  4. 'Italy's midfield three will be fundamental'published at 13:19 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Everyone remembers the great Spanish midfield that attracted lavish plaudits during their imperious three-tournament run between 2008 and 2012.

Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets. The list goes on.

In the 2012 final, Italy were simply outclassed by Spain's craft and guile, but Italian football expert Nicky Bandini feels the Azzurri's engine room of Marco Verratti, Jorginho and Nicolo Barella could be the deciding factor in tonight's semi-final at Wembley, especially given that jet-heeled left-back Leonardo Spinazzola is absent for Roberto Mancini's side.

"I do think that midfield three will be fundamental in this game since Leonardo Spinazzola isn't there," said Bandini.

"I think Barella, making those breaks forward from midfield, is expected to be the one to break the lines and the one who is supposed to join the attack. Without a greater impetus on the wing, we should see a greater emphasis on his ability to get forward."

  10. Euros win would be 'step number one' for Mancinipublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Roberto Mancini has won three Serie A titles and a Premier League during his two decades in management, but re-establishing Italy as the dominant force in world football remains his ultimate goal.

So Mancini, according to Italian football expert Nicky Bandini, views the European Championship as "step number one" in his grand plan for the Azzurri.

That plan has gone swimmingly by the way: Italy have won 28 of their 37 games under the 56-year-old, losing only twice with a goal difference of +74. That's what Spain are up against.

"He famously never played in a World Cup," said Bandini. "Right from the beginning Mancini has talked about wanting to win a World Cup with Italy, so from his point of view this is only step number one at the Euros.

"But it certainly feels like part of his narrative since taking over the national team - to perhaps right that wrong from his playing career, that he didn't have the impact internationally that he did certainly for his club sides."

Earlier (see 10:47) we asked you which nation has the best cuisine, Italy or Spain, just for a bit of fun.

  14. Will striker shortcomings cost Spain when it matters most?published at 12:17 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

Spain are into the semi-finals of Euro 2020 - but only just. They needed a penalty shootout to scrape past Switzerland in the quarter-finals, after surviving a scare against Croatia in the last 16.

Luis Enrique's side had 28 shots in total against Switzerland - 10 on target - but they were wasteful, with goalkeeper Unai Simon picking up the man of the match award.

'La Roja' may be the tournament's top scorers but could a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal ultimately cost them?

Here we crunch the numbers to try to find out.

  16. 'Italy the favourites despite Spain's growing confidence'published at 12:08 British Summer Time 6 July 2021

    Italy v Spain (20:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Despite their triumphant Euro campaigns in 2008 and 2012, not a lot of people would have backed Spain to reach the semi-final stage this time around.

And while they failed to set the tournament alight with draws against Sweden and Poland, they scored 10 goals across their two wins over Slovakia and Croatia before holding their nerve to edge out Switzerland in their quarter-final shootout.

But, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Marca writer Juan Castro says confidence in Luis Enrique's side has grown.

"I think people are quite optimistic in the sense that at the beginning of the tournament we were so pessimistic, we had no confidence in this team," said Castro.

"But game after game, Luis Enrique's team has performed really well so people are reasonably optimistic. We know Italy are favourites because they have played better than us."
