Wales win an early corner, but play it short to Ben Davies, curiously, and the moment is lost.

It seems the Forest man has at least started as Wales' attacking central pivot.

He's got six clean sheets, in his 13 games Wales have only scored eight goals which sums up the Wales at the moment, six of those games they haven't scored in. I always thought his problem has been he wants to play with a fluid front line with a false nine, but the only one who scores consistently is Kieffer Moore.

    Belarus v Wales (14:00 BST)

So to recap, Wales will be without no fewer than 13 players for this World Cup game.

Aaron Ramsey and Kieffer Moore were among seven players to pull out due to injury or Covid-19, while another three are absent due to visa issues.

Defenders Connor Roberts and Ben Cabango were already injured and midfielder Harry Wilson is suspended.

Joe Rodon, David Brooks, Neco Williams and George Thomas have also pulled out injured while Brandon Cooper, Tyler Roberts and Ethan Ampadu all miss out due to visa issues, while goalkeeper Adam Davies has Covid-19 and Moore was a close contact of his.

    What. A. Nightmare.

That is good news given that he may be leading the Wales line this afternoon.

The thing with Gareth is whether he's playing well or not he's always a focal point for the opposition and how to stop Wales. That creates space for others. He's going to be match sharp and fit and ready to go. This is an ideal opportunity to go and get another goal. He can still turn the game on its head and get a goal.

  16. Bale 'never planned' to retirepublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Belarus v Wales (14:00 BST)

Gareth Bale says he "never planned" to retire as he aims to put doubts about his future to one side and lead Wales to a first World Cup since 1958.

Bale was evasive when he was asked before Euro 2020 about speculation he would retire after the tournament.

The 32-year-old also walked away when he was asked about his Wales future following the round of 16 defeat by Denmark.

"For me it was better not to say anything and concentrate on the job in hand," said Bale.

"I never planned to finish. Like I said before, I just wanted to concentrate on the Euros and didn't want to explain myself. I didn't feel like I needed to. I still don't feel like I need to."

One of the joys of the early days of lockdown last year was Tim Burgess' listening parties on Twitter.

The Charlatans' lead singer came up with the idea of inviting other musical artists to discuss an album of theirs on Twitter, while followers listened to the record at home at the same time.

Burgess is going for a Welsh theme today, hosting a listening party with the Super Furry Animals after Wales' game against Belarus.

As you can see, the frontman is getting into the spirit with his message of 'Cymru am byth' (Wales forever).

  19. 'Logistical nightmare'published at 13:34 British Summer Time 5 September 2021

    Belarus v Wales (14:00 BST)

Wales have faced a "logistical nightmare" ahead of today's World Cup qualifier with Belarus in Kazan, according to manager Robert Page.

Teams from the United Kingdom and the European Union cannot enter Belarus by air because of sanctions against the country's government, meaning the venue for this game was switched.

The match will be played behind closed doors at Kazan's Central Stadium, with three of Wales' fit players unable to obtain a visa to travel to Russia.

"Logistically it's been hard work for us," said Page.

I think what Robert Page has struggled with is not having every player fit and available to choose at one point so it's hard to know what his ideal starting line up would be. I think he'd like a more fluid front three or four but you have to have the players available to do that.
