The rain is still coming down and the pitch is playing really quick with the slickness of the pitch. That's suiting Torquay at the moment.

At the other end Hartlepool forward Rhys Oates goes on a great solo run, but his shot is tame and gathered at the second attempt by Torquay keeper Lucas Covolan.

    Good start this.

I think it was for pushing in the area.

But that seems very harsh. The Sweet Caroline goal music is slowly faded out and we're still goalless.

Torquay fans are livid after that goal was disallowed.

Looking at the replay it's hard to see why.

But the Gulls have had the best of the opening period so far.

A real let-off for Pools that. Fortunately, the linesman's flag went up very late while the Torquay players were celebrating.

Armani Little whips in a brilliant ball from the free-kick which is headed into the net by Kyle Cameron with Hartlepool's defence all over the place.

Torquay players run off to celebrate, even the goal music is played. But referee Simon Mather has ruled the goal out.

  9. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 6 mins

    Hartlepool 0-0 Torquay

Hartlepool have the ball in the net but referee Simon Mather blew his whistle a long time ago.

A rare break up field results in a corner for the Pools. It's whipped in and caught by keeper Lucas Covolan who's pushed into his own net - inadvertently - by Gary Liddle.

    A free-kick, nothing more.

What a noise as the teams come out.

This is the biggest crowd for a National Legaue game since before Covid-19 - there's around 6,200 here today.

But it feels like so much more!

Torquay have now spent seven seasons outside the EFL, in which they have had to battle their way back from the National League South - their lowest league placing.

"Every year big teams come out of the league into the National League," Gulls boss Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Devon.

"And they don't get out straight away so it shows how difficult it is.

"The teams that go up do ok, they survive and compete. We know how tough it is, and we'd rather suss out League Two next season than stay in this league again."

Ashton Gate will be a familiar setting for the former Robins boss, whose son Lee also played and coached the club who will host the two finalists.

Hartlepool United's potential return to the English Football League would be a landmark moment for the club, players and in particular boss Dave Challinor.

Challinor spent the majority of his professional career in the league with Bury, Tranmere and Stockport, and wants the same status now as a manager.

"I want to make sure I can class myself as that," he told BBC Radio Tees. "I certainly know for all the players, we've talked about just being here not being the pinnacle.

"My ambition when I started managing in 2011 at Colwyn Bay was to be a Football League manager, and I've not had the honour to be able to do that.

"We're aspiring to be better and aspiring for this group to be a successful one. By five o'clock on Sunday, being able to say they're Football League players will be something huge for them personally, huge for us as a group but most importantly, massive for the club to get back to where it should be."

Simple enough for Hartlepool as Dave Challinor names an unchanged starting line-up to the side that beat Stockport County last week.

Hartlepool XI: James, Sterry, Odusina, Liddle, Johnson, Ferguson. Featherstone, Holohan, Shelton, Armstrong, Oastes.

And Gary Johnson is also happy to stick with the same XI who started Torquay's semi-final win over Notts County. It means 36-year-old Danny Wright gets the nod. He had been nursing a hamstring injury.

Torquay XI: Covolan, Wynter, Cameron, Hall, Sherring, Lewis, Moxey, Little, Randell, Wright, Lemonheigh-Evans.

With Wembley being used for Euro 2020, this year's National League promotion final has moved to Bristol City's Ashton Gate ground.

It may not have the arch, but it is still a massive venue by National League standards.

Torquay fans - who often travel hundreds of miles for an away game - have had a relatively quick 90-minute drive here, while Hartlepool fans will have taken about five hours.

    Hartlepool v Torquay

Hartlepool - who finished fourth in the regular season - are competing in their first play-off since losing the League One final to Sheffield Wednesday in 2005.

Rhys Oates' long-range stunner sank Stockport in the semi-finals, while Oates also netted twice in their eliminator win over Bromley the round before.

Torquay finished their campaign in second, four points off National League winners Sutton United.

In the semi-finals, extra-time goals from Asa Hall and Dean Moxey saw Torquay United beat Notts County 4-2 in a pulsating tie at Plainmoor.

Our attention now turns to the promotion final at Ashton Gate. How are your nerves?
