    Whaaaaaat?!

They keep the ball from kick-off and Federico Bernardeschi feeds Federico Chiesa, who lifts the ball over the keeper from eight yards out.

I wonder if this is an injury or tactical. Ben Chilwell replaces Marcos Alonso at left wing-back.

Mediocre, Kevin? Really? I don't think so.

De Gea has played well enough to get MOTM for two games just in that first half. Shambles.

Ole not helped by defensive absentees but yet another hugely disjointed performance... being outplayed by mediocre opposition at home again!

    Man Utd 0-0 Villarreal

The game should be over. Villarreal have created six golden opportunities, but you have to credit David de Gea. He’s made some top saves and he’s the only player who has turned up tonight.

Man United can’t play that badly in the second half.

  7. 'Danjuma has been unplayable'published at 20:55 British Summer Time 29 September 2021

    Man Utd 0-0 Villarreal

    Ashley Young
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Villarreal gave outplayed Man United. They’ll be kicking themselves that they haven’t taken one of their chances.

Danjuma has been unplayable at times. If United play like this in the second half, they’re going to be in trouble.

A hubbub of disgruntleness at Old Trafford at half-time.

United have Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho and Paul Pogba all starting tonight but have rarely looked like carving Villarreal open.

There seems to be a distinct lack of plan from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his attacking players.

His side have fared even worse at the back and the visitors will be thinking how they are not in front. They could easily have scored six or seven.

Stevie Boy: If Pogba wants to be regarded as truly world class he has to turn up more than one in three games. For the price tag he should be taking games like this and driving United forward.

Salzburg have become the first team to win four penalties in the opening two games of a Champions League campaign.

Karim Adeyemi has scored the only goal from the spot and they lead Lille at the break.

They drew 1-1 in the opener with Sevilla, after scoring only one of three penalties. Adeyemi missed one of those.

Wolfsburg and Sevilla are drawing 0-0 in the other Group G game.

    Benfica 1-0 Barcelona

Barcelona's early game meltdown means Benfica lead. But the visitors have been decent. Certainly more of a presence in the game than that 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich.

    Man Utd 0-0 Villarreal

Villarreal should be ahead. Simple as that. They've been the better side, composed in every area until they reach the home box.

United have had chances, but nothing truly clear cut.

    This is a serious test.

That is a striker who is not in good form at the moment. Paco Alcacer has to do better there. It’s two on one.

You don’t get those opportunities normally at Old Trafford. Villarreal have had enough chances to win two games.

    Juventus 0-0 Chelsea

A good - if not action-packed - game between two quality sides.

Chelsea have had 72.5% of the ball and the only effort on target, but Juventus had the best chance.

Another big save from David de Gea!

Pau Torres is allowed to run and run and run into the home half before setting up Yeremi Pino for a low shot that the United keeper dives to save with one hand.

De Gea has been the Red Devils best player here.

Oh, so close for Manchester United. And nearly an own goal this home crowd would have loved. It is Albertro Moreno, the former Liverpool man, sending the ball past his charging goalkeeper but also just past the post.

Another big chance goes begging for the visitors.

They have a two on one with Diogo Dalot the one United defender. But when the pass to Paco Alcacer comes it sends him way too wide and the opportunity is gone.
