided matches I have watched in many, many years but it's still only 1-0.

I've watched West Brom since the start of the season and player for player they are going down. Sam has spotted that and said 'can I find a way of surviving'.

I don't blame Sam for doing it, but it is horrible to watch and even more horrible to play in when a manager does not believe in you as a group.

Sam has looked at what happened for Crystal Palace [losing 7-0 at home against Liverpool last week] and thought 'it could be worse than that'. He wants to get this one out of the way and if he gets a draw it will be the biggest fluke in the world."

  11. 'Frustration'published at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2020

    FT: West Ham 2-2 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter told BBC Sport: "Frustration is the emotion at the moment. We felt we did enough for three points but the second goal is the one that has punished us, and if you don't defend that situation better, you come away with just one point.

"Over the course of the game, I felt we did a lot well, particularity in the first half. It is hard to control 90 minutes of a Premier League game. You have to accept the opposition will step forward and show some momentum. After the goal, we felt more in control and to see it out better is the thing we have to improve on."

On his feeling when VAR reviews his side's goals: "You fear the worst and if you are pleasantly surprised, it is a bonus. Ben [White] does his best and he has some attributes that are very useful at this level. We missed Tariq Lamptey but Ben is a different player. We have got a few players learning and adapting to the league and we have to help them improve.

"We have had a lot of draws and our work is to turn those into wins. It sounds simple but the work is on the training ground. We have to stick together and every game is so complicated."

  12. 'The resilience of the players kept us going'published at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2020

    FT: West Ham 2-2 Brighton

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes told BBC Sport: "We saw a poor West Ham in the first half but we also saw a good Brighton team in the first half. They made it difficult for us but the resilience of the players kept us going and a few changes helped us.

"We thought it was the right time to have a look at a back five again but I felt we didn’t press them well enough. [Manuel] Lanzini has been an important player for us in recent years and I'm hoping to get him back to the levels he has been because he is a talented player and we needed that."

On Ben Johnson's performance: "Ben has been knocking on the door. He is predominately a right-back but he has payed left-back, so we thought we would see if he could do it and he did well."

"All the games in the Premier League are hard games and the unpredictability of the league has made the games a lot closer. We have an incredibly quick turnaround now."

David Lowe: Baggies fans now sounding like West Ham, Newcastle and Everton fans in their opinion of Allardyce, none of which is favourable especially re-his negative tactics.

Chris Mitchell: Curtis Jones is an outstanding young talent. Can see him breaking his way into the England squad before the Euros.

Oliver Camp: So, the accepted wisdom seems to be that you have to sit back and pack the defence against Liverpool to try to keep them out. But, as the table tells us, Liverpool are managing to win pretty much every game. Are we sure it isn't worth taking the game to them a bit?

  16. HALF-TIMEpublished at 17:17 Greenwich Mean Time 27 December 2020

    Liverpool 1-0 West Brom

Karlan Grant slides it through to Matt Phillips. He almost picks out Callum Robinson in the box but the flag is up.

And that's the half. West Brom have miraculously kept it to just 1-0 and that's the biggest positive you can pay them.

It is soul-destroying [for West Brom] to play this way. I do not think Sam Allardyce will do this all the way through the season.

He doesn't want his team to be hammered and if they had been really open they could be four or five down.

  19. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Liverpool 1-0 West Brom

Liverpool are toying with their food.

They move it around, creating space before whipping in crosses for Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

The latest is from Trent Alexander-Arnold but Salah gets way too much on the flick-on.

  20. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Liverpool 1-0 West Brom

Brilliant play from Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum as they acrobatically bring down some flicked passes in the middle.

Sadio Mane then teases the full-back before his cross flies over the head of Mohamed Salah.
