Sean Turner: Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is a big name, literally, but he won't be a big miss for Arsenal tonight. His pre-season has been where last season finished. I won't be surprised if he's "unwell" for weeks.

  5. 'Arsenal see the potential in White'published at 19:30 British Summer Time 13 August 2021

    Brentford v Arsenal (20:00 BST)

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ben White will end up being value for money, the price is high for what he is - Arsenal have probably paid over the value. But at the end of the day the value is what someone is willing to pay, Arsenal see the potential in him.

I love his mobility, that's something they did have to bring to that back-line. He gets off the ground quickly, he moves his feet well and he can still do that with the ball. He's got all the criteria but can he fit into that team and shoulder that responsibility as a young player - I'm sure he will be a success at the club.

  6. Has Covid created a 'European Super League' of big spenders?published at 19:28 British Summer Time 13 August 2021

Lionel Messi's Paris St-Germain move analysed by Financial Expert Tim Bridge

Project Big Picture was swatted away. Proposals for a European Super League were torn apart. But the harsh financial inequalities of top-level football remain.

Indeed, it could be argued that the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated them.

English football said an emphatic 'no' to Big Picture and the Super League, the two major plans put forward in the past year that would have given more power and financial muscle to the biggest clubs. A wave of self-congratulation then swept over the domestic game - principles had won out over finance.

    Or so the story went.

  7. 'Brentford have to get Toney on the ball'published at 19:26 British Summer Time 13 August 2021

    Michael Brown
Former Man City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm really interested to see how Ivan Toney gets on, 33 goals, super return and if you look at the recruitment over the past few years at Brentford they kept selling player after player and knocking on the door of the Premier League and not getting there.

They finally get this wonderful stadium and they've just got to get a good start, get some confidence, they've got to get Toney on the ball. Get some crosses in, play with a good tempo. It's going to be tough for them because everyone will be looking at him.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank gets a rousing reception as he comes out to conduct pre-match media duties. Huge credit to him how he masterminded The Bees' recovery from losing the 2020 Championship play off to Fulham to win promotion last term.

And all done after selling his players of biggest profile, Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins.

He's done a superb job and tonight is the reward.

  11. 'Brentford will put Arsenal under pressure'published at 19:19 British Summer Time 13 August 2021

    Brentford v Arsenal (20:00 BST)

    Michael Brown
Former Man City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

This Brentford side will put Arsenal under pressure and when you hear there's no Alexandre Lacazette, no Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang you wonder what's going on there - it's the last thing that Arsenal need. Yes they've had some signings and you wonder what type of style we'll see, if there'll be anything different and what we're going to see from Mikel Arteta.

Notably Ben White will be the huge talking point, he's really comfortable on the ball but is there any more grit in that defence, that still worries Arsenal supporters and when they're missing that threat at the front of the pitch as well, it's going to be difficult.

    Arsenal

Arsenal's Mikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports: "[Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette] feel unwell, that's all I can say. Instead of thinking of excuses, we think of solutions so that's what we will do today.

"It is a really young [Arsenal] team, full of excitement and energy and that's what I want to see on the pitch.

"The chances come for different reasons in your career. [Folarin Balogun] has one today so he better enjoy it.

"[Brentford] are very dangerous. They are very exciting and it was deserved. They had a long journey to the Premier League. They fully deserve the position they are in.

"We want to keep going, keep improving and we know this league is a long marathon. Today is day one so let's enjoy it."
