If Newcastle hang on to this point, they thoroughly deserve it to be fair. Brilliant defensive performance.

    Max in London

I'll be happy with a point here, but only if this is the standard for the rest of the season. Its one of the first games I've enjoyed watching

    Mike

  4. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 90+1 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Newcastle are set with their back five as Liverpool build from the halfway line.

Once more, there's no clear path to goal.

On comes Xherdan Shaqiri. Can he be the hero? Mo Salah makes way.

FOUR minutes of injury-time to come.

    This should be fun.

  6. CLOSE!published at 89 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Chaos in the Newcastle penalty area!

Karl Darlow produces another excellent save to keep out Roberto Firmino's header, and then beats Mo Salah to the follow-up to keep Liverpool out.

Darlow has been superb. Newcastle are almost there.

    Simon Grayson
Ex-Sunderland manager on BBC Radio 5 live

You'd think we're going to get a goal from somewhere but Newcastle don't deserve to lose and neither do Liverpool. It's been an entertaining 0-0 so far, that's for sure.

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Time is running out for Liverpool.

Their advantage at the top will be three points if they can't find a late winner - and second-placed Manchester United will have a game in hand.

Can they find a way past this stubborn Newcastle defence?

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 85 mins

Isaac Hayden receives a yellow card for a foul on Thiago, before Steve Bruce makes another change.

Jamal Lewis is on for the final five minutes, in place of Matt Ritchie.

    Offside!

This is a brilliant end to the game, both sides fancy a late winner here.

It's Liverpool's turn to attack again, and just as Newcastle begin to look open the flag goes up for offside against Roberto Firmino.

Chadrac Morris: This game got a last minute winner written all over it

Jack Tanner: this would be a very good point for Newcastle. Hopefully their fans will be happy.

Andrew: Stop moaning about lack of creativity, these players must be physically and mentally exhausted after non stop game after game after game.....

How on earth has that not gone in?!

Fabian Schar has produced a remarkable goal line clearance there!

Karl Darlow keeps out a shot but the ball bobbles back into the path of Mane. It looks like Mane is going to smash it home but Schar recovers brilliantly to boot the ball away with a sliding clearance.

    Great defending.

  13. CLOSE!published at 79 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Nathaniel Phillips concedes a free-kick and a yellow card, and hands Newcastle an opportunity to send a cross into the Liverpool penalty area.

They do so, and Alisson produces a great save to his left to keep out Ciaran Clark's header!

Andrew Robertson sends the set-piece into the box but Newcastle stand firm and it's headed to safety.

Thiago takes a shot from distance as Liverpool maintain their pressure, but it's blocked and the clock continues to tick down.

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold tries to play a short free-kick but Newcastle are on to it immediately and a good opportunity to whip a cross into the box passes.

The Reds have another free-kick over on the left side of the box now though...

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 73 mins

A welcome sight for Liverpool fans!

Thiago makes his return to action as he replaces James Milner for the closing stages.

Really nice play by Matthew Longstaff.

The 20-year-old takes his time on the ball, relieving the pressure and drawing in several Liverpool players before finding a team-mate.

The Newcastle players will need cool heads for these closing stages.

Another headed opportunity for Roberto Firmino! He's had a few of those today.

This one from Andy Robertson's cross fails to test Karl Darlow, as it flies just wide of the target.

London Money: I’m old enough to remember when these games always ended up 5-4 !

Colin Bundred: Once again a complete lack of ideas from Liverpool! Please bring on some imagination!

Reindeer Hotdog: What's the point in all this possession if you're not going to score? Liverpool need to stop letting negative teams get in their way. They managed it last season but lately it seems to be the same old story from a few years back. Not enough creativity in this team!

  20. Postpublished at 68 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

    A change for both sides.

Miguel Almiron replaces Jacob Murphy for Newcastle.

For Liverpool, Georginio Wijnaldum is on for Curtis Jones.
