The first goalless draw of the League One season comes at The Valley.

It wasn't a classic but both teams will be content to take a point.

You'd expect these two to be challenging at the top of the table come the end of the season.

Jayden Stockley had the home side's best chance in the first half and Owls skipper Barry Bannan nearly scored a brilliant late winner.

Wednesday striker Callum Paterson had to be stretchered off after 10 minutes after a heavy collision with Stockley as he cleared a corner.

Oh, what a goal that would have been!

Owls skipper Barry Bannan cuts out a poor clearance from home goalkeeper Craig MacGillvary, pops it through the legs of one Charlton defender and then goes around another but slides his shot on his weaker right foot just wide of the post.

Sheffield Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa goes through the back of Jayden Stockley on the halfway line and the referee shows him a yellow card.

    Big chance for the hosts!

They get in down their left and the low ball into the middle is only cleared as far as the on-rushing Albie Morgan but, with Sam Hutchinson charging out at him, he sends his effort high and wide.

A late goal from substitute Sam Surridge earned Stoke a first opening day win in 11 years.

An entertaining game saw three goals in four minutes in the first half and it looked as though Reading would share the points before Surridge's late intervention.

Stoke boss Michael O'Neill said he felt his side deserved the win and that his players were boosted by the return of fans.

"It was a great day for the supporters... you could see the difference in the players. They had a real edge to them, having the crowd back," he said.

The rain is lashing down again just now.

Anything on target and along the turf could cause the goalkeepers a real issue.

As yet both keepers have been mere spectators today.

Addicks winger Diallang Jaiyesimi shows neat control to get into the area but he lashes his shot high and wide of Bailey Peacock-Farrell's near post.

Into the last 20 minutes here and, despite the fact there has still not been a shot on target, I feel like there's going to be a sting in the tail.

Is that just early season optimism on my part? Quite possibly, yes.

Wednesday full-back Liam Palmer cuts inside off the left and hits a shot that deflects behind for a corner.

Addicks striker Jayden Stickley heads it clear but the Owls win another corner.

Sheffield Wednesday winger Andre Green is clattered in to as he clears a bouncing ball at a corner.

He's subbed off for Marvin Johnson but not as a result of the knock.

The former Aston Villa man, who had a loan spell at Charlton a couple of seasons ago, hasn't really been in it today.

    Now then.

Sean Clare fouls Barry Bannan on the halfway line as the Owls launch a counter and the Scot bumps the ex-Wednesday man to the ground in retaliation.

The referee stops play and books Bannan. Probably about right.

Charlton striker Jayden Stockley shows good movement to get across Sam Hutchinson but his shot from 18 yards is blocked behind for a corner.

The home team are just starting to move the ball around with a bit more purpose now.

Sean Clare pulls the ball back to Albie Morgan on the edge of the area but he can't make good connection and the ball flies into the stand.

    A timely intervention.

Full-back Adam Matthews swings a wicked cross into the area for Addicks striker Jayden Stockley to attack.

The big centre-forward gets up well but can only flick it past the post.

Replays show he was having his shirt pulled by Owls defender Jack Hunt. A risky strategy from the former Bristol City man but the ref didn't spot it.

Owls skipper Barry Bannan chips a lovely ball over the top for Florian Kamberi but he can't bring it under control and the chance goes.
