  1. 'What we'd missed for so long'published at 20:05 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "The occasion was great. It was exactly what we expected and what we'd missed for so long. I applauded the Norwich fans as well because it's so nice to have fans back, wherever they come from.

"I could see in the eyes of the players they had to get used to it again. Everybody has to get used to the atmosphere. We had to get used to the opponent and the game, but we found a way. It was a very professional performance and I'm happy about that. There were a few occasions where we should have done better, so it was not perfect, but it was about the result.

"Mohamed Salah has trained well, the forwards have looked really sharp, but as soon as it starts getting competitive again, he goes to the next gear, and he showed that again today."

On Virgil van Dijk's return: "After that long time being out and the pre-season he had, being back on the pitch feels different, you could see all his class. It was hard for him to go for 90 minutes. we'll see if he has enough time to recover."

  2. 'We have a special bond with our fans'published at 20:02 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Liverpool

    Norwich City

Norwich manager Daniel Farke, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is always difficult when you lose the first game but I just have compliments for our lads today. We had a tricky last few weeks of pre-season. It was tricky to play one of the best sides in the world. Several of our players had a tricky pre-season. Several missed lots of time. We had many players out. The energy was there and we were competitive for 65 minutes. The second goal made it tricky. But I was pleased we didn't concede more after the three goals. It is not easy. I still can't explain how we didn't score after the set-piece situation [Ben Gibson's chance]. We deserved a goal. It was deserved win for Liverpool but positives to take.

"Many key players were not in their rhythm. I am pleased with Billy Gilmour. He could have been more careful in his passing choices, but he was excellent. Quite pleased with all our signings.

"It is our living room [Carrow Road] and we have a special bond and unity with our supporters. I think they appreciate what we have done. It was great to get this welcome and humbling.

"We know we always have their backing. This is what football is all about. It is not just about money but to share experiences together and be united. To celebrate some good results. In general it is a completely different game without them.

"We have a tough start but no complaints. You have to play each team at home and away. We use this first game as a way to get some rhythm in the players. We want to be competitive next weekend."

  3. Capacity crowds return for first Saturdaypublished at 20:01 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

After 19 months of empty seats and eerily quiet stadiums, capacity crowds returned in force on the first Saturday of the new Premier League season.

Social distancing measures at sporting venues were lifted following the easing of Covid restrictions in England on 19 July.

Brentford stunned Arsenal on a thunderous night in west London on Friday, and the atmosphere was no less buoyant around the grounds on Saturday.

Speaking after his side's victory over Leeds at Old Trafford, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said the return of supporters "creates and sets the mood".

"You get the butterflies again," added the Norwegian. "Suddenly it's a game that matters.

Scott Allen-Johns: While a 3-0 win might feel great, truth is, Norwich made that harder than it should of been. It could and should of been easier than it was. For these new to the league teams, underestimate them at your own risk.

  5. 'Football is back'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "We had two games against Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna, and they were really good games. It was a good sign that we're ready to go, but when you start the league it's different.

"We had to find our way in the game and scored three really nice goals because we forced them. It's a good start.

"The boys are fit but you have to get used to the feeling again, that it's really exhausting but you can [still] go. You have to get over that point in the game, and we did, and hopefully next week we'll be fresher for longer.

"It's great to see the fans back and I hope that Norwich celebrated as well because they had an exceptional season. Their pre-season has not been easy [due to Covid-19 protocols], and facing us is not too easy, but we were really professional.

"We were not here to show the most exciting football, just to get the basis for the new season, and we did. Football is back."

  6. 'We have to improve more and more'published at 19:52 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson to Sky Sports: "It was really good to be back with crowds for the first time officially. It wasn't the best presentation we did so far but it was enough to get three points and a clean sheet is important for us.

"Really good to have all the players back and everyone fit. [Andy] Robertson is not in but hopefully soon he will be back with us. It is really good to have Virgil [van Dijk] and Joel [Matip] in front of me. They give a lot of sense of safety.

"[My save] was needed to keep a clean sheet. I don't think the save affects the result but it feels good. It feels as good as scoring last minute... No, no no!

"It could be 1-0 which would have the same importance so I am always ready to help the boys.

"We can improve a lot of things. We can have more consistency during the game and we had a lot of mistakes which I think is normal at this stage of the season. Pressing could be better but we did enough to win the game.

"We had lots of good opportunities to score. We just have to improve more and more. I am focusing on doing my job."

  7. 'Positives to take'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Liverpool

    Norwich City

Norwich boss Daniel Farke, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is great to have them [the fans] back. Football without them is not the same.

"In general I have many compliments for our lads. We struggled with many odds against us. We had to train with 11 key players and had to cancel two friendlies. We had to train for two weeks with 10 first team players. The energy was there. For 65 mins we were competitive. In the end it was a deserved win for Liverpool. I was pleased we showed maturity not to concede more than three. Our reaction and maturity in this moment... there were many positives to take.

"I am more confident after this game than before [about Norwich's survival chances]. We had attacking threat and good movement in the final third. It was difficult in the moments we conceded. We can take many positives from parts of the performance."

  9. 'You can't predict where you'll be'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 14 August 2021

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Fit-again Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk speaking to Sky Sports: "It's amazing. It was a tough game. In the end 3-0 sounds comfortable but at times, especially at the end, we were making it difficult for ourselves. Maybe that's fatigue, maybe we can do better - we'll have a look at it.

"But to be back out there helping the boys... I just hope to continue that and see what it brings. I need games but the manager knows it, I know it. It's a good start and now we have time to recover for next week."

On returning from injury: "The first day of training with the group, you need to get back into normal habits, like shouting at people. It's just repetitions of normal habits. I made great steps in pre-season and this is another big step, so hopefully I can keep that going.

"Mentally it's tough. One day you're fully fit, the next you're full of medication and in pain. Everyone has their opinion [on what happened] and you read those things because you have nothing to do. [We had] more injuries in key positions so couldn't play our game, the way we want to play, with high pressure. The guys did a fantastic job to come through it. Hopefully we can build on it and stay fit because we can't take that for granted either."

On challenging for the title: "The only thing we can focus on is the next game. It's exciting to see the Premier League like this, all the players coming back, and I enjoy it.

"Thinking about our own team, if we stay fit, we have a good chance to be up there. To play against world-class strikers again and world-class teams, and when you can't predict where you will be at the end of the season, it's exciting."

Norwich City have now lost 11 consecutive Premier League matches; only Sunderland have ever had a longer losing streak in the competition’s history (20 ending in September 2005).

Since he joined Liverpool in 2017, only Kevin de Bruyne (50) has assisted more Premier League goals than Mohamed Salah (35).

Norwich defender Ben Gibson, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was great to have the fans back. We have missed them. It is my first experience of the Norwich fans and they were right behind us. They are our 12th man. We'll need them.

"It is fine margins. We know what they are capable of. We have our principles and were brave to play around the press. But we got punished. But we are playing some of the best players in the world. We will stick to our principles and look to do them better.

"It is a new season and new team. It is always going to be tough for a Norwich against Liverpool. But we have to roll our sleeves up and give it 110%. There is stuff to improve on. We have to do things better."
