If you watch the Denmark game back, within 20 minutes you can tell the ref was consistently giving soft fouls for both teams. As a manager or player you should notice this. Yes it was a soft penalty but overall the two best teams in the tournament are in the final so it's fair enough. Nobody mentions Italy were largely outplayed by Spain in the other semi!

  2. Van Dijk and Gomez in Liverpool squadpublished at 09:44 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    BBC Sport

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have both been named in Liverpool’s squad for their pre-season training camp in Austria.

The pair have both been out for extended periods of time with major knee injuries.

Van Dijk suffered his against Everton on 17 October, whilst Gomez was injured on England duty in November.

It is anticipated both players will be involved in the group sessions.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has named a 34-man squad, which also includes new signing Ibrahima Konate, a £36m arrival from RB Leipzig.

Liverpool remain the only club not to have any pre-season matches posted on the Premier League website.

A planned double-header with Manchester United was scrapped following the trouble at Old Trafford that forced the Premier League game between the pair called off in May.

It is anticipated the Reds will play at least one game at Anfield, along with some other matches elsewhere.

  3. 'There will be a lot of tension'published at 09:36 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England boss Roy Hodgson managed in Italy earlier in his career so knows all about the Italian game and the country's passion for football.

He was asked by BBC Radio 5 Live what he expects from Sunday's game at Wembley.

"I think we are talking about two nations with a similar passion for football. Everything that is going on in England is happening in Italy and Roberto Mancini is getting the same accolades as Gareth Southgate, and quite rightly so.

"There will be a lot of tension. They have quite an experienced team, England have less experience cap for cap.

"But they will more than aware of what England are good at and they will rely very heavily on their defensive quality, especially the back four and two defensive midfield players, they will be key for them.

"Their major fear will be if they concede an early goal as England have a good defence and good attack as well, so they will be worried if they went behind early and it would be a long haul to get into it.

"They are good going forward but what’s really impressed me is the energy and enthusiasm of their front six in terms of pressing. They work incredibly hard to win the ball back and that’s not something I’ve always seen from an Italy team."

We should rightly respect Italy and recognise the challenge but don't forget they were ran very close by both Austria and Spain. Difficult, but possible.

  5. 'The whole squad has been fantastic'published at 09:22 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England boss Roy Hodgson has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about the Three Lions' performance in Euro 2020 so far and their chances in Sunday's final.

"I think the whole squad has been quite fantastic. It’s amazing you can go through a tournament and there’s not one player who hasn’t come out covered in glory.

"We are a critical nation in terms of football because it means so much to us. But after each game played there has been nothing but praise showered on the players, including the substitutes. Definitely a first in my experience."

  6. Southgate shared England 'frustration'published at 09:15 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    Sir Trevor Brooking
    West Ham legend

Sir Trevor Brooking was pivotal to getting Gareth Southgate involved in the set-up and says the pair instantly shared common ground.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I liked him, I warmed to him. We were both frustrated that the national team wasn’t doing well and about the style of football being played at some clubs. We agreed on the philosophy of playing out from the back, and he was very good at speaking to clubs and academies and getting them on our side."

  7. 'The idea of clubs from Europe coming to take our youngsters was unheard of'published at 09:08 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    Sir Trevor Brooking
    West Ham legend

Former FA Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking says English football's governing body is a year out from the completion of a decade-long plan to bring success to England. He says the building of a footballing hub, St George's Park, was critical.

“That was the big breakthrough. It is up in Burton, in the middle of the country because we had always been criticised for players always having to go down south. I went to ask Gareth (Southgate) if he would take the under-21s and under-16s and working with them to get them to play the way we wanted. He agreed to do it; it was a 10-year plan from 2012, so we are a year short, but it was about playing out from the back. There are dozens of great people who have worked at St George’s Park who have made that happen.

“The idea of clubs from Europe coming to take English youngsters was unheard of. Gareth (Southgate) has a fantastic knowledge of individual players and their characters in order to get the best out of the squad. He is perfect for the next few years.”

  9. 'It is a club-like atmosphere'published at 08:58 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    Sir Trevor Brooking
    West Ham legend

Speaking to BBC 5Live Breakfast, Sir Trevor Brooking lauded England's team spirit, for which he credited manager Gareth Southgate.

“The team spirit is fantastic," he said.

"They do have set backs, but good teams somehow get out of it. They’ve worked hard to make their own luck and away from the pitch, you can see the players enjoy each other’s company, very much like a good club side.

"I don’t think the international team has had that before and that is great credit to Gareth (Southgate). It is very much a club-like atmosphere.”

  10. 'We'll be there or thereabouts for the next 10 years'published at 08:52 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    Sir Trevor Brooking
    West Ham legend

Former West Ham player and manager Sir Trevor Brooking has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live ahead of Sunday's Euro 2020 final. While he is hopeful of victory for England, he is confident this is just the start of a successful decade or so.

“You’ve got to believe. Italy are a really strong side and knocking Belgium out and then Spain shows their quality. England, in front of a home crowd at Wembley, are going to be tough to beat. It is going to be a fantastic occasion," he said.

“Italy have a lot of experience. Their two central defenders (Leonardo) Bonucci and (Giorgio) Chiellini, I think their combined age is 70, but Harry (Kane) is going to find them tough (to face). Jorginho in the midfield will match up against Mason Mount, who he plays with at club level, so that battle is going to be a key one.

“(Federico) Chiesa has got a couple of goals for them and he’ll be on the right-hand side. Luke Shaw has had a great last two or three games, so the Shaw-Chiesa battle is another key one.

“For me, I wouldn’t say there will be more than a goal in it and it could go to extra time. It is that close to call, I think.

“We’ve got a lot of talent coming through. I hope Sunday is the one, but I guarantee that we’ll be there or there about in the next 10 years."

I think England have been a better team than their opponents so far in the Euros, on paper anyway, hence I haven't been nervous for the matches. However, Italy look very very good and I'm nervous for Sunday !

I agree James. Italy have been very, very impressive this tournament. Will be a tough test for England.

This Euros landed in an odd year so I have had to change all my usual superstitions to as near their opposite as possible. Haven't used them all up yet so for the final I will finally predict an England win, praise the player I want to play well and invite my Welsh father-in-law to watch the game with me.

  17. Arsenal close to Lokonga signingpublished at 08:11 British Summer Time 9 July 2021

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Arsenal are closing in on the €20m (£17.2m) signing of Belgian Under-21 international midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht.

The youngster was allowed to miss Anderlecht’s pre-season training camp in order to complete the move and it is expected he will have a medical within the next 48 hours before signing a long-term contract with the Gunners.

Lokonga is viewed as part of Mikel Arteta’s long-term overhaul of an Arsenal squad that finished eighth in the last two seasons – their worst successive finishes in over 40 years – and will not play in Europe next season for the first time since 1996.
