Chelsea's passing is sharp and accurate, all the men in Blue are comfortable on the ball.

As Thomas Tuchel mentioned before kick-off, he likes to deploy two central midfielders but one of N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic is expected to push forward and help out the front three.

Chelsea causing problems for Southampton on their first foray forward, the move starts via Timo Werner's lovely spin on the halfway line.

Reece James eventually chips a ball to the onrushing Marcos Alonso down the left edge of the box, but the Spaniard's thumping volley skips just wide of the far post.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel jumping up and down in frustration, it was a lovely move.

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl tells BT Sport: "Stuart Armstrong has a slight injury so hopefully he is not out for too long, he has a muscle issue. It is the story of the last few weeks and how quickly things can change, there is no time to think about how much it hurts but only to think about what we can do better. We must bring the best players on the pitch and find the right shape for it.

"I am not sure where Timo Werner will play but we want to fight with the right commitment for everything that comes at our door.

"Mohammed Salisu showed in the FA Cup he is a competitive centre-back and hopefully plays the game we expect him to play.

"Thomas Tuchel always wants to be dominating and his teams are strong with the ball and counter pressing too. It has been a good start for him in the Premier League and hopefully we are a strong opponent."

  8. 'Pure pleasure' to work with Kantepublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2021

    Southampton v Chelsea (12:30 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel tells BT Sport: "We do our stuff together with the team, we show a lot of pictures from previous matches because they are good behaviours and we want to improve. It has been a team effort in the last matches so hopefully it will be the same today.

"We did not prioritise defensive or offensive work, football is in any minute a team sport and we are solid as a team and have a good energy on the pitch in all phases of the team. That is a good mentality and good team spirit."

On starting Edouard Mendy: "It was not a tough decision, the decision was taken soon after my arrival that there was no need to change the (number one) goalkeeper. Monday was the moment to let Kepa Arrizabalaga know we trust him and let his confidence grow. He had good performances in that game and FA Cup but it was clear that Mendy would return as number one."

"I have a feeling N'Golo Kante will help in any games, it is a pure pleasure to have the guy in the squad, what we see in training is fantastic. We have three strong midfielders in Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic and I am very happy, they are the core of our game and I want to have minimum two of them on the pitch.

"Tammy Abraham was lucky not to be injured then lucky not to feel pain, he could train yesterday so we could field the same team offensively as in the last game."

The players Thomas Tuchel already has at his disposal are brilliant. When you see the influence and impact Tuchel has had - sometimes it's just a change of voice or training schedules or tactics.

The smallest of tweaks can make the biggest of differences and I think we're seeing that. Tuchel has come in and been absolutely phenomenal in his first games.

I think we all know what went wrong at Southampton and it feels like that one result has rocked the boat and confidence yet again.

There has been a lot of chopping and changing and I do believe they are a team that at its best can compete with most in the league but take one or two out of it and it kind of melts away a bit.

It's not going well for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side at the moment.

Southampton have lost six consecutive league matches for the first time in their history.

Their biggest issue is not being able to keep a lead having dropped a league-high 16 points from winning positions this season.
