    Southampton v Arsenal (20:15 GMT)

BBC Sport's Simon Stone reports that Arsenal hope to complete the loan signing of attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid later today.

The 22-year-old Norwegian has struggled to make an impact in Real manager Zinedine Zidane's squad this season.

Real Sociedad, where Odegaard spent last season on loan, and Eredivisie leaders Ajax were also keen on signing him.

However, Arsenal have reached an agreement and he could feature on Saturday against Manchester United.

Rafael Benitez will not become Celtic's next manager or return to Newcastle United under the club's current ownership, says Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

Benitez has left his role as boss of Chinese side Dalian Professional.

Balague says reigning Scottish champions Celtic were interested in the Spaniard replacing Neil Lennon, but Benitez is going to "rest for a bit".

However, he added that there is "a bit of unfinished business" at Newcastle.

Benitez managed the Magpies from 2016 to 2019, later saying "those at the top of the club did not share the same vision".

Premier League club Newcastle, owned by Mike Ashley, were the subject of a takeover bid last year, but a Saudi Arabian-backed consortium pulled out of a £300m deal in June.

"Newcastle is not an option for Rafa Benitez under this owner," said Balague. "Change the owner and then maybe.

"Rafa has a huge respect for the fans, the club, the town. And I feel there is a bit of an unfinished business there."

    Newcastle v Leeds (18:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Leeds had the weekend off after going out of the FA Cup and, the way they play, that rest will make them even more dangerous.

They will be running even more than usual, and they have key midfielder Kalvin Phillips back after he miss the defeat by Brighton through suspension.

Newcastle are in awful form - without a win in 10 games in all competitions, with seven defeats and only four goals in that period.

If sacking season has started now, with Frank Lampard leaving Chelsea, then Steve Bruce is in trouble as Newcastle manager if this run continues.

    Prediction: 0-2

    • Newcastle are winless in eight league matches, drawing twice and losing six.
    • They have lost four successive Premier League matches, they last lost five consecutively in May 2015.
    • Newcastle could fail to score in five straight matches for the first time since March 1981.
    • They have won just three of their past 13 matches at St James' Park, drawing four, losing six and keeping one clean sheet.
    • The Magpies could lose home and away games against a promoted side for just the third time in the Premier League.
    • Newcastle have only attempted 82 shots after nine Premier League home games, their lowest tally since Opta records began in 2003.
    • Steve Bruce has never lost a home league match against Leeds as a manager, winning five and drawing twice.

Another negative text from me I'm afraid. Honestly, everyone knows that Leeds have more energy than most if not all teams and so who do we pick to compete with them in midfield? Shelvey and Hendrick????? The pair of them always look like they are running in custard!!!!

  8. Should City sign Costa?published at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2021

West Brom v Man City (20:15 GMT)

    Micah Richards
    Former Man City defender

Manchester City are already on a ridiculously good run of form but if they signed Diego Costa now, he would win them the Premier League - I am sure of it.

Costa is 32 and I am not suggesting he is a long-term solution for City up front, but the former Chelsea striker is a free agent after ending his Atletico Madrid contract in December, and can sign for anyone for nothing.

Why not get him in until the end of the season? He would do more than just ruffle a few feathers and be a pain in the backside for opposition defences - he is a proven finisher who would offer Pep Guardiola's side a proper plan B.

Yes, you would have to cover Costa's wages, but the massive difference he could make to City's season would make that worthwhile.

West Brom v Man City (20:15 GMT)

Yep, it's hard to believe eight teams have topped the Premier League at the end of a game week this season, and Manchester City aren't one of them...

Pep Guardiola's side would go top for the first time this campaign if they can extend their winning run in the competition to seven games tonight.

They conceded their first goal in eight hours and 29 minutes in all competitions against Cheltenham in the FA Cup on Saturday, and have kept 10 clean sheets in 18 league games this season - only in 1976-77 have they reached double figures in fewer matches.

But City's tally of 10 away league goals is the fewest among top-half sides, they could be looking to Phil Foden to improve on that, whose nine goals in 25 appearances this season is already one more than he scored in 38 games last season.

