Dumbarton manager Jim Duffy tells BBC Scotland: "They gave everything they had. We wanted to make sure the players did themselves justice and they did that.

    Scottish Championship

There's also a couple of big games in the Scottish Championship.

Stumbling runaway leaders Hearts can take a major step towards the title and a quick return to the top flight if they win away to another side who have hit a slump in form - Dunfermline Athletic.

The Pars are desperate to bounce back from squandering a 2-0 lead to lose at Dundee and then being hammered 5-1 away to neighbours Raith Rovers to slip outside the promotion play-off places.

Meanwhile, the bottom two are in a head-to-head over at Gayfield, where hosts Arbroath can move above Greenock Morton with a two-goal win over an Alloa Athletic side who would surely be consigned to relegation should the four-point gap at the bottom get any wider.

  4. Patient Aberdeen 'rewarded' - Sheerinpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 3 April 2021

    FT: Dumbarton 0-1 Aberdeen

Aberdeen caretaker manager Paul Sheerin tells BBC Scotland: "The longer the game goes on, the more precarious it becomes. We asked them to show patience and they got their reward. We were well worth the win in the end.

"We could be more ruthless, especially in the first half, but the fact we stuck at it was really pleasing."

Asked what he thought incoming manager Stephen Glass would think about the display, he adds: "We'll catch up with him on the way home and see what he's thinking."

Aberdeen scrape through to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup with a one-goal win over Dumbarton for a second season running.

They needed a late penalty last season and this time it is a Callum Hendry goal with seven minutes remaining that sends the Premiership side through.

The League 1 part-timers will take heart from giving the visitors a few frights along with way as they now concentrate on the rest of their hectic schedule and trying to avoid relegation.

Just when it looked to be heading for extra-time, the Premiership visitors make the breakthrough.
