  3. 'The gap can be closed'published at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2021

Ronald Koeman’s men are now fifth in the table, 10 points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, who have played one game fewer.

After Barcelona's match at Athletic Bilbao today, they are then at Granada three days later and Elche on January 24.

After the 1-0 win over Huesca at the weekend, Koeman said: “This month is very important for our aspirations because we have lots of games away from home and, if we win them, I think we can fight.

“We’ve seen this weekend that it’s not easy to win away from home. If a team (above us) goes on a bad run, the gap can be closed, but it depends on us winning.”

Earlier, Alexis Sanchez had a penalty saved as Inter Milan's eight-match winning run came to an end with a 2-1 loss at Sampdoria.

The defeat also meant they missed the chance to leapfrog Milan at the top of the Serie A table.

Antonio Candreva, on loan from Inter, and Keita Balde scored for Sampdoria.

Stefan de Vrij reduced the deficit with a header after Sanchez saw his first-half spot-kick kept out by Emil Audero.

Ashley Young struck the crossbar with his follow-up on what was a frustrating day for Antonio Conte's men, who had 24 efforts on goal.

This has traditionally been one of the key fixtures in the Italian football calendar, but there is a delicious twist to Wednesday's contest.

Champions Juventus have, in recent seasons, gone into the match with the upper hand over Milan, but they are currently 10 points shy of their bitter rivals who sit top of the table after a sensational campaign so far.

Unbeaten Milan have gone from strength to strength under the guidance of coach Stefano Pioli, appointed back in October.

However, they will be without their injured talisman and leading scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the clash. They still have plenty of firepower with Theo Hernandez, Rafael Leao and Franck Kessie all having scored four or more goals in the league this season.

Juve have the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo in their attack for this eagerly-awaited clash.

Milan XI: Donnaruma; Dalot, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Calabria, Kessie; Castillejo, Calhanoglu, Hauge; Leao.

Juventus XI: Szczesny; Danilo, Bonnuci, de Ligt, Frabotta; Chiesa, Rabiot, Bentancur, Ramsey; Dybala, Ronaldo.
