    Good evening to you.

You might be reading this with the washing machine stomach of someone waiting for a first date to arrive, or before a job interview.

    Yep, we've all been there.

This is the one game Derby and Forest fans look for in the calendar.

Spoils were shared back in October at the City Ground... will the Rams be smiling like Dean Saunders and the Popsiders were 31 years ago - will we get a new holder of the Brian Clough Trophy tonight?

  5. Free of the atmosphere, and venompublished at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2021

Normally, workplace banter will have stoked the fires leading up to this one.

Rams fans would have congregated in locals, supping to quell the butterflies, predicting wild scorelines and reminiscing of past triumphs over their old enemy, before making their way to their usual spot in the stands.

The Forest fans' old walk past Rolls Royce - sometimes accompanied by jeers from the factory crew - and through the rat-run streets surrounding the Baseball Ground is long gone, replaced by the trudge of the police escort between the car showrooms and theme pubs of Pride Park's industrial estate.

    But not tonight.

None of the venom which accompanies the deep feeling will be present, with fans not allowed. Nor will the cauldron-like atmosphere, fuelled by beers, bravado and tension.

In this sterile environment, all that will influence matters is what happens on the pitch.

What is it that makes two provincial cities linked by the A52 so fiercely opposed?

After all, they both owe so much to one footballing icon. Brian Clough. He turned both into champions, and Forest into European giants.

To boot, Forest already have a ready-made rival in Notts County, a loose punt's width away across the River Trent.

Yet, the feeling generated by the inter-city encounters has long surpassed that particular emnity.

  7. What makes a 'derby'?published at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2021

What is it that makes a proper 'derby'?

Some say it has to be a same-city thing, such as Manchester, Liverpool or Birmingham affairs.

Others feel true tribalism comes from the rivalry of neighbouring towns and cities; Newcastle-Sunderland, Blackburn-Burnley, Portsmouth-Southampton...

    Derby County v Nottingham Forest.
