If they were making Newport County The Movie, this would have been the script.

Having been 2-0 up on aggregate at kick-off, that lead was wiped out within eight minutes.

They were 3-2 down on aggregate when Nicky Cadden struck shortly after half-time.

But Michael Flynn brought on 'the old brigade' as first 42-year-old Kevin Ellison and then Joss Labadie came off the bench to score and put Newport 4-3 up on aggregate.

Jamille Matt made it 4-4 on aggregate and took it to extra time before Nicky Maynard scored in the dying moments of extra time.

So Newport will play Morecambe in the League Two play-off final at Wembley on Monday, 31 May.

If it is as good as this game was it will be a classic.

Forest Green interim boss Jimmy Ball told Sky Sports:

"We've got a lot of disappointed men in there who have given everything they could. That is all I can ask of them.

"I asked for a reaction and I got one. I asked them to be brave. We were.

"The players have to have full hearts in there. Football is cruel.

"Maybe we just didn't have enough quality. Maybe we could have dominated the ball better when we went ahead but we didn't and then we ran out of legs at the end."

Newport match winner Nicky Maynard told Sky Sports:

"It was frantic from us at the start. We wanted to frustrate them but they came out of the traps well and we were a bit slow to start and got back into the game.

"It was backs against the wall for us but we dug deep. We knew we had goals in us."

Kevin Ellison says he was contemplating life after football after being released by Morecambe last season.

But Newport took a chance on the 42-year-old and he repaid them handsomely with a goal this evening.

"That's why we love football isn't it," Ellison told Sky Sports.

"They got a 2-0 lead and the gaffer brings the old brigade on and we changed the game luckily enough.

"I've got people who have written me off year after year an I'm here again to prove the doubters wrong.

"You look at August last year, I was about to start at a factory doing shift work 9-6 and stuff like that, but here I am going to Wembley next week.".

Paulsheff9: Premier League is sooooo boring. EFL games are proper football full of passion and guts. Premier League does not offer anything close.

Daft Penguin: Forest Green must feel like they've been gutted. And people say non-league football is poor. As much as I, a Southend fan, am gutted we got relegated this year, if it means we get to play teams that give everything like this every week, I can't wait for next year.

    Forest Green's players are gutted.

You have to feel for them as they take a lap of honour amongst the limited number of fans who have been allowed in.

It's another season in League Two for Forest Green, who now look to try and appoint a new manager with Jimmy Ball in temporary charge after Mark Cooper's sacking just over a month ago.

How do you sum that up?

What a game. Newport were 2-0 down after eight minutes - that's 2-2 on aggregate.

Then 3-2 down after Nick Cadden's goal before Kevin Ellison and Joss Labadie put Newport 4-3 up.

But right at the death Jamille Matt made it 4-4.

Extra time and Nicky Maynard's late goal sees the Welsh side go through 5-4 on aggregate.

You have to feel for Forest Green, but Newport will be over the moon.
