The goal Alisson is in looks wonky. It looks like what you'd see on a pub park. Just hammer it in straight.

Etienne Capoue is tripped by Fabinho in the Liverpool half. Central area.

Villarreal take it sharpish but Gerard Moreno can't keep the chipped ball in.

    Frustration for Jurgen Klopp.

He is prowling the touchline, understandably worried a bout what he is seeing. A booted, aimless ball forward by Ibrahima Konate will do the German's mood no good at all.

I'm struggling to work out what the big issue is there. Salah is far too strong. I don't think he does anything wrong. The keeper doesn't have control of the ball. It's no foul.

Chance for Liverpool! Their first real one of the game.

Diogo Jota gets in behind the defence and looks set to shoot, but back comes Raul Albiol to step across him. A combination of defender and keeper Geronimo Rulli stops any threat. The referee then blows for a foul to make sure Mohamed Salah - who had gathered the ball - can't follow up effectively. He pulls his shot wide anyway.

Villarreal are so much slicker in possession at the moment. They work the ball from keeper to Gerard Moreno in three passes. The forward has gone too early, though, and the offside flag goes up.

Thiago bossed the game at Anfield last week. He's not getting a second to breathe, let alone pick a telling pass here.

The two Liverpool full-backs, who have spent much of this season charging into the half of their opponent, are having to do a lot of defensive work here.

Such a tepid start. Liverpool are lacking quality when they get on the ball. The standards are so high as of late but this isn't the Liverpool we've seen in the recent past.

Naby Keita lines up a shot from range but sends it trickling wide. Waste of a decent opening, that.

Thiago does nothing to silence the crowd by sending a pass straight out of play.

Paul Walmsley: Possibly a mistake to be playing Keita over Henderson in a game like this. Big leadership needed.

    More danger for Liverpool.

Pervis Estupinan's cross from the left is met by Gerard Moreno. He sends it back across goal but Naby Keita is the first man there to smash the ball away.

What Villarreal are doing is getting the ball wide and putting in early crosses and loading the box. They're going for this.

They've surprised me with this start. It's one thing talking about a fast start but they've produced it.

A strong start. The perfect start.

Naby Keita latches on to a loose ball on the edge of the box and fires a shot against the bar and over, but the reason the ball was loose is because Sadio Mane is adjudged to have fouled Pervis Estupinan.

Not sure he did foul him, you know.

Every little mistake by a Liverpool player, every tackle by a Villarreal one is getting cheered to the rafters.

Dani Parejo tries to give them something to really cheer with an effort from range that flies wide. This after Francis Coquelin had gone down theatrically in the box looking for a penalty.
