Fans or no fans, a derby goal is still something to spark jubilant celebrations - and that was the case for Swansea's substitutes and coaches on the touchline.

It was a messy goal for Cardiff to concede, and an example of how Swansea's wing-backs are stretching the game against their opponents' narrow 4-4-2.

    Jamal Lowe

What a start for the Swans!

The visitors have pushed and probed and lead from their first shot on goal.

Jake Bidwell's cross was headed back across goal by Connor Roberts and Jamal Lowe prodded home from close range.

Lowe's contact was soft and Cardiff goalkeeper Alex Smithies is sure to feel he could have done better.

That's a goal you expect Cardiff to score, not concede.

Like all good derbies, matches between Cardiff and Swansea are usually spiteful affairs, simmering with tension and hostility.

But all those elements are missing today in the build-up to this encounter at an empty Cardiff City Stadium.

Both managers have spoken about the need for their players to "generate their own atmosphere" - though no amount of needle on the pitch will replicate the theatre of hate of a south Wales derby played in front of a capacity crowd.

These are the days when the absence of fans is felt most powerfully.

Cardiff City v Swansea City (12:30 GMT)

Midfielder Joe Ralls has praised the impact of forward Mark Harris in turning Cardiff City's season around with four wins from their last four.

The Welsh striker was born in Swansea and has played for Wrexham and Newport County and now he faces his hometown club in today's south Wales derby at Cardiff City Stadium.

Andre Ayew says he is not contemplating his future beyond this season because his sole focus is helping Swansea City return to the Premier League.

The 30-year-old's lucrative Swansea contract is set to expire at the end of 2020-21.

The influential forward says speculation about his future will not affect him.

  15. Allen close to a returnpublished at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2020

Cardiff City v Swansea City (12:30 GMT)

This is news for Stoke City fans primarily, but I have a feeling the majority of Cardiff and Swansea fans are going to care about this one.

In case you missed it, Wales midfielder Joe Allen is set to return to action as he closes in on a competitive return for Stoke City following nine months out.

Allen, 30, has not played since March after surgery on a ruptured Achilles.

Stoke manager Michael O'Neill confirmed Allen has now returned to training and is hoping for him to take the next step to recovery.

When Cardiff City host Swansea City in today's south Wales derby, it will be a high-stakes and high-profile encounter between two clubs vying for a return to the Premier League.

With only one place in the Championship play-offs separating them last year, the old rivals will go into the 110th instalment of this fixture just four points apart.

Yet 18 years ago it was a very different story.

  19. When will fans return in Wales?published at 12:15 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2020

Cardiff City v Swansea City (12:30 GMT)

There will be no fans for this South Wales derby.

This week Wales' largest sporting organisations joined together to urge the Welsh Government to allow fans to return.

The return of fans does not seem likely in Wales anytime soon with the First Minister Mark Drakeford saying the situation is "very serious" across the whole of the country.

Next week the Welsh Government will publish a "Covid control plan" laying out four alert levels of restrictions that could be imposed after Christmas.

  20. Swans' Ayew will miss facing derby 'boos and insults'published at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2020

Cardiff City v Swansea City (12:30 GMT)

Is Andre Ayew secretly related to former Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock?

He certainly shares a philosophy with a manager who once said he hoped to be remembered after he dies with "a minute's booing."

Swansea City striker Ayew says he wishes fans would be at Saturday's south Wales derby at Cardiff City as the "boos and insults coming at you" normally drive him on.
