  2. 'It was a real team effort'published at 22:59 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone: "I'm happy. So many people work hard so we can have these moments. It was a brilliant effort from the lads, one of our best games this season.

"We started with a 5-3-2 then changed to a 5-4-1 with Antoine Griezmann on the right of midfield and Renan Lodi growing more and more on the left.

"Lodi's doing really well. He had to wait a long time [to get in the side], but football is marvellous because when you train hard and are ready to go, there's always a chance for you.

"The defence were brilliant and Jan Oblak helped us remain calm throughout. It was a real team effort."

  3. 'A very complicated game'published at 22:57 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Ajax 0-1 Benfica (2-3 agg)

    Benfica

Benfica striker Darwin Nunez to CNN Portugal: "It was a very complicated game. We played against a team that plays very well, we knew we were going to suffer and we did.

"We had to enjoy it when we had the ball."

Thomas Tuchel has been mentioned as the potential next manager of Manchester United, because of the state Chelsea are in, but will he look at it and think 'wow, this is a massive job, where do we start?'

It needs cleaning out. They need a scouting system, they need a youth system again. It is basically starting from scratch.

They have let themselves run and thought money would bail them out, and it hasn't.

They need to start from the beginning, get the right personnel in and you are talking years before they will be able to compete with Manchester City.

  5. 'Let's go looking for more'published at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Ajax 0-1 Benfica (2-3 agg)

    Benfica

Benfica defender Nicolas Otamenti to CNN Portugal: "We managed to defend well, together. We knew it was important to try not to leave space for Ajax, they have great players.

"Then, more than ever, after the goal, it was to defend the result. I'm more than happy that we achieved the goal.

"Let's go looking for more. The Champions League is a different competition. With great games, against great teams. Tonight we played a great game."

  6. 'I don't get that'published at 22:51 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can't believe it when I hear that players want to move on. I don't get that.

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid forward Rodrigo de Paul: "We played a great game.

"We suffered when we had to and hit when we had the chance, here at a great stadium against a great team."

Diego Simeone is a controversial figure and he sprinted down the Old Trafford touchline celebrating at the final whistle.

The Argentinian knows how to get results though. Atletico Madrid picked up the La Liga title last season so can they go all the way in the Champions League this season?

  9. 'Creativity was lacking'published at 22:46 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Ajax 0-1 Benfica (2-3 agg)

    Ajax

Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag: “Our positional play was excellent. We were very good on the ball. I gave my players a big compliment.

"Maybe only the creativity was lacking. So it’s bitter that one moment of in-attention means you’re eliminated."

On waiting to make substitutions: "I was still hoping for a moment of magic, from Berghuis or Antony. We were dominating the match, so there was no reason to change things."

Genuine question - why is everyone having their usual overdramatic meltdown over United losing tonight? Maybe I'm missing something, but if we're as rubbish as everyone claims we are, then surely this isn't a surprise, and we were simply beaten by a currently more experienced team at this level.

  11. 'We wanted to be at this level'published at 22:42 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann: "I've played well over the last few weeks and I wanted to show what I could do and help the side, both attacking and defensively today.

"Everyone on the pitch did that. This is the way forward.

"The most important thing is how you feel. We wanted to show tonight that we're a really tough side to play against, we wanted to be at this level more consistently and go forward. It's brilliant to reach the last eight."

Robbie Savage asked earlier whether that would be Cristiano Ronaldo's last appearance in the Champions League.

He is 37 years old and Manchester United are currently in a battle to qualify for next season's competition.

They are in fifth, a point behind Arsenal in the Premier League table, but the Gunners have three games in hand.

Tottenham, Wolves and West Ham are still in the hunt too.

  13. 'Rashford looked absolutely terrible'published at 22:38 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I did not get Cristiano Ronaldo's role tonight, coming into midfield. I didn't get that. There was nothing in the box so if you do cross it, there is nobody there.

Marcus Rashford looked absolutely terrible when he came on. Why do they keep playing him when he doesn't want to be there, supposedly?

  14. 'Too early to think about gap from top teams'published at 22:36 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Manchester United

More from Ralf Rangnick to BT Sport on closing gap to Liverpool/Manchester City/Chelsea: "It's now too early. We still have another nine games to play in the Premier League. We will try to finish off this season in the highest possible level.

"We want to qualify for the Champions League again and we're fully aware that to do that we have to win most of those nine games.

"Right now to think about how we can close the gap to the top teams is too early. My focus is on finishing the highest possible level with this team then it is time to speak about other things."

  15. 'You have to score first against Atletico'published at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Manchester United

More from Ralf Rangnick to BT Sport: "Anyway, a very good first half and the second half was difficult to find the rhythm again.

"We know they are good at defending leads. We had one or two moments in the second half and there was a brilliant save from the goalkeeper. We were fully aware that against this team you need to score the first goal yourself.

"That was a foul for sure on Anthony Elanga but the referee and the linesman didn't see it that way. For me that was the only real moment, and the offside goal, that they scored with. Apart from that, we defended well and we were compact in their transition moments. There is nothing I can blame the team for in the first half."

  16. 'There was always somebody lying on the floor'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick speaking to BT Sport: "I think we played a very good first half - exactly the way we wanted to play with a high energy level but we couldn't convert that into one or two goals.

"We had a few good moments where we should have scored but we didn't. Conceding that counter-attacking goal just before half-time didn't make life any easier.

"It was hard in the second half and always interrupted. There was always somebody lying on the floor. I would also say some curious refereeing decisions. I wouldn't say they were decisive but at least he fell too often for those time-wasting antics and four minutes at the end added on was a joke for me."

  17. 'Full-backs did more than wingers going forward'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

For all the tempo being good tonight - we saw in the first-half a lot of quick, early passing - in the final third there was just nothing from Manchester United.

I have got to say, over the years when we look back at the United players who played out wide, got at the full-backs, put in crosses and made things happen, now all they get is players who stop the ball and pass back or inside.

There is no effect on the game from the flanks.

There were times tonight when the full-backs did more than the wingers going forward and that is not right.

  18. 'We fought hard to get what we deserved'published at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid captain Koke: "We deserved the win in the first leg, but fought so hard here to get what we deserved from this tie.

"We want to go far in the competition and it's incredible to still be in it. It's important for us to still be in the Champions League in what's an up-and-down season.

"For me, Jan Oblak is the best goalkeeper in the world. He's shown it once again tonight."

  20. 'Some players have been here too long'published at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2022

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico Madrid (1-2 agg)

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Harry Maguire, his decison making, he put David de Gea in a problem and the crowd get on his back. When he gets subbed 10 minutes later the crowd cheer.

The players have been here too long, a lot of them. They used to have a great production line of kids, people like Marcus Rashford look like they don't want to be here - he has definitely lost something, they need a scouting system which identifies younger players and brings them in.
