  1. Keeping an eye on Group D opponentspublished at 19:11 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

Scotland start the Euros against Czech Republic at Hampden on 14 June. England and Croatia are our other Group D opponents.

England, on a four-game winning run and one of the tournament favourites, are taking on Austria this evening, while Croatia were held to a surprise 1-1 draw by Armenia last night.

The Czechs, who lost a recent World Cup qualifier in Wales, have got warm-up games against Italy and Albania coming up.

  2. Favourable draw for Netherlandspublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

While it's been a whopping 23 years since Scotland last lined up at a major finals, the Dutch are also making a welcome return to the big stage.

They missed Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup but got through without any fuss this time, running Germany close for top spot in qualifying.

The Netherlands, who won the tournament in 1988 and have finished third four times, are up against Austria, Ukraine and North Macedonia in Group C and will fancy their chances of topping that section.

  3. New generation of Dutch masterspublished at 19:03 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

The Netherlands can boast a long list of legendary names, from Cruyff and Neeskens to Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard, Kluivert, Davids Sneijder, Seedorf, Bergkamp, Van Nistelrooy, Robben and Van Persie.

The current team may be missing captain Virgil van Dijk, but they appear to have found a good blend these days with the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay backed up by youthful talents Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek.

These games aren't just important for guys like Turnbull, they are also important for the senior players. If your form isn't right going into a major tournament, should loyalty come into it? I don't think so...

It's great to see Turnbull get a start in such a big game against pretty decent opposition. For Hendry, this is a third start in the last four games. I think if he plays well tonight he's in against the Czech Republic. It could be a big night for him

  6. Covid costs Cillessen his place at Eurospublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

The Dutch have also had coronavirus problems, with Valencia goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen testing positive.

The 32-year-old has since been dropped from the Euro 2020 squad altogether, with manager Frank de Boer calling up Marco Bizot.

"We don't know how long it will take until he is 100% fit again," explained De Boer. "I don't want to take any chances in that regard.

"We are on the eve of a European Championship and I want certainty."

That leaves Maarten Stekelenburg and Tim Krul battling for a starting place once the tournament gets under way.

I don't see any reason for Steve Clarke to change what he's been doing. I think the system will stay the same. It's good for the players to keep playing the same system. If you chop and change it can make a difference

Scotland winger Ryan Fraser is catching up with his former Bournemouth team-mate Nathan Ake, with both men on the bench this evening.

Now at Newcastle, Fraser has not played any football since turning out for Scotland in March. It would be a real boost if the winger can get some minutes on the pitch before the Euros get started.

  10. 'Every player must be ready to step up'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

Scotland manager Steve Clarke told Sky Sports: "Every time we come together I'm saying to the lads in training everybody is important and you never know when you're going to be asked to play.

"Certainly in these uncertain times you never know when you are going to be asked to step up. Hopefully they can keep impressing - they've all impressed me so far in training."

  12. Can we borrow a right-back, Gareth?published at 18:27 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

England manager Gareth Southgate named four right-backs in his 26-man squad yesterday and tonight Scotland have none, since Stephen O'Donnell and Nathan Patterson are among those stuck in Alicante.

It looks a bit like Steve Clarke is opting for a wing-back solution, with James Forrest on the right and Andy Robertson on the left.

That leaves a back three of Jack Hendry, Liam Cooper and Kieran Tierney.

It's a pretty strong XI, given the absentees, and late arrivals Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour could get a run out after all since they are included among the substitutes.

  13. Turnbull makes first Scotland startpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

  14. Late arrivals not in line to playpublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

Manchester United's Scott McTominay and Chelsea's Billy Gilmour missed the first few days of camp in Spain, having been involved in last week's European finals.

The midfield duo are in Portugal now but are not expected to feature this evening, tying Steve Clarke's hands that bit further.

McTominay played 120 minutes of United's Europa League final loss to Villarreal, while Gilmour was an unused sub as Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy.

  15. Six left behind as 'precaution'published at 18:15 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

News of a positive Covid-19 test John Fleck broke on Tuesday, with the poor Sheffield United midfielder confined to his hotel room at Scotland's base in Alicante.

The rest of the squad returned negative results and we were told no one had been classed as a close contact.

Today, it was decided that David Marshall, Stephen O'Donnell, Nathan Patterson, Grant Hanley, John McGinn and Che Adams were to stay behind in Spain as "a precaution".

It was stressed that there have been no more positive tests in the camp but it is not clear if the above players are self-isolating along with Fleck.

  16. Depleted Scotland ready for Dutch testpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Netherlands v Scotland (19:45)

    Good evening.

We should be buzzing with anticipation as Scotland prepare for the first of two warm-up matches for the European Championship finals, with the tournament up and running from a week on Friday.

However, we have an unwelcome distraction since the damnable virus has cast a shadow over the Scotland training camp, depriving manager Steve Clarke of seven players for a meeting with the Netherlands in Portugal.

Our radio coverage is just getting started and nearer to kick-off we'll bring you news of the patched up team plus the build-up before the action gets started at the Estadio Algarve.
