Brighton boss Graham Potter speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Fantastic header from Duffy, he’s a monster in the box. He is so big and strong to stop. So it was a great goal.

"We played well first half and it was nice to get the second and give us a cushion.

"Watford responded as we anticipated and when we had to defend we did that and did it well.

"We felt like we wanted to get the third and we had a few chances to do that. And as they threw more attacking bodies on it becomes harder to control things so we had to see the game out and I thought we did that.

"Back to back wins at any stage are hard to achieve. We are in a good place, but it is just a start."

On Neal Maupay’s shoulder injury: “It’s early, but we are hopeful. Days more than weeks. But it is disappointing for him as he was doing really well.

"By his own admission he did not have the best of seasons last year. But like anyone you learn from it and come back stronger and he has shown he can do that.”

Watford

More from Watford manager Xisco Munoz, speaking to Sky Sports: "In the second half I think the team gave a very good performance. We need to learn quickly about the Premier League.

"Sometimes this happens in football. We need to stay narrow sometimes. We've had a hard start but we need to continue like this, giving the maximum. In the Premier League if you make one mistake, you have a problem.

"We need to understand the mistakes. For me it’s normal. That’s not the problem, the problem is we need to learn about the first half. The most important thing for me is the reaction from the guys [at half-time]. We need to learn and prepare for the next game.

"Everybody knows the Premier League is the best league in the world. It’s important everybody stays together. I promise you we’re working very, very hard. It’s one step back, but we have to try to make two steps forward."

Watford

Watford boss Xisco Munoz speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I think we need to learn quickly about the Premier League. The positive thing was in the second half we gave a very good performance.

“We need to continue with the same ambitions and try to learn quickly from the first half.

“In the second half they had chances to change the result, but sometimes these things happen in football and we need to learn for the next game.

“I think the first half was two mistakes - one bad pass and one problem with set pieces - and we concede 2 goals. And this is the big problem in the Premier League.”

Up next for Brighton, after a League Cup trip to Cardiff on Tuesday, is the visit of Everton on Saturday. Watford host Crystal Palace in midweek before heading to Tottenham on Sunday.

Shane Duffy speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It’s been a long year and I've missed the place. The reception from the fans was brilliant all day. It feels like home here and it was great to be back.

"The first half especially I thought we controlled it and in the second half they had nothing to lose and threw it all at us, but I thought we defended well and could have even added more.

"Really pleased to get our first home win. Good start, six points.

"You can see from the kick-off we were straight after them and it was the fans who gave us that adrenalin. I’m delighted they are back and I hope it can continue."

Alf Wilson: Leon Bailey didn't even get on the bench today. Muggins here only had him in midfield in FPL. Hey up... Who's my first sub? Shane Duffy.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton goalscorer Shane Duffy speaking to Sky Sports: "A very special day, everyone knows that with the fans back and first home game.

"We got off to the perfect start - we controlled the first half. Second half they went for it and had nothing to lose, so we take credit for digging in. It was a special day for the fans and it was rocking.

"It was amazing. It is just a special place for me and to score here, first home game back after a difficult year, it will sink in tonight. I am delighted for the lads.

"You have got to believe in yourself, it will take a lot to keep me away. I am delighted the club have given me the chance to help me and get me back, if I can help the team in any way I will.

"I am turning 30 next year and still trying to prove people wrong, I thrive off it."

Watford

Watford, meanwhile, have lost seven consecutive away Premier League games for the first time since losing their final seven on the road in 2016-17 under Walter Mazzarri - though six of those defeats before today came at the end of their relegation campaign.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton have won their opening two league games in a season for the first time since the 2015-16 Championship campaign, while the Seagulls have also gone six consecutive Premier League matches without defeat at home (W4 D2), just the second time this has happened (previously between September and November 2017).

And only Chelsea and Manchester City (13 each) have kept more Premier League clean sheets in 2021 than Graham Potter's side's 10.

That victory lifts Brighton to second in the Premier League table, behind Liverpool. Soak it up, Seagulls fans. The likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Leicester, West Ham and Tottenham are still to play this weekend and could move above them on goal difference.

Brighton will just try to keep this now and wind down the clock. Won't they? Solly March clips a ball into the box and it runs back to Jakub Moder, who charges down the right before winning a free-kick.

Corner for Watford... is this the chance to grab one back? Nope. Solid defending from Brighton again and good hold up play from Aaron Connolly when it breaks his way to win a free-kick.

Into three minutes added on.

Neat footwork from Enock Mwepu and he suddenly finds himself approaching the Watford box. The Brighton substitute winds up and effort but skews it wide of the target.

Oghenekaro Etebo lines one up from distance but Shane Duffy throws himself in the way of it. Ambitious from the Watford midfielder but they are getting a little desperate with two minutes plus added time remaining.
