  1. 'Really poor five minutes cost us'published at 14:48 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    Man Utd 5-1 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds goalscorer Luke Ayling, speaking to BT Sport: "We kind of got back into it. We scored a goal but were 3-1 down before we could get our breath back. We’ll go back, see what happened and try to get it right for the next game.

"We said at half-time to keep it tight, try to get forward a bit more and create chances. Some might say we scored too early in the second half. A really poor five minutes in the second half cost us the game.

"I know it’s a bad result for us but it’s great to see the fans back here. We can’t wait to get back to our place next weekend.

"We were beaten by four [at Old Trafford] last year, so it’s nothing new to us. We did alright at the end of the season. There are a few lads who have come back late from internationals. We’ll go again."

FT: Man Utd 5-1 Leeds Utd

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Everyone's been mentioning Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool but, after today, when you've not got Varane, Martial, Sancho, Cavani, Lingard or Rashford starting, the question will be asked: are Manchester United in the race for the title?

If you get Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes playing that well - on the same pitch, at the same time - they are a massive danger to anybody, not just in the Premier League but in Europe.

They were fabulous, world class, and both of them working together was stunning to see. It was a joy to be part of that, to see that and hear the noise of the fans being back in.

  8. 'Focus is game by game'published at 14:38 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    Man Utd 5-1 Leeds

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, speaking to BT Sport: "We missed the fans, we are really happy with this result. We waited so long, so everyone's happy for them today. We’re really happy with the result."

On Paul Pogba: "People talk about the quality of Paul, but his quality is not in discussion. We know what he can do and today he showed that. He’s an important player for us. We know to expect these kind of performances from Paul."

On his hat-trick: "My objective every season is being better than the last one. Every performance I do, I want to do better and better. I've started with three goals but it’s a long way [to go]."

On the coming campaign: "We know the quality of the players who have come in, but the team was already very good. We showed it last season. We didn’t win trophies, but the team was growing up. Our focus has to be game by game. We’ll achieve something with this mentality."

  9. Fans bound towards Goodisonpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    Everton v Southampton (15:00 BST)

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport at Goodison Park

The Everton and Southampton players are roared onto the pitch for their warm-ups by what will eventually be a full house at Goodison Park for the first time since 1 March.

Even the general hubbub inside the stadium is a strange sound after so long without fans.

Walking across Stanley Park it was great to see kids decked out in full kit and adults wearing the club's new shirts as they bounded towards a home which has been out of bounds.

I'm sure they, and I, can't wait for the noise at kick-off when this raucous old ground bears its teeth. It's been a while.
