    FT: Preston 1-4 Hull City

Promoted Hull City's 4-1 victory away at Preston was one of the contenders for result of the day.

The Tigers fell behind in the opening 10 minutes but hit back superbly, with Andy Cannon's injury-time goal putting the seal on a highly satisfactory return to the Championship.

"To come anywhere in the Championship and win is very tough, so to come here and win in the manner we did is brilliant for everyone," said boss Grant McCann.

"I was really proud of the players and the fans and to send them home happy with four goals and three points is great for us. It's a good start for us and hopefully we continue with that."

  3. New Swans boss tastes defeat in first gamepublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 7 August 2021

    FT: Blackburn 2-1 Swansea

New Swansea head coach Russell Martin's first game in charge ended in disappointment after his side fell to a 2-1 defeat against Blackburn Rovers.

The Swans fell 2-0 behind before a debut Jamie Paterson goal got them back into it, with the ex-MK Dons boss saying he had liked what he had seen after limited preparation time.

"We've only had three days' work so it's never going to be perfect or the finished picture. I really liked some of what I saw," he said.

"By the end of the game, it looked like how we wanted it to look with the other team holding on and us really going for it. That's testament to the guys' mentality."

  4. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 7 August 2021

    Charlton 0-0 Sheff Wed

Not the best of halves it has to be said.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Callum Paterson had to be stretchered off in the first 10 minutes after a heavy collision with Charlton counterpart Jayden Stockley in the area as he cleared a corner and, perhaps understandably, the match has struggled to really get going after that.

Stockley has had the game's best chance but he headed wide when well placed 12 yards from goal.

A deep free-kick into Jayden Stockley causes trouble in the Owls area but they scramble it away.

Charlton are understandably looking to go direct towards the big striker when they have the chance.

It's absolutely pouring down at The Valley just now.

There's not been much going on in the game so far, with both sides struggling to fashion clear chances.

  7. Rooney 'delighted' with point after difficult build-uppublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 7 August 2021

    FT: Derby 1-1 Huddersfield

Wayne Rooney was happy with a "very good point" as his Derby side drew 1-1 at home to Huddersfield.

Curtis Davies put the Rams ahead after 39 minutes but they couldn't hold on until the break as Naby Sarr equalised, but Rooney was pleased with the performance after a difficult build-up to the new campaign.

"I thought it was a decent performance and a very good point because it's been a long pre-season," he said.

"The young lads coming off the bench made a difference today. I'm delighted with the point."

Into eight minutes of time added on at the end of the first half.

If you're just joining us, Wednesday forward Callum Paterson had to be stretchered from the field after a heavy collision with Jayden Stockley as he cleared a corner in the opening 10 minutes.

Albie Morgan smashes the free-kick over the bar.

The Addicks midfielder gets decent power on it but it flies over.

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 44 mins

    Charlton 0-0 Sheff Wed

Owls defender Sam Hutchinson tends to pick up the odd booking or two and he's got one on the opening day.

He upends Sean Clare 25 yards from goal and into the book he goes.

  11. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Charlton 0-0 Sheff Wed

The visitors still very much enjoying the lion's share of possession.

Owls skipper Barry Bannan sends in a corner towards the near post that Sam Hutchinson can only head over the crossbar.

  12. Postpublished at 36 mins

    Charlton 0-0 Sheff Wed

Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan has been a stand-out performer in the Championship for the past five years or so and he's shown a few touches in this game today that suggest he could be a class above in League One.

He sends a beautiful ball down the inside right channel with the outside of his left foot that you could put in an art gallery.

  13. YELLOW CARDpublished at 33 mins

    Charlton 0-0 Sheff Wed

Jayden Brown pinches the ball off Charlton defender Adam Matthews on the halfway line and Matthews shows some decent rugby skills to bring Brown down.

As clear a booking as you'll see all day.

  14. Robins disappointed as Blackpool strike latepublished at 18:04 British Summer Time 7 August 2021

    FT: Bristol City 1-1 Blackpool

    Chris MartinImage source, Rex Features

Promoted Blackpool scored a 93rd-minute equaliser through Shayne Lavery to deny Bristol City an opening day win.

Striker Chris Martin had put the Robins in front shortly before the break and he said disappointment was the overriding feeling in the home dressing room.

"We can't get too down about it. There's 45 games to go and there’s lots of things we did very well so we’ll look back on it and try to make the wrongs right," he said.

"There was good intensity in our play and we were perhaps a touch unfortunate not to get a second goal."

Martin added that improving the squad's fitness levels had been a focus of pre-season and that it felt great to get off the mark on the opening day.

"I feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve been in for many, many years. As a striker, it's always nice to get off the mark early doors."

The visitors win their first corner of the game.

Skipper Barry Bannan swings in a dangerous ball that is cleared for another corner on the opposite side.

This time Lewis Wing bends it in and Addicks striker Jayden Stockley heads it away.

  16. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Charlton 0-0 Sheff Wed

Charlton striker Jayden Stockley is down after a collision with Owls goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell from a corner.

He's going to be ok to continue fortunately.

First real big chance and it goes the way of the hosts.

Jayden Stockley gets free from a free-kick but from 12 yards out he sends his header well wide.

This is Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Dennis Adeniran's first game at this level and I think he's been fouled three times already.

The former Everton man will look to make his mark for the Owls this season.

Sheffield Wednesday are still enjoying the majority of possession but they're yet to create a clear opening with it.

There were no goalless draws in the other 11 League One games today...

Think the game is just going to take a few minutes to get going again here after Sheffield Wednesday forward Callum Paterson had to be taken off.

Always tough to see a player stretchered from the field after a collision like that.
