  9. 'Beaming with pride'published at 17:41 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham (17:45 BST)

West Ham are the 17th Premier League club to feature in the Europa League group stage.

The east London outfit have not qualified for Europe that often, but going back there is a bit of pedigree on this stage with the Hammers having won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1965 and reached the final of the same competition in 1976.

As a long term Spurs fan I have to say I would prefer not to be in the Europa Conference League to focus on positive league finish.

In previous seasons these sides may have been preparing to meet in the Champions League but Rennes welcome Tottenham to France in the new third-tier European competition on Thursday.

This should be the toughest of Spurs' Europa Conference League Group G matches, with Vitesse and NS Mura the other sides completing the group.

  13. 'The past doesn't mean anything'published at 17:33 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

    Rennes v Tottenham (17:45 BST)

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo has warned his side their past Champions League exploits mean nothing when it comes to kicking off the Europa Conference League group stages.

“We looked at Rennes and analysed them as a team from the previous game and the game before,” Nuno said.

“We know we are going to find a tough match, a tough team, one that is very aggressive on the pressing, playing at home, we know it is going to be harder.

“We also have a lot of experience in Europe. The past doesn’t mean big things now, this is the present and we have to deal with the situation now and Rennes represent a tough, tough challenge for us and we have to raise up our standards.

“It is a realisation that this is the truth. The past doesn’t mean anything for us. What you did in football doesn’t mean anything. You have to challenge yourself every day - this is a message for life.”

  14. Lions predict a Dinamo winpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

Dinamo Zagreb v West Ham (17:45 BST)

Zagreb Zoo is just over the road from Dinamo's Maksimir Stadium.

And it looks like the lions have been asked to predict the outcome of the match.

I'm guessing that means a Dinamo win? Although I suppose you could entice them to eat at one of those boxes more than the other quite easily.

  18. 'We are supremely confident'published at 17:16 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

    Leicester v Napoli (20:00 BST)

Leicester were beaten by Slavia Prague in the Europa League last season, but along with Napoli are tipped to progress from a group that also contains Spartak Moscow and Legia Warsaw.

The eight Europa League group winners progress automatically to the last 16, with the runners-up playing the eight third-placed teams in the Champions League groups.

Kasper Schmeichel added: "It's never been our approach to look at others, we look at ourselves more than anything. When I look at our dressing room I have every reason to be supremely confident.

"There are top-class sides in this competition and others coming in from the Champions League. You can't always say because you don't know who is going to be coming into the competition."

City boss Brendan Rodgers has no fresh injury doubts for the Group C curtain-raiser, with James Justin (knee) and Wesley Fofana (broken leg) both long-term absentees.

Napoli travel to England after a superb start to their domestic season, having won their three opening games in Serie A.

This includes a 2-1 win over Juventus on Saturday, with highly rated centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly scoring an 85th-minute winner.

In attack they have Lorenzo Insigne, who has excelled for Italy in their record-setting run of 37 games unbeaten, during which they won Euro 2020 in the summer.

  19. 'The club is always looking to improve'published at 17:11 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

    Leicester v Napoli (20:00 BST)

    SchmeichelImage source, Getty Images

Kasper Schmeichel says it is important Leicester are not "complacent and timid" in their search for more success, starting with their Europa League opener against Napoli at 20:00 BST.

The Foxes reached the last 16 in 2020-21, along with winning the FA Cup and finishing fifth in the Premier League.

They and Italian side Napoli are two of the highest-rated sides in this season's competition.

"The club is always looking to improve," said Schmeichel.

"That's the most important thing to me, when you are in an organisation which has had success the hunger is still there.

"You cannot become complacent and timid. That's when you take the foot off the gas. We have always got to be looking for what's next. We can't use the past for anything - that past is done.

"There are many steps we can still take We are looking to improve every day and this season is another opportunity.

"We are in a very good place. We have had a lot of recent success but that means you have a choice to make. Are you content with that or do you want to progress and move on?"
