West Ham United

"I felt we played well with the ball, but we didn't do that in the final third. I think we were poor, we didn't have the connections. It may have had a lot to do with the players being away for the international break, we have just got them back for a little bit of Thursday and yesterday, so I will put it down to that."

On the red card: "[Antonio] had been booked for the first one you just don't make any more challenges and give the referee a decision to make. My feeling was from where I was it was probably a booking and he got sent off for it."

Did he ever consider not starting Ronaldo? "No. Of course not. This is what Cristiano is about. This was a day for everyone to enjoy."

On Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo: “Good players can always play together. They have a mutual respect and play for Portugal together.

"It’s too early for me to predict where we’ll end up. We have to be consistent and let’s see where we are.

“It’s changed [the atmosphere]. A few months back you think how it was here. This is what Man Utd supporters should feel like."

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce speaking to BBC Sport: “We had more than one or two opportunities [to spoil the party]. We had chances, created opportunities but I am disappointed we have given away some poor goals and that has cost us.

“The first goal is the big one. We deserved to be 0-0 at half time. That is the instinct, he [Cristiano Ronaldo] follows it in and my two defenders don’t and that gets him the first [goal]."

On Callum Wilson: “I cannot put a timescale on it. It’ll be touch and go whether he is ready for next week.”

On Cristiano Ronaldo: “That is the goalscoring instinct of a centre forward, where our defenders haven’t followed it in and he is on the end to get a tap in and change the game.

“If there is a genuine superstar among everyone, then this kid is with what he has achieved. We have witnessed it again today. He is something else."

Southampton

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy: "We knew how tough it was going to be, playing West Ham in the past has always been difficult, but I thought we really showed up today. Defending we were excellent and looking at that second half there I thought we had a couple of chances to go on and win it.

"When [Broja's shot] came back off the post I thought on another day that is going in. The boys put in a massive shift from back to front and I thought we deserved more.

"I didn't know much about Bowen's shot, he has turned quickly and hit it. Luckily I am in the right place at the right time but I am delighted to keep the first clean sheet of the season."

Newcastle backed off Fernandes and you can't do that with someone of his ability, What is it, 23 yards? He showed he can put it in the top corner. It was poor from Newcastle not closing him down. Man Utd have got goals in them; Martial came on and Cavani wasn't even on the bench. That is what makes teams better.

Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl to BBC Sport: "A few inches were missed today, I think we had the better chances to win the game.

"With a little bit more luck we could have won it. We tried something a little bit different today, we tried to invite them to play a little bit more.

"Finally the game plan was working, the first clean sheet was more than deserved because they didn't get into our box often.

"What was missing was the final punch in the chances we had. Armando [Broja] showed he is a very good sub. He was immediately onto the opposition and had some threats that are new to this team. This was good to see and gives me a lot of confidence for the future.

"Everybody in the team did what we wanted to do. We picked the players that stayed with us for the two weeks and didn't go on international duty. They stayed with us to work on what we wanted to do and it worked really well."

Freddie Woodman had a poor game today, but Ronaldo punished Newcastle. I thought Newcastle offered a lot on the counter-attack; there were two or three times where a better final pass gives them a better situation. Man Utd had better forwards on the pitch and that'll be the difference for them this season. Ronaldo keeps on going and going; there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

Norwich City

Norwich City boss Daniel Farke tells BBC Sport: "The performance was really good. Especially after a difficult spell in the beginning of the game. I got the feeling after minute 25 we controlled the game and were pretty close. To lose the game is tough but it's reality and we have to accept the loss.

"We could have been a bit more clinical and cutting edge that's a fact but in general it was a tight game and for that one goal was decisive.

"We are disappointed. Football is all about being efficient and putting points on the table. You don't get points for beautiful football, for that I'd do synchro swimming. We have to make sure we perform like today and show steel and prove our cutting edge in front of goal. We have to concentrate on the performances and then the points will come automatically."

Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tells BBC Sport: "We are really happy. We knew it was a really tricky game and we got what we wanted which was to win the match and to get points on the table. We had to suffer but I knew to win the game it would be like this.

"After three defeats things get complicated. I must say it has been the best 10 or 14 days in my professional career. Not the easiest, but the best. You learn a lot in difficult moments, who you are with. In difficult moments when you see the people and the level of organisation and the fans we have. They were ready to suffer today but they just give, give, give to the team. Today and the last week everything glided together.
