Man Utd's cause isn't helped tonight by a two-game ban handed out to Aaron Wan-Bissaka by Uefa for his sending off during Manchester United's Champions League defeat to Young Boys.

The defender, 23, was shown a straight red card for a late tackle in the first half of the match on 14 September.

He will miss tonight's game and the home match with Atalanta on 20 October.

Of course, as is always the case in football, there are some fans who may feel Wan-Bissaka's suspension is a help to the cause, rather than a hindrance.

United will also be without injured captain Harry Maguire for Wednesday's game. The centre-back is facing a "few weeks" out with a calf injury, says United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

There's a bit of bite about those two games featuring Premier League clubs.

Man Utd, fresh into this off the back of successive defeats and following a loss in their Champions League opener, against the side that beat them on penalties in last season's Europa League final. Oh yeah.

And Chelsea, the holders, but losers on Sunday to the team they beat in that final back in May, at a European heavyweight with a fair bit to prove after an unusually inconsistent start to the season.

    Yep, that'll do.

  7. Tonight's actionpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 29 September 2021

So yeah, eight games tonight, two of which feature teams from England.

Two of those matches are already under way. That'd be Atalanta v Young Boys, which is of particular interest to Manchester United in Group F, and Zenit St Petersburg v Malmo in Group H, which also comprises Chelsea.

The 20:00 BST kick-offs look like this...

    Group E

Benfica v Barcelona, Bayern Munich v Dynamo Kyiv

    Group F

    Manchester United v Villarreal

    Group G

Red Bull Salzburg v Lille, Wolfsburg v Sevilla

    Group H

    Juventus v Chelsea

Champions League: Messi is almost unstoppable over 90 minutes - Guardiola

As so many teams have discovered in the past, when Lionel Messi shows up and fancies it, there is very little you can do to stop him.

"Unstoppable". Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola actually used that word. And he should know.

Messi's contribution for PSG against City made for a mixed Tuesday night for Premier League clubs in the Champions League. City bad, Liverpool good.

Tonight, we hand over to the red half of Manchester and the current holders of the trophy Chelsea. Do you suspect a certain fella with seven on his back might just fancy coming up with something after seeing his old mucker Messi join this season's party?
