Jack Hendry
Sensational start for Scotland!
The Dutch are caught out as they try to play out from the back, with Stuart Armstrong winning possession back near the opposition penalty box.
I'm not sure what centre-half Jack Hendry is doing up there but he picks his spot like a seasoned striker, drilling the ball into the far corner from 20 yards.

Kieran Tierney has a pop from 25 yards and the shot whizzes narrowly wide.

Quote MessageDumfries has got to put that across goal. In that position you drive it across the face
Netherlands 0-0 Scotland
Not as dramatic as it sounds.... Denzel Dumfries stumbles past a challenge and fires off a shot from a very tight angle. Craig Gordon is guarding his near post and the ball skims of it and goes behind.

Quote MessageVery positive so far from Scotland. You hope Forrest can play in the opposition half more than his own like he has been doing early on
Netherlands 0-0 Scotland
A nutmeg from Kieran Tierney in his own half... Ole!
Netherlands 0-0 Scotland
Scotland on the front foot right away, with David Turnbull getting a couple of nice early touches.

And away we go on a beautiful evening in the Algarve. It's a balmy 22C as the sun starts to dip out in Portugal.

The national anthems are almost done. Scotland in their pale blue and white away kit.

Scotland have six wins against the Netherlands, including the first three meetings, way back in the 1920s, 30s and 50s.
We can't waist an opportunity to wax lyrical about Archie Gemmill's fabulous solo goal at the 1978 World Cup.
It was the diminutive midfielder's second goal in a 3-2 victory that had the Tartan Army briefly believing a disastrous campaign could be salvaged.
The last success came at Hampden in the first leg of a Euro 2004 play-off, with James McFadden firing in the only goal.
The less said about the return leg in Amsterdam the better...

This is the 20th meeting between the nations and the first since the Dutch won a November 2017 friendly 1-0 at Pittodrie.
That made it four victories in a row for the Netherlands against Scotland, with an aggregate score of 11-0. Gulp!

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke has confirmed that the players who did not travel were only left behind as a precaution, rather than mandated self-isolation.
"The medical staff are very thorough and spoke to all the players and we decided just to be ultra-cautious coming here tonight," he told Sky Sports.
"We came with enough to cover the games. We're only allowed to make six substitutions anyway tonight. It was very, very precautionary but the correct decision.
"There's no self-isolation or none of the close contact stuff you get at home. It was just that these players had more close proximity to John (Fleck) than most. With the tournament coming up it was better to err on the side of caution.
"It doesn't really change it too much to be honest. Out of the team I had in my mind to start, there was two, maybe three, but one of the boys we left behind has a little knock anyway and probably would have missed out anyway."

The Netherlands opened their World Cup qualifying bid with a 4-2 loss in Turkey in March, followed by comfortable wins over Latvia and Gibraltar.
Scotland kicked off their quest to reach Qatar 2022 with a 2-2 draw at home to Austria, followed by a 1-0 loss in Israel and a 4-0 success against the Faroe Islands at Hampden.
After losing four of their first five matches under Steve Clarke, Scotland have lost just two of their subsequent 14 games (W7 D5).

We're seeing fewer friendlies these days with the advent of the Nations League and neither side has enjoyed much success in recent times.
The Netherlands have won just one of their last six internationals with nothing at stake (D4 L1), winning 2-1 against Peru in September 2018 under Ronald Koeman.
Scotland have lost eight of their last 10 friendly matches (W1 D1), although this is their first such encounter since October 2018 when they lost 3-1 to Portugal at Hampden.

Quote MessageTierney could play in a back two, Hendry could play right-back or Forrest could play wing-back. It's a flexible team. I think Steve Clarke will start with a back three

Former Ajax and Barcelona star Frank de Boer is the Netherlands manager and he has fond memories of his brief time in Scotland with Rangers.
"If you see Scotland play, you see mature football with qualities," he said at yesterday's media conference. "It's not only what a lot of people in Holland think about Scottish football. No, it's a really modern style of European football.
"I had my own experience in Scotland for six months and had a fantastic time. I know how involved the fans are. I played against Scotland in 94 and maybe Scotland and Holland have the craziest fans, but also the nicest fans in the world."

Quote MessageIt's a manageable group. Czech Republic is a winnable game. England is a big challenge. Croatia back at Hampden, they struggled against Armenia with most of their top boys playing. That's a winnable game as well. They can get a draw for sure in that
