Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport: "Liverpool will need to be on it in the second leg and cannot perform at a sub standard level.

"Simone Inzaghi can get this team going, for 75 minutes this game could have gone either way but Liverpool's mettle, concentration and the clinical guys taking chances up front sets them apart."

Liverpool progressed on all six previous occasions they recorded a 2-0 away victory in the first leg of a two-legged European knockout tie. That includes against Leipzig in last season's Champions League round of last 16.

The only team to overturn a 2-0 home defeat in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie to progress to the next round was Man United against PSG in the 2018-19 round of last 16 (won second leg 3-1 to progress on away goals).

Liverpool have now equalled their goals tally from last season.

This campaign they have scored 97 goals in 38 matches in all competitions. In the entire 2020/21 season, the Reds netted 97 in 53 competitive games.

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi: "It is difficult to comment after a defeat like this. I'm proud of what the lads did tonight. We played a very good game, especially in the first 25 minutes of the second half, when we clearly deserved a goal.

"San Siro was fantastic tonight, the fans supported us from beginning to end. I'm sorry that we did not manage to give them the result we all wanted, but I think we probably played our best game of the season considering the opponents we were facing.

"Football is decided by small details and that Firmino header made all the difference tonight. This performance, however, should give us plenty of confidence because we played a great game. We did not deserve to lose but that's football. I think we can be proud because we played a great game against one of the best teams in Europe."

Bayern forward Thomas Muller told DAZN: "We have mixed feelings. Salzburg are a good team and the atmosphere was amazing.

"Compliments to the fans, that's how you want football to be. The conditions were great, which made it fun even though we suffered. Hats off to us for grinding out the 1-1 draw."

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "Incredibly physical game and we had to find a way. I think we started really well. I think we started really well and played around their formation. Then they came up a bit with the direct play and their switches to the wing-backs. We didn't defend that too well and our full-backs were alone in a one-on-one situation. It doesn't work properly like that. In a game like this you have to keep the ball longer and that didn't happen often enough. But you cannot come here and hope you have a brilliant day and that is the only chance to get a result. We did not have a brilliant day but a good enough day to be a deserved winner because we scored two wonderful goals. Yes, they had their moments but mainly counter-attacks when we lost the ball in the wrong spaces. I am happy with everything apart from Diogo [Jota] going off because of something around the ankle ligament. He could play on so maybe that is a good sign. The ankle was swollen at the break so we had to change.

"It was perfect how the boys reacted. All of them want to start. All my respect for Jordan Henderson's performance today and Naby [Keita], who came on. Luis [Diaz] is so natural when he comes on so that is all very helpful. Bobby Firmino needed time to get in the game because he got the balls in the most difficult areas. After he scored the goal you could see the confidence back and all of a sudden the ball was our friend again.

"After the game I couldn't care less but in the game we didn't finish situations often enough. Very often, their situations were offside. This really kills me. You can see it is offside but they let it run and then forget to raise the flag."

Liverpool have now set a new club European record of seven consecutive wins.

The Reds equal the longest Champions League winning streak by an English club: also seven by Man City (December 2020 to May 2021).

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, speaking to beIN SPORTS: "We need to be better than we were tonight to make sure we reach the last eight, but we have the benefit of having two goals. If we don't put in a good performance [at Anfield] we won't be through."

Jurgen Klopp is the eighth manager (and first German) to record 50 Champions League wins.

James Milner has been impressive throughout his career. I’ve always said age is nothing but a number. You can see that with the way he looks after himself.

I played with him at Aston Villa and England and you can see he’s still got the hunger. When you get older and want to stay at the top level you understand when you need to rest and how to recover and what to eat and drink.

Milly's 800 career games is an amazing achivement.

Inter Milan striker Edin Dzeko: "It's a pity to come out on the losing side after a match like this. We tried everything, we all gave our best in the 90 minutes but it was not enough. We must keep our heads up, we are aware that we have given everything. We will keep trying to the very end. It is not a positive result for us tonight but we will see."

Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich to DAZN: "In the first half, it wasn't quite enough.

"We weren't switched on enough winning the second balls, which kept giving Salzburg dangerous counter opportunities.

"We controlled the game better in the second half and applied more pressure. In the end we got the draw, which is fine for me."

Robert Lewandowski has failed to win a Champions League game for the first time since 13 March 2019 (3-1 loss at Liverpool).

The Bayern striker had won his last 22 Champions League matches, the longest winning streak by a player in history of the competition.

Bayern have (just about) extended the Champions League record for most successive away matches without defeat to 22.

The last time they lost one was against PSG in 2017. Bayern sacked Carlo Ancelotti afterwards.

This was Bayern Munich's first draw since the opening day of the Bundesliga season.

I was always impressed thay Liverpool managed to be up there with Man City with such a tight squad in terms of pure quality - 13 or 14. You thought they can’t keep doing it.

Jurgen Klopp said we’ll buy players when we can afford them and when the time is right and not go into debt. They’re in that position now. They had to push quite early with Luis Diaz. Other teams were sniffing round. The one weakness they had is gone now. They have the depth you need to push for a bunch of competitons in a row.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, speaking to BT Sport: "Tough place to come, a very good team, difficult to break down and I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the crowd. Set-piece again and it s good strength of ours. A good result to take back to Anfield.

"You try everything and they did very well defensively, but Bobby found the space and a great goal. It is a well-deserved win, very hard work.

"Everyone expects to be under pressure, it is the Champions League. The message before was you need to be ready to suffer and do the hard work. It is a very good performance, clean sheet and happy days."

Inter had to come out attacking more in the second half and they did. Whether it was the last pass or last cross it wasn’t there and they couldn’t score.

Good teams always find a way to win and Liverpool did that. From the first goal they controlled the game. They’re definitely one of the contenders to win the tournament.
