Arsenal were booed off at the end of both halves, with this defeat meaning they have no points or goals from their opening two league games.

Their boss Mikel Arteta saw positives in the home crowd - back in full number for the first time in 18 months, calling it a "good reaction" to "unprecedented circumstances".

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was delighted with Romelu Lukaku and the additions he makes to the Blues' game. A "deserved win", was how he described it.

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live after today's loss: On today's performance: "It is about the result at the end, we are here to win football matches, we wanted to give something to our fans after such a long time without playing in front of them and we didn't manage to do that.

"To be fair I thought Chelsea were the better team, and deserved to win the match and they showed why they are the champions of the Champions League."

On the gap between the clubs: "It is difficult to decide that when you [do not] have nine big players. That is a big reason for the gap.

"I don't like too feel sorry for myself, it is the situation we are missing. I think everyone can see at the moment we don't have the squad that we want and it seems to be more difficult by the day. These young players are giving their maximum, it is their first or second time they are playing in the Premier League and they are playing against a top, top opponent."

On what went wrong: "In our organisation we struggled to win the ball back earlier and when we had them in really good zones they managed to come out. We didn't hold them enough.

"We had big moments with one-on-one against opponents, with three or four players in the box to get what we wanted and then they managed to go really well when they scored the first goal."

On the reaction from the fans: "I must thank the fans from the beginning with how they were with the team, even in the second half when things were looking difficult they tried to give the players a push and a boost.

"You cannot ask fans to be patient, they want to see the team winning - that is passion and that is the way it should be.

"You have to understand the situation we have, we are missing nine players, and it is difficult, it is not just nine players they are some big, big players."

  4. 'Club haven't faced anything like this in its history'published at 19:18 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tells BBC MOTD: "I don't think the club in their history have faced something like this, we have to face the challenge, the league, or table is not decided in August. The worst thing you can do is throw in the towel, we certainly are not going to do that."

On Romelu Lukaku: "He has managed to do that with every defender in Europe last 10 season, that is why he is the world class player he is. We tried, they are a top side and that is why they won the Champions League they were the better team today. Even when he was tight he managed to get the ball away, we wont the ball in other situations. With the quality players they have, they find the solutions and congratulations to them for the way they played."

On Covid situation at the club: "It looks like the group today is the one we will have for the rest of the week."

On potential signings: "Anything can happen, we can have have players in or out."

"The crowd were right behind the team from the beginning, when you are losing you cannot expect them to be happy. They have given all the support they could. When we don't win, they have to show that and that is natural."

    On Kieran Tierney injury: "Thigh".

"There are a lot of positives, five players 19 or 20-years-old playing at this level for the first time, that will have a positive impact but at the moment it is difficult."

  5. Lukaku 'already proved his value to the squad'published at 19:13 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live after their comfortable win over Arsenal: "It was a good match of football, fantastic atmosphere from the start. It is not like we controlled the game for the entire 90 minutes. I thought at times in the first half we were sloppy. I felt a bit like we had heavy legs. So in some moments, we felt like we suffered a little bit physically and had easy ball losses.

"But in general I am really happy and it was a deserved win. and it is the best way to start a season, to not concede goals and give chances away.

"What a start for Lukaku. In the beginning he struggled to touch the ball at a little bit. Then he was very well integrated. He proved his value for the squad already, he linked really well with Mason and Kai up front and gave something to the game that we did not have already.

"We can play very direct and to the last line. He can hold the balls but he is also very strong in turning and winning the one-on-ones he is a constant dangerous player witha big personality that helps.

"Reece James was good, he came back with a lot of confidence from the Euros, I think he can still improve in sharpness and decision making and I think he can be more confident in going forward but I hope it helps him to assist and to score today, and at the same time he was a key player to keep Tierney on our right side so well done.

"We are still in reality, we was fourth last season and we needed help from our rivals. We are capable to produce top performance this is what we have proved in the last half a year and we would like to continue. We have the feeling that we have something to improve and we just want to close the gap.

"If you want to compete for any title we need a strong squad and it is my job to manage the squad and we need a good balance between competition and friendship and pushing each other. Because this was maybe the key factor in the last half a year. We have a strong squad and we have a lot of games to play."

  6. 'I see positives with the crowd'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports: "They were the better team. When they play at their best, which I think they did today, they are champions of Europe, have world class players and to match at that level is difficult.

"You can always do things better. In the first half it took us a long time to regain the ball in wide areas. We concede two goals but the way the team responded and the crowd never gave up, it gave us hope in the second half.

"I see a lot of positives with the crowd today. The way they supported the team from the beginning. I saw a good reaction. It is one of the difficult moments. The circumstances are difficult and unprecedented. Feeling sorry for yourself doesn't help. You have to win football matches, keep it together and show spirit.

"Starting tomorrow in training with the players which did not play. We need to win the game midweek and that will help against Manchester City next weekend."

