Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport talking about Lionel Messi's goal: "You see the pace, strength, balance and the technique to put it where he did. It was phenomenal. Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have taken the game to another level.

"He was on the periphery of the game, he is at a new club and feeling his way in. Even superstars have to do that. You see the celebrations after the goal, that is relief. He is not usually so animated after. I love the reaction."

I think the intensity was there for City, they just didn't take their chances - if we watched all the chances they got they had more than enough to win that game they just didn't take them. That's a problem I saw a little bit last season as well when they're in the last third they have a lot of possession but they're always missing that pass or someone is blocking the final ball.

At times they get themselves in really good positions but there is no one in the box and that is what shocked me the most. I don't know if it's PSG having more bodies in the box or if there's just no one making that run into the box. Sometimes they just had no one in the box to cross that ball into.

City are still going to be in and around the mix, they've got a wonderful team, a great work ethic. Pep Guardiola has to find a different way to score goals when it's not happening. There's still that false nine conversation that will be the chat tomorrow - that's inevitable with this football club, that they didn't manage to get a number nine.

But they created a lot of opportunities and I think Pep will say 'that's football' and he will take the positives. He knows it's not do or die with it being the group stages. I think they've got a super squad and they will still continue to progress.

Peter Crouch on BT Sport: "I look at teams like Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United who have spent money but Liverpool's starting XI is as good as anyone - if not the best.

"The reason people aren't talking about them is because they haven't gone out and spent money on a big player like Romelu Lukaku like Chelsea have. But their starting XI is as good as anyone."

Michael Owen on BT Sport: "So far, so good for Liverpool. Top of the Premier League and six points from six in the Champions League.

"It's a very solid start. One or two injuries to the squad but nothing too serious. So far it's good for Jurgen Klopp."

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to BT Sport: "Good performance. We did everything except score. They defended deep and were dangerous with counter-attack.

"My biggest compliment for the team.

"In the second half [Gianluigi] Donnarumma made good saves. The team was there - the same as Stamford Bridge. It's a pity. We played to win. Unfortunately they didn't need much to score their goals.

"The [Messi] goal was fantastic.

"We're going to eat good tonight, drink a glass of wine, recover and prepare for the Liverpool game."

Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "First and foremost the most important thing is the result. It is a massive one away at Porto. Winning, and the way we won, makes it better.

"It was good in lots of moments. We could see Porto watched our last game at Brentford. They started direct. I wanted to get it sorted on the pitch and that’s what we did step-by-step.

"We scored maybe not the most amazing goals but important ones in the first half. In the second-half we controlled the game. Porto had massive problems. One centre-half out with a red card and the other, Pepe, not being able to play before the game. We could use that.

"We played wonderful football between the lines, we lost the ball in a situation we should not have. Defensively we played a super game. Goals happen so I am not too concerned.

"I am happy that Diogo Jota didn’t score, he keeps the goals for games we need them. We did not need his goals in the end tonight.

"It was a really good night for us. After the international break we play Atletico [Madrid] so we will see what the boys coming back are like. It is a good start.

On having momentum to face Manchester City: "It always helps, but against City it does not help alone, we need more things than only momentum.

"We need to play better than we did tonight, that is clear anyway. It will be a completely different game. "City will want to strike back for sure, but we are at home finally after a few games (playing away) without our crowd, so let's give it a go."

I won't say it was defensively disappointing for City I think it was just little mistakes and PSG made the most of it. The first goal I think is a lack of communication between Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias. The player behind, which was Dias, who can see the players and the ball should've pushed Laporte to close the gap. It's these little details.

When you're playing the quality of players on this pitch it's always in the little details.

I don't think City deserved to lose that game 2-0 - credit to PSG. We questioned their defensive intensity and they answered our question tonight even if we didn't see that much of the 'fantastic three' - when you look at the guys behind them they did their job.

Jurgen Klopp laughs when he's asked about Roberto Firmino's "unconventional" goal.

Liverpool

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson speaking to BT Sport: "It’s definitely not job done as we have four games to play. We had two good performances, applied ourselves well and got results we deserved. It’s a good start but it is far from over.

"We’ll be disappointed to concede as I thought we were dominant throughout the game. We scored some brilliant goals and played good football so we have got to be pleased as it is a difficult place to come."

On Curtis Jones: "Curtis has been fantastic. On paper he is so young but I feel like he has been around the first team for years. He has settled and matured really well. He has had to be patient but has come in and done well. He has all the attributes to be a top player."

On his 400th appearance: "I can’t describe the feeling. I still get it every time I put the shirt on. It’s an honour and hopefully I can do it many more times in the future."

We know where all the headlines are going to be. Good performances from both teams, flashes of brilliance. But the headlines will be taken by Lionel Messi and that's what we expect from the great man himself.

He's back and he's with PSG. It's been a great game and ultimately the finishing they had got PSG the win.

Atletico Madrid have really pulled this out of the hat now.

Luis Suarez has surely scored the winner at the San Siro in the seventh minute of added time. It took a VAR check to confirm that AC Milan's Kalulu had handled the ball in the area. He did, and the visitors are sure to take all three points now.
