  1. CLOSE!published at 13 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

    Newcastle are in again!

Callum Wilson is once again the player causing Liverpool trouble as he beats Nathaniel Phillips, but the striker sees his shot blocked by Fabinho.

Really promising stuff from Steve Bruce's side.

  2. YELLOW CARDpublished at 12 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Ciaran Clark is the first name in the referee's book as he drags back James Milner to prevent another Liverpool counter.

  3. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

James Milner recovers well to avoid an awkward mix-up at the back with Newcastle pressing high and with energy.

They're lulled into a false sense of security however, and Liverpool are able to break.

Fortunately for the hosts, Roberto Firmino's attempt is easily gathered by Karl Darlow.

  4. 'Newcastle not allowing Liverpool to dominate so far'published at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2020

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

    Simon Grayson
Ex-Sunderland manager on BBC Radio 5 live

Newcastle have started the game positively - Liverpool have just broke away and Matt Ritchie did well at the far post to put it out for a corner. Steve Bruce will be pleased with this start from his team, not allowing Liverpool to dominate.

  5. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

A better spell for Liverpool sees consecutive corners whipped in from the right by Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Newcastle are well organised and deal with both crosses comfortably enough.

Steve Bruce's side look up for this challenge.

  6. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

That's not a bad opportunity either!

Callum Wilson's diving header travels just wide from Jacob Murphy's cross.

Murphy may just have been offside there, but it would have been close...

  7. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

It certainly hasn't been every man behind the ball for Newcastle.

Liverpool are yet to get going, and Sadio Mane cleans up at the back as the Magpies launch a free-kick towards the box from near the halfway line

  8. 'Newcastle need to be positive'published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2020

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

    Simon Grayson
Ex-Sunderland manager on BBC Radio 5 live

If Newcastle are going to get something out of this game they need to be positive and on the front foot but they also can't give Liverpool's front three any opportunities.

  9. CLOSE!published at 3 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

I think that's a cross from Callum Wilson, but his ball from the right drifts towards Alisson's goal and the Liverpool keeper has to tip it over for a corner!

Nothings comes of the set piece, but it's been a very good start by Newcastle.

  10. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Dwight Gayle scored in the first minute when these sides met in July, before Liverpool fought back to win 3-1.

No such drama at the start of this one in rather different conditions - there's a little bit of snow in the air at St James' Park.

It's Nathaniel Phillips' third Premier League start of the season for Liverpool.

The 23-year-old featured in a 2-1 win against West Ham in October and the 1-1 draw with Brighton last month.

Meanwhile, it's Andy Robertson's 150th appearance for the Reds.

    Here come the teams!

Seth Gogo Egoeh: Klopp should stop moaning about smaller teams being defensive against his expensively assembled team. Is he trying to tell us that if he was in charge of West Brom, he would dominate? We remember his 39% possession against Real Madrid & Spurs in the #UCL, external finals.

Newcastle are winless in four in all competitions, but they have fared well when hosting the reigning Premier League champions in recent years.

Steve Bruce, take a leaf out of Big Sam's book and frustrate Liverpool and then take your chance when it comes.

Steve Bruce said some of the "mass hysteria" around his side was "unjust and unfair" following a week in which Newcastle were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Championship side Brentford and lost 2-0 to Manchester City on Saturday.

"All the fans are like we are, we have to accept where we are. It is as pretty straightforward as that," he said.

"My remit is to make sure we stay and remain a Premier League outfit. That is what I will try to achieve. That is where we have been for the last three or four years.

"Of course, for Newcastle, in a lot of people's eyes, that isn't going to be enough but that is where we are at the moment. We have to accept it and keep, as I have said many times, trying to move it forward."

  18. 'Liverpool won't make the same mistake'published at 19:43 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2020

    Newcastle v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Newcastle have not had a great week but that won't change their game plan against Liverpool, which will be to make it as difficult as possible for them - like West Brom did, really.

Liverpool got through the Baggies defence once early on and are usually relentless until the game is done and dusted, but they did not do enough in the second half to make the points safe.

I can't see that happening again at St James' Park.

    Lawro's prediction: 0-2

  19. 'It is an incredible challenge to constantly face 10 men'published at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2020

    Newcastle v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Safe to say Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wasn't too impressed with West Brom's "6-4-0 formation or whatever it was", as he put it, after Sunday's 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Klopp said "nobody would expect a team to play like West Brom in the first half," adding: "It is an incredible challenge when you constantly face 10 men.

"West Brom deserved the point because we didn't finish the game. It is our fault and that is why it is only one point instead of three."

He'll expect to face a similar challenge this evening.

  20. Newcastle strong against the championspublished at 19:36 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2020

    Newcastle v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

Newcastle are without a clean sheet in 11 Premier League home games, conceding 22 goals since their 3-0 win against Sheffield United in June.

The Magpies have won only three of their seven home league matches, drawing one and losing three.

But, they are unbeaten in their last four Premier League home fixtures against the reigning champions...