West Brom v Man City (20:15 GMT)

Is Pep right? Is Big Sam a football genius?

Well, Allardyce has never taken over a club and failed to improve on their league position before leaving.

Twice previously has has taken a side from 19th in the Premier League to safety, first with Blackburn in the 2008-09 season and again with Sunderland in 2015-16, before leaving to take the England job.

After just one game and an ill-fated 67-day stint as national team boss, he returned to club management to guide Crystal Palace away from the relegation spots and up to 14th in the table in 2016-17.

    "Sam Allardyce is a genius."

Not my words, but those of coaching behemoth Pep Guardiola.

Allardyce is aiming to maintain his record of never being relegated as he attempts to save the second-from-bottom West Brom from the drop.

He has saved Sunderland and Blackburn from similar positions in the past.

Allardyce knows how to get results "when everyone believes it is over", says Guardiola.

The Baggies have managed only one win in seven games since Allardyce took over from Slaven Bilic on 16 December, a day after West Brom drew away to Guardiola's City, and are now five points from safety rather than two.

But although their sole victory against Wolves this month was followed by a defeat by West Ham, Guardiola says the Black Country derby triumph and holding champions Liverpool to a draw at Anfield in December show Allardyce's good work at The Hawthorns.

"It is not easy to take over a team during the season, but against Wolves, Liverpool, other clubs he got good results," the Spaniard said.

    "Sam Allardyce is a genius."

  13. Think you know the offside rule?published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2021

West Brom v Man City (20:15 GMT)

This will come as little consolation to Villa fans, but football's authorities have said Bernardo Silva's opener for Manchester City in their 2-0 win last week should not have stood.

At the time, by the letter of the law, the goal was legitimate, because Tyrone Mings played the ball deliberately and so the offside player - Rodri - is deemed not to have gained an advantage.

But referees group the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, rulemakers the International Football Association Board, and European governing body Uefa have since offered clarification on how such an incident should be interpreted in the future.

"Where a player in an offside position immediately impacts on an opponent who has deliberately played the ball, the match officials should prioritise challenging an opponent for the ball, and thus the offside offence of 'interfering with an opponent by impacting on the opponent's ability to play the ball' should be penalised."

The statement from the Premier League added: "Accordingly, if a similar situation to the one involving Rodri's impact on Mings occurred in a future match, then the impact would be penalised for offside."

  16. Two changes for Newcastlepublished at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2021

    Newcastle v Leeds (18:00 GMT)

Newcastle make two changes from Saturday's loss at Aston Villa.

Andy Carroll drops to the bench, with Ryan Fraser coming in to the starting XI. Javier Manquillo also drops out and Jacob Murphy starts.

Allan Saint-Maximin is still building up his fitness and is on the bench.

Newcastle: Darlow, Murphy, Hayden, Lascelles, Schar, Lewis, Almiron, Shelvey, Hendrick, Fraser, Wilson.

Subs: Dubravka, Matthew Longstaff, Carroll, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Ritchie, Gayle, Krafth, Manquillo.

Leeds make three changes from their last game - the 1-0 home loss to Brighton 10 days ago.

Illan Meslier is fit again an replaces Kiko Casilla in goal.

Kalvin Phillips is back from suspension and replaces Pascal Struijk in midfield.

Another midfielder, Mateusz Klich, is somewhat surprisingly dropped to the bench, with centre Diego Llorente coming in to the side. This is likely to mean Stuart Dallas pushing up into midfield. t is only the second time Klich has not featured in a starting XI in the league under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds - the other being a dead rubber at Derby at the end of last season.

Leeds: Meslier, Ayling, Cooper, Llorente, Alioski, Phillips, Raphinha, Dallas, Rodrigo, Harrison, Bamford.

Subs: Poveda-Ocampo, Roberts, Casilla, Helder Costa, Hernandez, Struijk, Davis, Klich, Shackleton.

The Hammers make seven changes from the team which swept away League One side Doncaster in the FA Cup.

Declan Rice, Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen are among the big names returning.
