    FT: Besiktas 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have beaten Bestikas although it was closer than it should have been.

The Germans looked in control thanks to Jude Bellingham and Erling Braut Haaland goals in the first half.

Javi Montero headed in for the hosts halfway through seven minutes of injury time but they couldn't find an equaliser.

Tonight is Lionel Messi's first start for Paris St-Germain.

The Barcelona legend has only made one sub appearance, in the 66th minute, for PSG so far, a 2-0 win at Reims last month.

Messi scored a record 672 goals in 778 games for Barca, winning the Ballon d'Or six times - and lifting 35 trophies, including four Champions Leagues.

He scored a hat-trick in his last game, as Argentina beat Bolivia 3-0.

It's all over in Moldova - a famous win for Sheriff Tiraspol.

Sheriff are the first Champions League debutants to win their opening match since Leicester City on 14 September 2016 (3-0 at Club Brugge).

Barca played their first Champions League game post-Messi last night. Tonight, Real Madrid play their first game since the departure of their own Champions League legend - Sergio Ramos.

Like Messi, Ramos joined Paris St-Germain in the summer, with regular centre-back partner Raphael Varane joining him out the exit - to Manchester United - shortly after.

It leaves Real with a much less experienced back line for this competition.

Although they have recruited well, bringing in David Alaba, who knows his Champions League onions, and fellow midfielder Eduardo Camavinga - one of the most sought-after players in Europe.

  5. Inter not what they were?published at 19:35 British Summer Time 15 September 2021

Inter Milan v Real Madrid (20:00 BST)

Speaking of decimated squads, Inter Milan come into this season with a notably weaker setup then the previous campaign.

Antonio Conte is gone as manager, replaced by Simone Inzaghi, with Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi both plying their trade elsewhere.

They have signed talented full-back Denzel Dumfries and others and have started Serie A with two wins and a draw, but real will not be as fearful as they might have been heading to the San Siro tonight.

Inter Milan v Real Madrid (20:00 BST)

Anyone who watched Barcelona get taken apart by a Bayern Munich in third gear last night, could not fail to be struck how lifeless the Catalan side were. They look a shell of club at the moment.

Tonight, we get our first glimpse of Barca's El Clasico rivals Real Madrid in this season's Champions League.

They are clearly in better shape than Barca, with three wins and a draw under their belt from their opening four La Liga games and a squad not utterly decimated by cost-cutting.

  8. 'A proper Champions League group'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 15 September 2021

Liverpool v AC Milan (20:00 BST)

This is a proper Champions League group - Klopp

Liverpool. AC Milan. Atletico Madrid. Porto. Wow.

"This is the strongest group we've had since I've been at Liverpool," said Jurgen Klopp.

"In 2012-2013 at Dortmund, I think we had Manchester City, Real Madrid and Ajax - that was a proper group.

"This group keeps out two really good teams from knockouts and delivers one strong team to the Europa League.

"I never understand when people talk about changes to the Champions League. I like the Champions League how it is and this group shows there are no games where people will think 'do I really want to watch that'.

"It will be exciting from the first second to the last second. I can't see any kind of early decisions made in this group."

  9. 'You can hear the silences when Milan score'published at 19:25 British Summer Time 15 September 2021

Last year, BBC Sport's very own Chris Bevan spoke to some of those who were there to witness the 'Miracle of Istanbul', when Liverpool came back from 3-0 down to win the 2005 Champions League final with AC Milan on penalties.

Here is what Reds fan and radio presenter Colin Murray had to tell him about that game...

"I was there as a fan in the home end, well the end that was meant to be the Liverpool end. All the neutral areas were almost entirely red, and if you listen to the 5 live commentary now, it sounds like it is at Anfield, not in Istanbul. You can hear the silences when Milan score.

"What I remember more than anything is, when the teams came back out for the second half, the trophy was there at the end of the tunnel and the AC Milan players walked past it like it was theirs. Some of them even touched it. It made the comeback all the more sweet.

"Listening back, you remember the important players who maybe don't get the credit as the story is told year after year. Didi Hamann for sure, John Arne Riise, Vladmir Smicer, even Djibril Cisse.

"And Jerzy Dudek of course. That double save of his late in extra-time, that was right in front of me, and I loved hearing the commentary of it years after the event - Mark Lawrenson just cannot let it go - he comes back to it a couple of minutes later to say how he cannot get over how good a stop it was."

