    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

Birmingham boss Carla Ward will no doubt be well chuffed with the start her side have made as we pass the halfway point of the first period.

They have not threatened in attack, but they have not been troubled defensively either.

Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby have barely had a sniff.

  2. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

Chelsea have a free-kick 35 or so yards out. They win a corner which leads to another wayward attempt from distance from a Scandinavian defender.

This time Magdalena Eriksson is off target.

Birmingham goalkeeper Hannah Hampton is yet to be tested.

  3. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

That's lovely play from Erin Cuthbert who works some space after turning neatly on the left. The Chelsea midfielder cuts inside, dummies a couple of defenders but smashes the ball way over.

There are only a handful of games left this season so thoughts will be turning to the prizes to be handed out.

Not just the WSL title, but individual awards - such as Player of the Season.

  5. Postpublished at 12 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

Jonna Andersson tries her luck from distance for the hosts but the shot flies well over the bar.

That's the first effort on goal. It's been quiet so far. Birmingham will be pleased.

  6. 'Very tight at the bottom'published at 12:45 British Summer Time 4 April 2021

    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

    Jayne Ludlow
Former Reading and Wales manager on BBC Sport

Birmingham's run-in is important and this is probably not one of the games they were looking for three points from - there are others that they will be looking to do that in.

But it would be lovely for them if they could get some points today and stay out of the relegation area because it is very tight at the bottom.

  7. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

Melanie Leupolz wins possession for Chelsea deep in her own half and plays a fine reverse pass to Pernille Harder, but the Dane cannot make the most of a good position on the left.

The visitors have been quick into the tackle and are pressing all over the pitch.

  8. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

Niamh Charles once again looks to get away down the right but cannot fashion a cross.

Birmingham have defended impressively so far. The structure and discipline has been excellent.

    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

Niamh Charles makes a good early surge from right-back and wins a throw-in as Chelsea show some good early urgency.

Birmingham (in their red strip) clear comfortably in an uneventful start.

  11. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

    Chelsea 0-0 Birmingham

    Away we go at Kingsmeadow.

A home win would take Chelsea five points clear of Manchester City with three games to play.

City play later of course so the gap could be back to two by the end of the day.

Chelsea and Man City meet in their next WSL fixture - on April 25.

Carla Ward's Birmingham desperately need points to allay fears of relegation.

    It's all to play for.

  12. Bottom club Villa in need of a winpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 4 April 2021

Everton v Aston Villa (13:00 BST)

After strugglers West Ham thrashed Reading 5-0 yesterday, Aston Villa now find themselves in unfamiliar territory at the bottom of the WSL table.

Today's match away to Everton is crucial for all the wrong reasons.

Villa have sleepwalked into the relegation zone having lost their last four in the league.

A win today though and they're back up to 10th, level with neighbours Birmingham.

But Everton are a formidable force on their day. Having had three wins from their past five, another victory this afternoon will all but seal their 'best of the rest' title.

  13. Following up from Wolfsburgpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 4 April 2021

    Chelsea v Birmingham (12:30 BST)

Chelsea should be brimming with confidence as they take on Birmingham in the sunshine.

Not only are they two points clear at the top having won 15 of their 18 league games so far, but they are through to the semi-finals of the Champions following the awesome midweek win over Wolfsburg.

Emma Hayes described the 3-0 second-leg success, which brought an 5-1 aggregate victory, as her "favourite" win in charge.

The London Blues are huge favourites to beat the west Midlands Blues.

I'm not sure what happened the last time a high-flying Chelsea side were massive favourites to beat a team from around that neck of the woods who had only won three league games all season?

Let's take a look at the teams from the first game of the day...

Chelsea once again go with the deadly forward combination of Fran Kirby (pictured), Sam Kerr and Pernille Harder.

Scotland's Erin Cuthbert retains her place in midfield after impressing in the Champions League and Drew Spence also starts, while striker Beth England is back on the bench.

Birmingham make three changes from their last outing, with defender Gemma Lawley and midfielders Mollie Green and Emma Kelly all starting. Emily Murphy and Heidi Logan take their place on the bench after injury, while Veatriki Sarri is in the squad for the first time.

Chelsea: Berger, Eriksson, Charles, Bright, Andersson, Spence, Leupolz, Cuthbert, Harder, Kirby, Kerr.

Subs: Telford, Musovic, Blundelll, Ingle, Carter, Reiten, Fleming, England.

Sub: Whitehouse, Murphy, Whipp, Logan, Holloway, Sarri, Napier.

Plenty to play for at the top and bottom of the Women's Super League today, then, as the season approaches its business end with just four games for the majority of sides.

In the title race, Chelsea will be hoping to throw down the gauntlet to Manchester City - who visit Tottenham at 14:00 BST - by beating Birmingham in the lunchtime kick-off, live on the BBC.

Manchester United and Arsenal are dueling it out for the third Champions League qualification spot - they visit mid-table Brighton and relegation-battling Bristol City respectively.

At the bottom, West Ham's thumping 5-0 win at Reading on Saturday pushed Aston Villa to the foot of the table. They visit fifth-placed Everton desperate for a win in what looks a four-team fight to avoid the drop.
