The debate over the penalty will rumble on, but the fact is both Everton and Tottenham are in real danger of being cut adrift of the race for the European places as things stand.

Neither side will be happy with a point tonight, so hopefully both are ready to have a real go in the second half.

Dave: Mourinho's keeping his plan to stop Spurs losing a lead a secret from his players as well as the press.

Zahi: Dear Everton, plz win tonight and damage Spurs Champions League ambition for 2nd year running so Harry Kane can push for a move to City. Thanks, a City fan.

I think it's soft but in today's game it is a penalty. In the football we all want to see, it's not a penalty. The consistency of referees has been very poor. We are in danger of rewarding diving. Is it enough? Maybe it would be better for VAR to say he's brought that a little bit. There's no doubt in today's game that any form of contact in the box is a penalty it seems. There's a bit of stupidity from Sergio Reguilon's side in terms of flying in. It's a tough one. I think it's soft but it doesn't surprise me.

There wasn't much time to look at the stats behind Harry Kane's 20th goal of the season due to Everton's quick equaliser, so here's a few for you...

    • Harry Kane has scored 20 Premier League goals for a fifth season. Only Alan Shearer (seven) and Sergio Agüero (six) have done so in more Premier League seasons.
    • Since Mourinho took charge of his first Spurs game in November 2019, Harry Kane has scored more goals than any other Premier League player in all comps (44).
    • He has has now overtaken Jermain Defoe to move into joint-seventh on the all-time list of Premier League scorers with 163, level with Robbie Fowler.
    • Kane has also scored 11 goals in his last 12 games against Everton in all competitions, including seven in seven appearances at Goodison Park.

Everton recovered and have come out fighting and pressing really strong. They have got into some really good positions. They have had some other opportunities and Hugo Lloris has stepped up to the mark when required. There needs to be more from this Spurs side.

You would expect Ben Godfrey to go back across goal with that chance. He was under a bit of pressure but I thought he could go back across and keep it alive.

  9. CLOSE!published at 45+1 mins

That's a superb delivery from James Rodriguez!

The Colombian whips in a free-kick from the left at pace and Spurs don't know how to deal with it.

The ball is allowed to bounce and Ben Godfrey races in at the back post to meet it, but sends his shot over the bar.

Each time you watch the replay of Sergio Reguilon's tackle on James Rodriguez, it does look less and less like a penalty.

That's no consolation for Tottenham right now though, and the visitors will be desperate to get into the break level following a good period of Everton pressure.

Andy Rudd: I’m an Everton fan, it was harsh to be behind, but that ‘penalty’ looked very soft to me. James certainly ‘won’ it from what I have seen. We will need all the help we can get with our lean attack though.

Dennis: Imagine Spurs dropping points after going ahead once again.

It's a really slick move. James Rodriguez just doesn't get it in the corner. It's a good save from Hugo Lloris!

How cool is Gylfi Sigurdsson on the penalty? He's composed and upright. He just strokes it into the bottom corner. It's one of those where you don't foul. Sergio Reguilon just gets tangled up. You can't go near anybody in the penalty box otherwise you'll get punished.
