Jez Orbell: "As individuals each and every one of you are incredible. You have all gotten us to this moment by being driven to succeed. By using your personal strengths and commitment to be part of a team, it has allowed us to achieve great things together. None of us could have done this alone. By making the sacrifices you have made you have put us on the brink of history. For that I thank you. Go out and make history and make memories that will live in the hearts of the nation forever.”

  3. 'As a goalkeeper, there's nothing to lose'published at 12:05 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former Chelsea and Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini told BBC Radio 5 Live about how a goalkeeper would prepare for the prospect of a penalty shootout.

"As a goalkeeper, there's nothing to lose. There's a lot of mental (pressure) on serious penalties. It's not just one, it's five.

"Everyone has got their own approach. It should be: 'the way YOU feel it'. Some, they just go with their instinct.

"Obviously for the penalty takers - it's the opposite! You have everything to lose! You should expect to score, but if you miss - it's disaster. And in a final - it can haunt you forever"

  4. 'Donnarumma up there with the best'published at 11:57 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Italian former Chelsea and Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about Sunday's final between England and Italy, starting with his thoughts on the current Italy number one Gianluigi Donnarumma:

"For a 22-year-old, he's doing pretty well! He's up there with the best in the world.

"He's only 22, but let's not forget he made his debut at 16. So he has already six years of experience playing Serie A and he played such an important part in AC Milan's season. Finally after some time they managed to qualify for the Champions League. He was really important for that team.

"It's a young age, but he has a lot of experience"

  7. Southgate has been the 'major difference'published at 11:37 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

Former Football Association chairman Greg Dyke says a host of factors have contributed to England's success, though he believes the leadership of Gareth Southgate he been crucial.

"There's a whole set of things that have happened, including a bit of luck. You don't win matches on skill alone," he told BBC Sport.

"But for this England team, I think Gareth has been the major difference. He's done a brilliant job as manager and done a brilliant job in terms of the relationship between the England team and the public.

"I think Gareth has elevated the job. He has made it a much better professional job, but also his relationship with media, fans and players, I think he’s so professional."

Liam Forsyth: In response to Nathan (10:22) bringing up the no direct free kicks. I too am guilty. I turned to my friend before it and said 'This has shades of Trippier 2018 all over it...'

It's all becoming clear now. No wonder Damsgaard scored.

  9. Arsenal and Man Utd back Adidas Common Goal movepublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

Sportswear giant Adidas have joined the Common Goal fight against global poverty.

The company has pledged one percent of its global net sales of footballs to Common Goal until 2023.

Two of Adidas' major clients - Arsenal and Manchester United - have already used their social media platforms to back the move.

United midfielder Juan Mata, who was one of Common Goal's founders, is a long-time Adidas client also.

In addition to generating money, Common Goal believe the partnership will further increase awareness about the organisation and its aims.

  11. England 'pinched ideas' from Spainpublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

Here is more from Football Association chairman Greg Dyke on how England restructured its youth development pathway in order to produce better players.

"We did two things in my time as chairman, one we put a lot of extra money into the England set-up. And as I was the chairman, you went to the professionals for what to do in football, I had to raise the money. So I closed quite a few things down to put the money into that structure.

"Secondly, we went to Spain and talked to the Spanish FA, who were the world champions at the time, and asked them how they did it and they very nicely told us. So we pinched it.

"It was about getting a flow-through, which Gareth (Southgate) has done brilliantly. What the Spanish said was the managers of our teams, from the under-15s upwards, all had breakfast together twice a week to discuss players. If you remember the old England structure that isn't what happened. There was a degree of rivalry. Would he play or would he not? They didn't see that their job was all about getting the best players up into the England team, and I think that has changed the England team."

  14. 'A wonderful moment'published at 10:51 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

Former Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has been speaking to BBC Sport about England's run to the Euro 2020 final and the secret behind the team's resurgence in recent years.

Reflecting on Wednesday's semi-final win over Denmark, he said: "I was absolutely exhausted by the end of the game. It was quite a tight game, we could have easily lost even though we were the better side.

"I was there in 1966 and saw some of games and none of us ever thought it would be 50-odd years before we were there again, so it was a wonderful moment."

@ben_footer: Italy beat a poor Turkish side, an ageing Welsh team and a poor Swiss side ranked two places lower than the Mexicans. All of those games were at home. They needed extra time to beat Austria, and beat Belgium with a half fit KDB and no Hazard. England win 2-0.

  19. 'Engender a feeling of calm and confidence'published at 10:10 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England boss Roy Hodgson was asked by BBC Radio 5 Live what his team-talk would be before Sunday's game.

"I wouldn’t be saying too much. I can't speak for Gareth but I imagine that he too would be looking to engender a feeling of calm and confidence.

"He would probably say ‘listen we are well prepared for this game, you know what to do, we can’t prepare more, it is all a question now of how the game pans out and how we perform on the day'.

"I'd be very surprised if he gave a Churchillian-type talk before the players leave the field as to be honest, that’s thing of the past.

"Everyone understands now that it’s a more scientific approach rather than screaming and shouting at people and insisting they win every challenge at every opportunity."

  20. Van Gaal set for Netherlands return - againpublished at 10:02 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is edging closer to returning as Netherlands coach for a third time after meeting with Dutch football association officials to discuss the job, according to local media reports.

The reports said the 69-year-old held talks at his home in Portugal on Thursday with KNVB directors Nico-Jan Hoogma and Eric Gudde, who are responsible for the choice of a new coach after Frank de Boer’s resignation.

De Boer resigned after their Euro 2020 last-16 defeat to Czech Republic on June 27 and the KNVB said it would move swiftly to find a replacement, with the team set to resume their World Cup qualification campaign in September.

Van Gaal, who officially retired in 2019 but stepped away from the game two years earlier after leaving Manchester United, had two previous spells at the helm of the national team.

His first stint ended in 2002 after the Dutch failed to qualify for the World Cup, but he returned for a more successful spell in 2012, guiding the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the World Cup two years later.
