Reading go in front, and it's a training ground corner move that yields it.

Big goal for the Royals who are among the promotion challengers.

Forest Green Rovers v Exeter CityImage source, Rex Features

Thankfully we've got a full set of fixtures in League Two.

Four games have already been completed in the bottom tier, and this is how it went:

    • Cambridge United 2-1 Leyton Orient
    • Exeter City 1-1 Forest Green Rovers
    • Scunthorpe Town 2-3 Mansfield Town
    • Southend 2-0 Colchester United

It means Southend will jump off the bottom spot, while Forest Green miss out on a chance to go top.

A win away to Crawley could extend Newport County's lead at the summit to three points.

Cheltenham could also go into the automatic promotion places provided they beat now bottom-side Stevenage and Carlisle drop points at home to Bolton.

With Southend's win, Barrow will look to reinstate their three-point gap between them and the drop with a win at Port Vale.

    League Two's 15:00 GMT games:

    • Carlisle United v Bolton Wanderers
    • Cheltenham Town v Stevenage
    • Crawley Town v Newport County
    • Morecambe v Grimsby Town
    • Oldham Athletic v Harrogate Town
    • Port Vale v Barrow
    • Salford City v Walsall
    • Tranmere Rovers v Bradford City

    Lincoln CityImage source, Rex Features

A point at home to Burton Albion would be enough to take Lincoln City top of the table.

Because of coronavirus-related postponements, the Imps are the only side in the top six playing today. A total of six games are off.

Wigan Athletic could do with some points, they're four off safety but face in-form Shrewsbury who have won their last three.

Bristol Rovers, 19th, travel to MK Dons, 18th, in what looks to be a feisty festive fixture with both sides just a point above the drop.

Charlton and Crewe could both go into the play-off spots with a win. They host Plymouth and Fleetwood respectively. All the action starts at 15:00 GMT.

    • Charlton Athletic v Plymouth Argyle
    • Crewe Alexandra v Fleetwood Town
    • Lincoln City v Burton Albion
    • MK Dons v Bristol Rovers
    • Oxford United v AFC Wimbledon

Tony Pulis recorded his first win in charge of Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, and a repeat result at Blackburn would put the Owls a point from safety.

Bottom club Wycombe, who are 10 without victory, could be in the same position if they win at Bristol City, who have lost four of their past five without scoring.

Meanwhile, Stoke City and Reading are both aiming to climb into the play-off places ahead of the late kick-off.

The Potters go to Coventry while the Royals host Luton.

And there's the definition of a mid-table battle at Oakwell, where one goal scored separates 13th-placed Barnsley and 12th-placed Huddersfield in the table.

  13. East Midlands misery for Forestpublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2020

    Nott'm Forest v Birmingham (15:00 GMT)

Leicester's high-flying Premier League exploits are like a particularly soggy sprout to swallow for fans of Nottingham Forest, who like their near-neighbours Derby County, are floundering at the wrong end of the Championship.

The Reds have won just one of their past nine games, are just a point clear of the bottom three, and welcome back a former manager (there are many of those to be fair) in Aitor Karanka with the visit of Birmingham this afternoon.

Karanka's Blues were thrashed 4-1 by Middlesbrough in their last game, so no doubt it was a chastening Christmas for the squad. They are six points above the drop zone but still have a nervous eye on the mix-up below.

History favours the home side in these meetings, with the hosts taking the spoils on the past nine occasions.

    Derby v Preston (15:00 GMT)

    Wayne RooneyImage source, Rex Features

Wayne Rooney and his coaching chums Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker pretty much saved Christmas for Derby fans, having instilled some belief and form after a miserable start.

They come into today's game still embedded in the bottom three but on a run of six games unbeaten - including an impressive 2-0 win over promotion hopefuls Swansea at Pride Park last time out.

Preston have been as mixed as a tin of Christmas chocs, as evidenced by eight wins and 10 defeats. This is not a team for your pools coupon.

Alex Neil's side have been better on their travels over all, winning five of those games away from Deepdale. That said, they've lost their last two on the road at Barnsley and Luton.

Another club looking to close the gap top the top two is Brentford.

Last season's beaten play-off finalists have found their form after a slow start, and are now 14 games unbeaten in all competitions.

Thomas Frank's men have a first-ever League Cup semi-final to look forward to in 2021, and victory today will see the Bees move level on points with second-placed Bournemouth.

Cardiff City are striving to get back into the play-off picture after two defeats in their past three have left the Welsh club four points off the top six.

Neil Harris' Bluebirds have won five of their past seven, and emerged victorious on three of their last four outings at home.

  16. Swans eye second spotpublished at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2020

    QPR v Swansea (15:00 GMT)

    Steve CooperImage source, Getty Images

With second-placed Bournemouth not in action, Swansea City have a chance to move into the automatic promotion places.

Steve Cooper's men have won two of their past three and travel to a QPR side who are out of form and sliding down the table.

Rangers are seven without a win, and one victory in their past 10 has left the west London side four points above the relegation zone in 19th place.

And, with just two goals in their last five outings, Mark Warburton will be hoping his side got some new shooting boots among their Christmas presents yesterday.

Boxing Day omens are hard to come by for both clubs - Swansea have lost their past four on this date while QPR have one win in seven on the 26th December.
