    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

In the other Group C match this evening, Italy have made a blistering start against Lithuania and are 2-0 up inside 15 minutes.

Moise Kean opened the scoring and Giacomo Raspadori has just added a second. That's more like it from the European champions.

That was a great chance for Lavery. He showed blistering pace but the ball just kept sticking under his feet, he couldn't get the ball in front of him and get the shot away.

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

This is great from the hosts.

Northern Ireland come charging forward again and Switzerland eventually scramble the ball clear after a half-chance for Jordan Thompson.

That's given the GAWA another level of noise, not that they needed it. Windsor Park is rocking.

  5. CLOSE!published at 19:54 British Summer Time 8 September 2021

    Northern Ireland 0-0 Switzerland

Awh, so close! Shayne Lavery fires wide!

Craig Cathcart launches an aimless ball forward, but Lavery, quick as you like, takes a brilliant touch to take him in behind the Swiss defence.

He's racing towards goal but just can't get the ball out of his feet. He eventually works it onto his right foot but the Reds shirts are around him and Lavery's effort from the edge of the area is just wide of the right-hand post.

What a start that would have been.

Murat Yakin is looking slick on the touchline.

It's not quite Roberto Mancini levels of cool, but the Switzerland boss is pulling a bold suit combo in Belfast.

Ricardo Rodriguez, not the most popular man after 2017, whips in a low cross but Craig Cathcart is there to clear any looming danger away.

England in 2005. Spain in 2006. Switzerland in 2021?

Northern Ireland do love a big Windsor Park night at the start of September and, with 16,000 in attendance, Ian Baraclough will hope the GAWA can be an extra man for his side.

David Healy was the star on both of those famous nights. He's now hung up his boots but is one of our studio guests on BBC Radio Ulster - we'll take any good omen we can get.

To make any inroads in this group I think we have to win this game. To have any chance we need one big performance and one big result in the group.

Northern Ireland have had two good results against Lithuania and Estonia but the big test is tonight. If we can get Steven Davis on the ball and he can spray a few passes I think we have half a chance.

The stadium music has been more important than ever in the last year at Windsor.

It won't be needed just as much tonight, of course, with the fans back in. That doesn't mean a bit of Bits n Pieces won't help to get the party started.

Now, though, it's cranked up another notch with Sweet Caroline. England may have tried to borrow it during the Euros, but it's a Northern Ireland anthem and always will be. Don't let anyone tell you any different.

It's not fully bouncing just yet, but Windsor is well on its way.

Keep 'er lit Green and White Army.

We can feel energy already in the stadium. Hopefully we can keep that going and make sure they are with us from start to finish. Seven of the guys starting tonight were with me in the Under-21s, it's a new era and a win puts us second in the group with four games to go. We spoke at the start of the window about putting ourselves in a position to do it and it's down to us now.
