VAR is having a look at that clearance from Tyrone Mings' header. It hit Jamaal Lascelles' arm...

This could well be a penalty. David Coote is heading to the monitor.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

Jacob Murphy, who was perhaps lucky to avoid a booking for a dive in the first half, does get his name in the book for a foul on Newcastle's right and it means John McGinn can deliver.

The visitors make hard work of clearing it and Tyrone Mings sees his header hacked off the line.

  4. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

Not a bad sub to bring on.

    Martin Keown
Former England defender on BBC Final Score

Demarai Gray has got no right to score there, he puts it through the defender's legs and spins on to his unfavoured left foot and really that's inspirational.

He has been inspirational since he's been there, last week he was whipping crosses in and he's just thought I'll have a go here and unbelievably it's squeezed in.

Against the run of play I should mention as well.

Give him some freedom and it shows what he can do!

  6. CLOSE!published at 16:16 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    Leeds 1-2 Everton

Demarai Gray is absolutely buzzing right now. He looks to be a shrewd signing already, scuttling in down the right this time to fizz a ball into Dominic Calvert-Lewin's path after a smart one-two with the Everton forward, who sees his effort scrambled away by Illan Meslier.

  7. CLOSE!published at 16:14 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Brentford

Palace threaten for the first time in a while as Christian Benteke rises to meet Joel Ward's cross but heads over.

Great goalkeeping this from Ederson, flying way out of his area with a diving header as Milos Rachica looked to close in.

    Demarai Gray (50 mins)

    How about that!

Demarai Gray collects the ball on the left of the box, lets it run between his legs to outfox his marker and then somehow sneaks a low effort into the far corner beyond Illan Meslier.

Smart finish from a tight angle for the Toffees new boy. Rafa Benitez will love that.

And just like that, the visitors are in front once more.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Newcastle

Newcastle did pretty well in the first half before that Danny Ings cracker. They're having to do a bit of defending early on in the second half though as Matty Cash looks to creep in at the back post - the right back can't get enough on Emiliano Buendia's deep cross.

City looking to add to their tally but Rodri's first-time strike from outside the box is blazed over.

Seamus Coleman is like Peter Pan, still scurrying around like he's 21... Everton look to release Alex Iwobi on the right but the ball skids off the surface and away from the winger.

  13. CLOSE!published at 16:09 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Brentford

Not so easy for Ivan Toney at this level, he was banging them in in the Championship but the Brentford striker loses flight of the ball and completely unmarked he ends up shouldering an effort from six yards out which Vicente Guaita punches away.

  17. 'Great way to start my first full Anfield campaign'published at 16:03 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

    Liverpool

Liverpool goalscorer Diogo Jota to BBC Match of the Day: “I scored in a friendly game here but officially it’s a different feeling – what it counts for, and I think it was a great way to start my first full Anfield campaign.

“The atmosphere is massive for us, I’ve played here as an away player and I know what it feels like. The fans are really important for us, we need to take advantage of that and I think today 2-0 was a good result, a clean sheet and the team is improving, and that’s the most important thing.

“The first goal is always the hardest in a game, most of the times it is the one that unlocks the game and that’s what we want to do. If it comes in the first half, that’s massive for us because it gives us the opportunity to control the game differently."

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Norwich are a long way behind, they've hardly got out of their half. They need to hope that City take their foot off the gas, if City go at it again, there will be more goals.

  19. KICK-OFFpublished at 16:02 British Summer Time 21 August 2021

    Leeds 1-1 Everton

    Phil Dawkes
    BBC Sport at Elland Road

A very entertaining first half at Elland Road. Leeds have been the better side, looking the more threatening and dominating possession.

But Everton are a threat, especially when Demarai Gray gets on the ball and runs at the home defence.

It's very, very loud here and it is packed with needle and spite (especially when Patrick Bamford and Yerry Mina go anywhere near each other). It's ace.
