Wednesday's match in Italy sees the Premier League's second-placed side take on the team currently second in Serie A.

Reigning champions Inter ceded top spot in Italy to local rivals AC Milan at the weekend after a painful derby defeat was followed by Saturday's 1-1 draw at fellow title rivals Napoli.

Inter boss Simone Inzaghi, who took over from Antonio Conte in the summer, admits Liverpool are favourites, but feels his side can cause the Reds problems.

"On paper Liverpool are favourites. We know, and I've told the boys, that we need to go out there and play our game free from worry," said Inzaghi, who is leading Inter into their first Champions League knockout tie since 2012.

"In this type of match the level of determination will make the difference, and the boys have shown throughout the season that they have plenty of it.

"In the second half [at Napoli] we went out there with a great spirit and huge desire to not lose. That second half gives me faith for the match tomorrow. We respect them but we're not starting the game already beaten."

The bar was set last night for English sides in the Champions League this season.

Manchester City oozed class and confidence in their 5-0 first-leg demolition Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon, scoring four of their goals in the first half to essentially confirm their presence in the last eight.

Tonight, Liverpool are also at a side that are the reigning champions of their country and on the up under a progressive young coach - Simone Inzaghi's Inter Milan.

Below were the words of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold in the press conference ahead of tonight's Champions League last-16, first-leg tie at Inter Milan.

It's confident stuff. And well it might be coming from the player of a side still fighting on four fronts to win some silverware this season.

That last line is interesting, especially seen as tonight's game is in Europe's premier club competition:

"Every competition we are in we feel we can win, especially the Champions League."

  8. Fighting talk...published at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

“There is an expectation now, as a team and players, to win trophies. One trophy a season minimum is what we have to achieve.

"With the squad and the manager we have we should be winning trophies. It is expected now. It is not the stage now where we are happy to get to finals and it is a day out. There is expectation now to want to do it every season.

“We believe we can beat anyone on our day if we get it right. At the moment it is only the league that is not in our hands and anything can happen there. The other three competitions we believe we are able to win them.

“Cup competitions are always wide open. I wouldn’t say anyone is favourite. Leagues are a bit different when you look at squad depth and there are favourites, but cup competitions are a different ballgame. Every competition we are in we feel we can win, especially the Champions League.”
