  3. Bailey praises support of family and fanspublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 18 September 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 3-0 Everton

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey tells Sky Sports: "It means so much to me, to accomplish what I did in the 21 minutes. My family was here and the fans chanting my name when I came on. It is such an amazing feeling. I feel I have welcomed myself here as a Villa player.

"My son is here, he is a great part of my life and had motivated me. My girlfriend has been a backbone for me and my brother has been supportive. I felt comfortable and I felt I needed to do it for them and the fans.

"In the moment I just said I am going to smash the ball. It was bouncing, I took the time to be relaxed, focused to make sure I hit it properly.

"The injury was from the shot, I hit it too hard and started feeling stiff in my quad. I don't think it was anything too serious but didn't want to risk it."

Last week we lose 3-0 to Chelsea who were only marginally the better team. This week we win 3-0 against Everton when only marginally the better team. In the end it all balances out.

    Aston Villa 3-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure speaking to Sky Sports: "We had chances to score and the game could have been different. In the Premier League, every game is tough; they scored a goal and got the momentum, after that it was up to us. It was different because we were away from home and they had the support of the fans. In the next game, we will bounce back."

  6. 'I had a dream last night I was going to score'published at 20:00 British Summer Time 18 September 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 3-0 Everton

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalscorer Matty Cash to BBC Sport: "It's an unbelievable feeling to get my first Villa goal here. To get three points was most important.

"To celebrate in front of my family was brilliant.

"It means so much. I had a dream last night I was going to score. I need to dream more. I scored in front of the Holte End [in the dream]. Surreal moment. I'm really happy to be playing in front of these fans.

"In that moment I tried to keep my composure. To see it go top corner was brilliant. I was going mad. I always do when I score."

  7. 'Bailey is a special player'published at 19:56 British Summer Time 18 September 2021

    FT Aston Villa 3-0 Everton

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was an arm-wrestle at times, certainly first half. We probably had more territory without creating clear-cut chances, their goalkeeper has made a really good save from Tyrone Mings and they flashed the ball across the face of goal. In the second half, we started really well, but they had a five minute spell before we scored and we decided to put Leon Bailey on for Matt Targett, because he was playing so high up anyway. They were always a danger on the counter attack, so we had to be at our best. Really pleased with the manner of the goals."

On Matty Cash's goal: "He used to be a right-winger at Nottingham Forest, so he enjoys being right wing-back. I told both our wing-backs, him and Matt Targett, 'when we've got the ball, go forwards'. They had that mindset. It was a great move and a great goal."

On Leon Bailey: "He's a special player, we're really glad that we've got him. I thought he could cause them problems."

On John McGinn's concussion: "He got a knock on the head about five minutes in and thought he was OK to carry on. Around the 26-minute mark, he got another whack and there was a break in play, and he alerted us to it and the doctor kept an eye on it. He called us and said he was too dizzy."

  8. 'We made mistakes'published at 19:49 British Summer Time 18 September 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 3-0 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Rafael Benitez tells BBC MOTD: "I think that we started the game quite well, we had a lot of situations on the counter in the first half and the final decision was not right. We had a couple of chances in the second half then conceded and again soon after. We started with too many problems but the team was fighting well.

"Sometimes if you have players you can make situations and have fresh legs. In some positions we were short of legs.

"Salomon Rondon, Demarai Gray, Alex Iwobi, we had some situations where it could have been different.

"We made mistakes too soon, too early, too close and it was difficult to react. Hopefully we can manage that in the future."

On when Jordan Pickford, Richarlison and Seamus Coleman will return: "At least one or two weeks minimum, we have to see."

  9. 'There's no better place'published at 19:45 British Summer Time 18 September 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 3-0 Everton

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith to Sky Sports: "I thought we were the better team in the first half but didn't create as many clear-cut chances as we'd like. I felt five minutes before our goal, they were on top.

"Matt Targett was playing really high and I thought why not get Leon Bailey on there.

"Leon put the corner in for the goal and scored the third. The first goal was great build-up and Matt [Cash] has put it in the top bin.

"I thought Leon would lift us a bit.

"He's really special. He's a really good player. That's why we got him here. He's a good lad, the lads love him. He's really humble and a good person. I hope it's just a tight thigh, that's what he said to the doctors. We hope we caught it in time.

"Brilliant. I've got a special affinity with the stadium and supoorters. It's a special stadium - when it's rocking under the floodlights there's no better place.

"We were on the reverse of a 3-0 last week and it felt unjust. I felt we kept up to our standards today."

On John McGinn's head injury: "He got a whack on the head. He got another whack. He felt fine to carry on [after the first one]. There was a break in play when he alerted me to it and I told the doctor. You're guided by the player. He didn't express concussion symptoms when he did it but there was a second one and then he did."

Villa have ripped Everton apart since the first goal, but that foul by Konsa likely prevented Gray scoring a straightforward goal with the form he's in. If Everton went 1-0 up then I wonder how different the game would be now. VAR is supposed to take that aspect away from football. If the foul from Konsa was a yard or so further forward they would have looked at it. Just because it's outside the box doesn't mean it doesn't have the potential to change the game.
