What an impressive stadium the Johan Cruyff Arena is in Amsterdam.

For Wales' group games, they played at huge, bowl-like grounds in Baku and Rome with quite some distance between the fans and the pitch.

By contrast, you feel like you're right on top of the action inside this compact stadium.

  5. Welsh fans soak up atmosphere in Amsterdampublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 26 June 2021

    Wales v Denmark (17:00 BST)

Welsh fans who live outside the UK are starting to fill the bars around Amsterdam.

Covid travel restrictions means supporters from the UK can't travel to the Dutch capital for today's last-16 encounter - but that doesn't prevent ex-pat Welsh people making the trip to see their team.

There's still a few hours before kick-off in Amsterdam but the few Welsh fans going to the game are already at the ground in anticipation.

"We feel unbelievably lucky to have the game here in Amsterdam," said Kelsie Armstrong, 30, who is originally from Pontyclun near Cardiff but now lives in the Dutch capital.

"It’s the only thing we’ve been talking about. We’re wishing them the best of luck but whatever happens it’ll be a good experience and a time to remember.

"No matter what happens, we’ll be there supporting the team."

  9. 'It's our duty to make Wales proud'published at 13:34 British Summer Time 26 June 2021

    Wales v Denmark (17:00 BST

    BBC Wales News

Lisa Harrison knows she and the few Welsh fans inside the Johan Cruyff Arena later will have a job to do against an expected 4,000 Danish fans.

Covid travel restrictions mean Welsh fans from the UK can't travel to the last 16 encounter in Amsterdam - but Lisa is one of a select few Welsh fans able to go.

The 28-year-old is originally from Cardiff but now lives in the Dutch capital and she knows "it is our duty to make Wales proud and be there for the team.

"We will make as much noise as possible," she told BBC Wales outside the ground.

"I am a bit nervous but I think we can pull it off - we can do it. It’ll be a big night if we win - a big night here in Amsterdam.”

It just so happens that Covid restrictions ease slightly in the Netherlands today so pubs in Amsterdam can remain open until midnight.

England have been training at St George's Park today, and Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount have trained in isolation, each of them on a separate pitch to the rest of the squad.

The Chelsea pair have had to self-isolate as a precaution after coming into close contact with Scotland's Billy Gilmour, who later tested positive for Covid-19.

  13. Barcelona 'raise urgency' to complete new Messi contractpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 26 June 2021

    Guillem Balague
    Spanish football journalist

Barcelona are pushing for Lionel Messi to sign a new contract before his current deal runs out on 1 July.

Contrary to reports, not everything has been agreed, but in the past 24 hours the club has raised the level of urgency shown in previous weeks, with a desire to announce the agreement before the start of next month.

Messi's contract renewal is new president Joan Laporta's main priority and he is currently negotiating it directly with Messi's father and representative, Jorge Messi.

To be able to keep the Argentine, the club will have to reduce their wage bill by around 200m euros (£172m) and to meet La Liga's Financial Fair Play requirements. Laporta is happy to offer the 34-year-old a new two-year deal.

Barcelona think Messi would like to go to Major League Soccer in the USA after the Qatar World Cup in 2022, although they would love to see him return to the club after that in any role or capacity of his choosing.