  7. 'We controlled the match'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I was impressed with the result at half-time. We could have played better. We were not as sharp as we can be. We digest a long week as we gave them a big load with players coming in late. From time to time there were heavy legs and sloppy in passing. But we overcame the difficult moments with quality and luck. We controlled the match in the second half. Still room to improve."

On Romelu Lukaku: "We don't expect too much. We know his profile but we did not give him too much information of how to play for us. He has his strengths and he linked up well with Mount and Havertz today. Now we can work on the details. He scored and was always dangerous. He adds something to our game. We can play more direct. He is experienced enough now to be clever on the field."

On the defensive display: "We were once lucky with a set-piece from a header. These moments can change momentum and we need to work to reduce thee moments. I don't expect us to be on the highest level as we had a unique pre-season. We need to work to improve our capacity."

  8. 'Great to score against a tough opponent'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea defender Reece James, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is great to score against a tough opposition. To help the team is a great feeling. We started so well. Sharper. It helped settle the game down - the two early goals.

"Romelu's performance speaks for itself. Everyone saw how well he played today and used his body.

"When we play this formation you have licence to go. Part of the job is to defend as well. The more players that can score in the team, the more chance you have to win games. That showed today.

"The team is very strong. We have top players in all positions. When one goes off another replaces him. It keeps competition high."

  9. 'Dominant, I would say'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku tells Sky Sports: "I am very happy with the win, we played very well and dominated. We could have scored more but coming here with this performance, we have to continue like that."

Asked about his performance, Lukaku said: "Dominant, I would say. I try to improve every time, I have a long way to go but today was good to win. We have to win and keep going, the Premier League is a very competitive league.

"I try, I try. At the end of the day, you want work hard for the team, score and create chances. I have worked on that and this team is very talented. They are the European champions and they want to keep building and I want to keep winning. We have to keep fighting and keep delivering performances like this.

"You saw a lot, not only from me but he team adapted really well and they made life very comfortable for me and I was not stressed coming into the game. I only had one thing on my mind, winning the game and I am delighted for the club and fans.

"It is good to start like this, I worked hard throughout the week, we knew wit was a big game and we did well. As an individual, I want to help the team and I want to continue doing that."

Lukaku looks like a guy who has returned home. You could see with the fans they wanted to welcome him back in.

Lukaku getting his first goal here just sets him up. Chelsea fans are going to be delighted.

It is going to be the goal that gets the headlines, but it was the hold up and the way he linked up with his teammates.

  12. Romelu Lukaku 'a super talent'published at 18:47 British Summer Time 22 August 2021

Former Republic of Ireland striker on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Lukaku causes problems, you have got to credit him, he went away and improved his game, he knew what he had to work on. He has huge praise for Conte and he is brilliant now.

When he was at Man United people used to complain that he didn't have a great touch, but today his touch was immaculate. He knew when to pass the ball, when to run with the ball and he was unfortunate not to get a second.

Last season when the ball was coming out, if Chelsea was under pressure, Werner was not holding the ball up. I think Lukaku will help Werner because I don't think he is a natural number nine. Lukaku is a natural number nine.

He was unplayable today Romelu Lukaku but we all expected that because he is a super talent.

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel tells Sky Sports: "I had a feeling in the first half we lacked a bit of sharpness and were a bit passive. I think we had a long training week with double sessions and were a bit leggy. We deserved to win but still room to improve."

On Romelu Lukaku: "I am very happy with how he has integrated already, a very smart guy who likes to be in the group. He is a very democratic leader, talks to everyone, friendly and is totally competitive. He gives us something we did not have, to protect balls. You cannot start better than a goal and he assisted some chances.

"I didn't expect too much but I wanted to see his capability to adapt and to link up, that is what he did very good and the guys like to play with each other.

"I don't know if it is possible to manage games in the Premier League, in some moments it was too open. They created some overloads on each side and we had to overcome but we were in control defensively. We could create some chance. In the Premier League when you don't score the third or fourth you can never be sure."

On Reece James: "He was not at all unconscious and was worried he broke a tooth, that is why he was shocked.

"It is a perfect start, two victories without conceding and a London derby. It is a new group, some players left, some came in and you need these moments where you suffer so we are absolutely happy with the start. We are still in the process and need to keep going."

I think it has been an excellent performance from Chelsea, Azpilicueta, Lukaku and James were outstanding but it was a good performance from Chelsea overall.

Arsenal were lacklustre. The first 15 minutes were really good but didn't deserve anything after that.

The Chelsea fans are currently going through a list of chants designed to taunt the Arsenal fans who are still to leave the ground. "You're going down" being one of them.

It is only two games but Arsenal have zero points, are yet to score and have conceded four.

The Gunners will, in fact, end a day in the relegation zone after more than one game of the season played for the first time since August 1992.

    And there's more...

In what is their 118th campaign in England's top four tiers, Arsenal have opened a league season with two defeats and no goals after two matches for the first time in their history.
