Into first half injury-time we go, and there'll be just the one minute of it...

  4. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool are knocking the ball around much better now than they managed to at the start, but Newcastle have steadied themselves after a rocky 10 minutes or so.

Now, can they get themselves to half-time level?

  5. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool are determined to play out from the back and it's giving Newcastle plenty of encouragement to chase down.

James Milner attempts to beat the press with a long ball upfield, but it's pounced on by the determined Magpies midfield.

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Newcastle are sticking at this and pin Liverpool back with a throw-in high up the pitch.

Jacob Murphy does well to turn and get a shot away, but Alisson is equal to it.

  7. 'Newcastle are attacking and sprinting back really well'published at 20:38 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2020

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

    Simon Grayson
Ex-Sunderland manager on BBC Radio 5 live

You wouldn't think Liverpool are up at the top of the division and Newcastle down at the bottom. Yes Liverpool have the quality of the front three but they haven't quite hit the game yet. We've seen a couple of times where Newcastle have attacked and then sprinted back really well, they come back with six or seven players.

  8. Postpublished at 36 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool have really upped their intensity in the last few minutes and for the first time tonight Newcastle are beginning to look stretched.

Roberto Firmino looks to be in again but takes too long as he attempts to pick out the perfect pass. Even so, the visitors keep on coming...

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 34 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

You would heavily back Mohamed Salah to finish this off as he's left in acres of space by a quick ball over the top, but Karl Darlow is able to get a hand to Salah's shot and send it agonisingly wide of the post.

Alarm bells for the Newcastle defence there, but a really good save keeps the score level.

Richard Browne: As bad a Liverpool performance as I’ve seen in a while. They can’t pass!

Bresla Stephenson: if Liverpool don't win this, klopp should be questioned about his use of so many kids in defence

John Dunthorne: Liverpool looking a little off the pace, considering they had extra day over most

    Good defending!

  12. Postpublished at 30 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Corner to Liverpool now as the ball deflects out off Federico Fernandez.

But Karl Darlow is quick off his line to snatch the ball as it swings towards Roberto Firmino's head.

So far, so good after half an hour for Newcastle.

  13. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool are beginning to force Newcastle back now.

They're having to be patient as the hosts move into a solid 4-5-1 formation and Jurgen Klopp's side can find no way through at the moment.

Every time Newcastle win the ball back, Callum Wilson is already sprinting forward.

Joe Wedgwood: I'm never sure why Newcastle fans consider themselves to be such a big club? They've never won anything. Is it just based on population size?

Rob Gibson: Newcastle have had 5-7 people in attacking areas multiple times so far, and have honestly looked Liverpool’s equal. I can’t believe I’ve just said that.

  15. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Sadio Mane collects a long ball into the Newcastle half and all of a sudden Liverpool have loads of options in attack.

  16. 'Liverpool missing that final pass at the moment'published at 20:24 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2020

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

    Simon Grayson
Ex-Sunderland manager on BBC Radio 5 live

Newcastle have done well so far, quite positive and defended well when they've needed to. Callum Wilson has made a big difference, holding it up and linking the play between the defence and the midfield.

What's missing from Liverpool at the moment is that final pass to create a clear cut chance but all the chances so far have come from Newcastle.

  17. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Four shots for Newcastle, two for Liverpool so far.

The hosts' positive start is showing no signs of slowing down either as they build more pressure in the Liverpool half. But crucially, no breakthrough so far. You feel they really need to make this count.

  18. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Well, there's clearly nothing wrong with Andy Robertson.

He breaks down the left as Liverpool launch another speedy attack, but the left-back's pass doesn't reach its intended target.

This is flowing really nicely from end to end at the moment.

  19. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Another threatening attack by Newcastle sees DeAndre Yedlin storm forward, but he pulls his shot wide of the far post.

Andy Robertson has to receive some treatment after he was caught on the back of the leg during all of that - but he's safely back on the field now.

  20. Postpublished at 16 mins

James Milner registers Liverpool's first shot on target after 16 minutes with an attempt from outside the box that rolls into Karl Darlow's arms.

Nothing happening for the Reds so far...
