About 1,600 PSV fans have made the journey to Leicester from the Netherlands. Having finished runners-up to Ajax in the Dutch League last season, they once again find themselves in second spot - four points behind Ajax with six games left.

Sitting ninth in Ligue 1, the Europa League represents Lyon's best route back into Europe next season, so there is plenty at stake for them here.

It has been a difficult season for Peter Bosz's side, who have been used to challenging near the top of the French top-flight but have failed to string more than two league wins together this campaign.

They did see off Portuguese side Porto to reach this stage, though. And while they made tough work of it, they arrive in London off the back of a 3-2 win over Angers. They reached the semi-finals of the Europa League in 2016-17, losing to Ajax.

Tonight will be the first time they have faced West Ham, whose one previous experience of French opposition in Uefa competition came against Metz in one of the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup finals, when they lost the first leg 0-1 at home before winning 3-1 away.

Lyon's record in 21 previous European matches against English opposition is W7 D8 L6.

West Ham manager David Moyes has been playing down expectations in the build-up to this game, including pointing out it is only two seasons since Lyon were in the Champions League semi-finals.

    This is true.

But there are only two members of the starting line-up from their stunning quarter-final win over Manchester City who retain their places this evening.

Goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and midfielder Houssem Aouar remain at Lyon, others, like Memphis Depay, do not.

You will certainly be familiar with a few of Lyon's players.

Let's start with Tanguy Ndombele. Remember him? His huge money move to Tottenham was a disaster, but he's currently on loan with the French side and more than capable of doing some damage if he's in the mood.

Then there's Emerson, the left-back who made the odd appearance for Chelsea before moving to Ligue 1. Centre-back Jerome Boateng - he's got plenty of big-time experience from his time with Bayern Munich and the German national side.

Forward Moussa Dembele impressed at both Fulham and Celtic before joining Lyon, where he has scored at roughly a goal every two games.

And then there's Houssem Aouar - a regular presence in our daily gossip column, with Premier League clubs reportedly keen to recruit the creative midfielder. Ditto Maxence Caqueret, although he is yet to regain full fitness following injury and so does not feature tonight.

  8. Last chance for a trophypublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 7 April 2022

This is it then, the last avenues available to both West Ham and Leicester to end this season with any silverware.

The Foxes are a bit more accustomed to lifting trophies of late, having won the Premier League in 2016 and last year's FA Cup.

For the Hammers, it has been 42 years since their last major trophy win - the 1980 FA Cup.

This is the business end, though. Each tournament is getting further narrowed down to the best it has to offer, starting with the opponents each faces tonight. Lyon may be struggling domestically, but they have some serious talent in their side, while PSV are pushing Ajax all the way for the title in the Netherlands.

Leicester haven't had to wait quite so long since their last European quarter-final.

The casual football fan may forget that City actually reached the last eight of the Champions League in 2016-17 - their European adventure the main joy to be taken from a campaign that saw their Premier League title defence quickly crumble and Claudio Ranieri shown the exit.

The 2-1 aggregate loss to Atletico Madrid was their only European quarter-final... until tonight, against PSV in the inaugural Europa Conference League.

Time for the Foxes to step up too.

Dinamo Tblisi celebrate after scoring against West HamImage source, Getty Images

It is almost exactly 41 years since West Ham's last quarter-final tie in Europe.

That Cup Winners' Cup tie did not go exactly to plan, with Dinamo Tblisi turning up at the Boleyn Ground and smashing a Hammers side containing the likes of Trevor Brooking, Frank Lampard Sr and Billy Bonds. It was simply too big a deficit to overcome in the second leg. Little did they know then that it would be over four decades before they had the chance to make amends.

But here we are, with Lyon in town and West Ham eyeing a Europa League semi-final.

Time for the Hammers to step up.
