• West Ham failed to win the first leg of a major European knockout tie when playing at home for the fourth time.
• They were eliminated in each of the previous three instances – 1965-66 v Borussia Dortmund, 1980-81 v Dinamo Tbilisi and 2006-07 v Palermo.
• The Hammers have lost each of their past three away games in the knockout stages of major European competitions, failing to score in all three matches: 1999-2000 v FCSB (Uefa Cup), 2006-07 v Palermo (Uefa Cup), and in the last round of the Europa League against Sevilla.

West Ham striker Michail Antonio is backing the Hammers to win the Europa League this season - and is excited about tonight's quarter-final second leg against Lyon.

The tie is delicately poised after last Thursday's draw at London Stadium but Antonio is convinced they have the tools to not only reach the semi-finals but to ultimately win the competition.

"I truly believe we will win the Europa League," Antonio said on the Footballer's Football podcast.

"Lyon are a quality team but we held them for 50 minutes with 10 men. We have a great opportunity in Europe and I think we'll take it with both hands.

"When you look at the other teams left in the competition, sure Barcelona are there, but they're not the team they used to be.

"With the way we play, I 100% believe in us."

Fellow podcast host Callum Wilson was less confident: "I would like an English team to win the Europa League, but I'm very honest and a realist. West Ham aren't going to win it - come on."

On reaching this stage and aiming for a European semi-final: "For us to be at this level, it could be underestimated how far we've come and how well we're doing."

Can West Ham make it to the Europa League semi-finals?

That's the question we have been asking as the Hammers prepare to face Lyon in the second leg of their quarter-final on Thursday, with the tie locked at 1-1.

Here are some of your comments:

Chris: Think we needed a goal head start, a strong referee to stop the Lyon playacting, plus our away form's not been great recently. But fortune's always hiding!

Nick: I do think West Ham have the ability in the side to reach the semi-final. Lyon were better than I had expected, so I am not as confident as I was before the first leg. If West Ham play as well as they did in the second leg against Sevilla and overcome the tiredness that has understandably crept in recently, a semi-final place is there to be taken.

Peter: We survived a tough first leg, and got a draw. Our biggest obstacle to winning in Lyon is our small squad size. We are struggling with the amount of game time in our players. Week in week out, it's basically the same starting XI. It's even the same replacements each match also. We now must hope that the lads can pull it off again. COYI.

Chris: West Ham players are looking tired but I think that the adrenaline will kick in for this game. And what we learned from the game at home will help us get to the semi-finals.

The Lyon fans are certainly doing their bit right now. They're linked together, arms around shoulders, bouncing about in the stands.

If the home side can harness that, it will be some atmosphere for West Ham to combat.

The first leg of West Ham's historic Europa League quarter-final did not go as David Moyes would have liked.

Lyon started strongly, passed the ball well, and really took the sting out of the game. The Hammers had a few chances, but nothing major - the visitors appeared to be controlling it.

On the cusp of half-time, the controversial red card for Aaron Cresswell left players, staff and fans in complete shock. I was terrified we were going to let the game slip away due to a poor decision and, inevitably, Moyes made changes to bring a more defensive approach for the second half.

Jarrod’s Bowen goal lifted the atmosphere but it didn’t last long as very poor defending led to Tanguy Ndombele’s equaliser. It was not our greatest game, and Moyes will want the squad to perform a lot better for the second leg.

However, I do believe we showed great strength to hold Lyon to a draw, despite playing with 10 men for more than half of the game. Since the first leg, Lyon have picked up injuries to Anthony Lopes, Houssem Aouar and last week's goalscorer, Ndombele. This should fuel the Hammers to snatch a result in France and progress to the semi-finals.

I feel confident we can win, but we need a team performance to match the Sevilla game or this could be the end of our European campaign.
