    Northern Ireland 1-0 Malta

The referee is definitely keen for half-time to come and he blows up bang on the 45-minute mark.

It looked like the floodgates would open when Jordan Jones scored inside two minutes but Malta improved and were unlucky not to be level at the break.

Josh Magennis saw a penalty saved by Henry Bonello and it's all to play for in the second-half.

    Northern Ireland 1-0 Malta

Montebello plays in a teasing cross and Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Niall McGinn decide to leave it, thinking it will drift out of play.

The only problem with that is Josephy Mbong is steaming in at the back post and is inches away from equalising for Malta. Another let off for Baraclough's men.

Northern Ireland can't get going and we haven't created much. I don't think Ian Baraclough can be happy with this. I don't see what they are trying to do. Malta are the better side now - they are more comfortable on the ball.

In the world of technology and medial wonders, Ali McCann is running around with an old-school tissue up his nose to stop a bleed he picked up earlier in the game.

It's not quite as iconic as Terry Butcher...

Things have settled down in the past five minutes or so. This has been a decent game so let's hope this doesn't drift into 'end of season friendly' mode.

  7. CLOSE!published at 17:25 British Summer Time 30 May 2021

    Northern Ireland 1-0 Malta

Luke Montebello misses a sitter to bring the sides level!

Mbong plays a raking ball to the far post and the unmarked Montebello opts to go with his right foot and he powers the ball into the side netting from eight.

That is a big, big let off for Northern Ireland. Ian Baraclough is fuming on the touchline!

  8. GREAT SAVE!published at 17:22 British Summer Time 30 May 2021

    Northern Ireland 1-0 Malta

    Bonello keeps out Magennis' penalty!

In a complete contrast to the Man United/Villarreal penalties during the week, Magennis goes for power and straight down the middle.

Bonello is diving to his right but gets enough on it to keep it out. Great save and it keeps Malta in the game.

    Penalty Northern Ireland!

Gavin Whyte is wiped out by Kurt Shaw as he takes a shot on goal. Thankfully he lifts his leg as the challenge came in and he's able to continue.

Ohh, that was nearly a great equaliser.

Joseph Mbong goes on a mazy run before cutting in on his left foot. He curls it towards goal from the edge of the area and it's not too far wide of the far post.

That's the glimpse of the team who drew with Slovakia. Northern Ireland need to be careful while there is only one in it.

Excuse me for laughing but that was ridiculous. It was a terrible ball from the right-back and Jordan Jones fires home. We've seen all season teams playing out from the back - that's very well if you have players who can execute it. This is a wonderful example of a team who can't.

Scrap that, it's nearly another disaster. Goalkeeper Bonello gets caught in the right back position as Malta try to play out from the back once more.

However, Gavin Whyte's touch lets him down and it goes out for a goal kick.

After a shaky start Malta are starting to see more of the ball. They're not threatening but getting some confidence-building touches after that horrible start.

Not that any nerves needed settling, but that's exactly what Northern Ireland and Jordan Jones ordered.

With so many senior players missing it's a big chance for others to make an impact and Jones, who has impressed in patches for NI without setting the world on fire, nets his first senior goal.

Jordan Jones scores inside two minutes!

Malta are punished BIG TIME for trying to play out from the back. It's a comedy of errors and Jones picks the ball up on the edge of the area and he fires home past the stranded goalkeeper.

That's the perfect start for Baraclough and Northern Ireland.

The teams are out at the Worthersee Stadion.

One thing we won't miss about empty stadiums are the national anthems, or rather the players' renditions of them.

    It's a no from me.

Northern Ireland defender Daniel Ballard will miss the Malta match, but it's great news for him as he helps Blackpool earn promotion from League One in a 2-1 play-off final victory over Lincoln City this afternoon.

    Congratulations, Dan!

  20. 'Two important games'published at 16:51 British Summer Time 30 May 2021

Northern Ireland v Malta (17:00 BST)

Ian Baraclough is still looking for his first win as Northern Ireland manager inside 90 minutes. Can he do it today?

"These are two important games - we want to come out of these with two positive results.

"We have prepared well, with good intensity, and integrated the younger players. The senior players have helped in that regard, showing them what it's all about.

"It's a big sacrifice for the players to come out on a trip like this at the end of a season but their attitude in training has been superb and we are ready.

"To have someone like Stuart leading us out gives everyone confidence."
