  1. 'Bruce is having a tough time'published at 20:16 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    FT: Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

You're always under pressure when you don't win games and Steve Bruce is having a tough time.

I still think I'll stick with what I said at the beginning of the game and that's Newcastle have got to get forward more, got to get the ball quicker in the final third.

At this minute, however, I don't think Steve Bruce has the players to do that.

    Man Utd 1-0 Watford

Axel Tuanzebe has to clear it off the line for United but there's an offside in the build-up from Watford when it's headed on from a free-kick.

United go up the other end but Daniel James' curling effort is well wide.

  3. Postpublished at 20:15 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

Mic: I get Bruno starting over van der Beek. But what an insult to have Lingard playing Donny’s preferred position right now. Wasting his talent making him sit so deep.

Tom: Can't understand why United still hang on to Lingard. Or is it that there are no takers?

  5. Postpublished at 20:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Man Utd 1-0 Watford

Juan Mata manages to bring the ball down in the Watford area but the defenders are doing their jobs - putting in blocks to deny Mata and then Mason Greenwood.

  8. Postpublished at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Man Utd 1-0 Watford

Watford are pegged back into their own half at the moment. United try to build through the middle but Scott McTominay gives it away sloppily.

Ismaila Sarr can't hold it up on the right for Watford though.

  9. 'It shows how together we are'published at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    FT: Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle

    Arsenal

Arsenal goalscorer and man of the match Emile Smith Rowe: "I was really happy, a bit of a relief for me with the incident before (the overturned red card) - it definitely wasn't intentional - happy to get the goal and get through to the next round.

"We knew how tough it was going to be, they're a tough opponent. It was about breaking them down. From a young kid I have always wanted to play for this club, I am really happy.

"It shows how together we are, we have been working off the pitch to get closer as a group and it shows."

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I thought the first half for Newcastle was really poor, they didn't have any intent getting forward. Second half was a little bit better, the guys defended really well. Andy Carroll did really well too considering his lack of game time. When you have the chances Newcastle had, you have to put it in the back of the net. It just wasn't meant to be.

  12. Postpublished at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

All United. Jesse Lingard slips it through to Mason Greenwood on the left side of the box but he skews the shot.

They say the best captain's are the players it makes a difference to.

Scott McTominay loved that. I sense there is a real element of pride about him wearing the armband today.

He is Manchester United through and through.

Daniel: Made it hard for ourselves but over the line in the end. ESR must play from the start next game

Ian: Aubameyang definitely needed that tap in..hopefully that's the start of a scoring run.. Smith Rowe been very good since he came on, a Ramsey esq finish.

Kris: ‘All Newcastle’s hard work in vain’ I think that might be what I’ve heard the most as a supporter. A distinct lack of attacking threat

  15. goal

GOAL - Man Utd 1-0 Watfordpublished at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Scott McTominay (4 mins)

    Captain.

Scott McTominay meets the corner, heads it down into the ground and it pops up and in off the inside of the right post.

    He enjoyed that.

  16. CLOSE!published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2021

    Man Utd 0-0 Watford

Daniel James looks lively. He fires one at goal but it's tipped over the bar by Daniel Bachmann. It was straight at him but had plenty of pace.

Former Arsenal striker on BBC One

In the end, Mikel Arteta had to being on his best guys because the guys he brought in, just didn't do it in the first half. That was the opportunity for Newcastle to take advantage but they just didn't have the quality.

A fair result. Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination.

It was won by a really good goal by Smith Rowe.