  10. 'What a player'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 15 September 2021

Liverpool v AC Milan (20:00 BST)

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is perhaps a tad relieved that Zlatan Ibrahimovic isn't playing. Judging by his comments prior to the news that the forward wouldn't feature, he is clearly a big fan...

"Zlatan. What a player," Klopp said. "I saw videos of him when he got injured a few months ago and saw him on the spinning bike and fighting back saying 'Lions don't rest long' or whatever [he said].

"He's a man for exceptional moments. If he's not playing, Olivier Giroud will play or [Ante] Rebic will play. All really good players.

"Zlatan is one of the best players this game has ever seen. He knows that and he says that to everybody and I like that about him.

"Some careers end even when there is still a bit of fuel in the tank but he squeezes every drop out of his body. He is capable of playing in each league in the world and that is exceptional."

  11. No Zlatanpublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 15 September 2021

Liverpool v AC Milan (20:00 BST)

Sadly (although maybe not for Liverpool fans) AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss Wednesday's opening Champions League group match at Anfield with an Achilles tendon problem.

Ibrahimovic, who turns 40 in October, made a goalscoring return from injury in Sunday's Serie A win over Lazio.

"After the match he had some inflammation," said the Italian team's coach Stefano Pioli.

"We hoped he could play but he still had pain so we don't want to risk [playing him]."

Tonight would have been exactly the kind of game Zlatan would have loved.

That front line of Mo Salah, Divock Origi, Diogo Jota, there's no Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino, Jurgen Klopp's still put out a side that he thinks can win this game.

But at some point, he's got to change it around.

It's not a negative thing about Liverpool, it's just true - they've not got as deep a squad as some of the teams around them and that will come home to roost at some point.

Two-time former Manchester City left-back Angelino goes back to his old club tonight.

The 24-year-old Spaniard was at City from 2013 to 2018, then went to PSV and then rejoined City a year later.

Six months later he went to Leipzig on loan and it ended up becoming a permanent deal.

"It's a weird feeling," he said. "I never thought I would play in a different shirt in this stadium. Manchester City are one of best teams in the world.

"It will always be in my head that I didn’t make it here. It is a shame but it is working well for me at RB Leipzig and I am very happy."

RB Leipzig have lost three of their four Bundesliga games this season under Jesse Marsch.

The American replaced Bayern Munich-bound Julian Nagelsmann in the summer.

They lost 4-1 at home to Bayern on Saturday.

"We were disappointed with the Bayern result but the performance was OK," said Marsch.

"Manchester City is another difficult task.

"We played well against Bayern. It hurt that we weren’t efficient. We are ready for Wednesday. We know exactly what this task involves and how good Man City are. We can play without fear. In a match against top opponents, you need luck. We are ready."

Man City v Leipzig (20:00 BST)

City midfielder Rodri on reaching the final last year and what it means for this season: "We did a great season. We were proud of what we achieved.

"It was the first time in our history that we arrived into a final and all the players in the squad have a little more ambition and experience every year. No regrets about that.

"We're going to learn from this experience."

Pep Guardiola’s City are unbeaten in their last 17 games in the group stage of the Champions League (W13 D4), with their last such defeat coming in September 2018 versus Lyon.

Since Guardiola took charge, City have only lost three of their 30 games in the group stage (W20 D7).

Of the 25 managers to have taken charge of at least 50 Champions League matches, Guardiola has the best win percentage in the competition’s history (63% - 86/136).

This is the first meeting between these two sides - not surprising really since Leipzig were only set up by an energy drinks company a few years ago.

City won all four of their games against German opponents in the Champions League last season (Borussias Dortmund and Monchengladbach).

Leipzig lost twice to Liverpool last season.

Lionel Messi makes his Champions League debut for Paris St-Germain in a front three that also includes Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

It is also the Argentine's first start in PSG colours, having come off the bench away at Reims in Ligue 1 before the international break.

Fellow summer signing Sergio Ramos misses out with a calf injury, however, while new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is named on the bench.

Midfielder Mats Rits comes in for hosts Club Bruges, who make one change to the side that beat Oostende on Friday.

Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita are also restored to the XI, with injured Harvey Elliott out for the long term and Virgil van Dijk, Thiago and Sadio Mane dropping to the bench.
