After Italy missed the last World Cup, former Leicester and Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri says compatriot and Italy boss Roberto Mancini has restored pride to the national team.

"I’m very happy because there are some young players and, of course, some players with experience like Georgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Jorginho. There is a very good blend.

"It’s very important that we come back to a high level. It’s important for all Italian people, not only for the fans.

"We now have the right mentality. Yes, we have the Italian soul - we stay together, we suffer, we fight - but Mancini wants to give to the Italian team the happiness to play forward, to attack in every situation.

"Our mentality has changed in two years. When it’s possible, we want to dominate the opponent. When it’s not possible, we try to win the match."

The English FA have been fined €30,000 for the use of laser pointer disturbances during the national anthems and setting off fireworks in the victory over Denmark.

A laser pointer was directed at Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel during the penalty.

I've been to a couple of England games and the atmosphere was incredible - this is only going to be enhanced.

Like all huge games, they can go either way with the pressure or the energy it gives you. What we are seeing at the moment is the fans and players are on the same page.

The players will thrive off the atmosphere like they did at the Denmark and Germany games.

It is a plus for us to play at Wembley. The only thing I would say is that Italy have played two games there recently so they will be used to it and a lot of them are very experienced players.

The tactical battles will be the key.

Brad Pederson: A new superstition for this tournament. Our beautiful daughter was born less than 48 hours after the dire 0-0 draw with Scotland. Since then we've watched every game together and been alternating matching kits. For the final we're back to white!

  6. Mount to nullify Jorginho?published at 12:00 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

    Danny Murphy

Italy got a bit of luck in the Austria and Spain games. Don't get me wrong, they are a good side, but what the Spanish did really well was they nullified Jorginho and Marco Verratti.

I think Mason Mount will be given the job of stopping Jorginho and Kalvin Phillips will try to stop Verratti.

That will be the key area for me.

First it was the Championship, then it was the Premier League's turn, now he's made a huge mark on the international stage.

Since Kalvin Phillips set up Raheem Sterling for England's opening goal of Euro 2020 against Croatia, fans across England and beyond have started to take notice.

Leeds United supporters have known about the 25-year-old's talent for years, but not quite as long as his first coach.

The holding midfielder played youth football for his local side Wortley for seven years, with Elland Road scouts soon taking notice and snapping him up for Leeds' academy, aged 14.

Nothing is going wrong for Gareth Southgate.

What's really obvious is the togetherness that he and his staff have. The players are playing for the manager - we can see that - but I think the staff are all on the same page.

I know Steve Holland well and I know that they work really well together and bounce off each other, I think that's really key.

Gareth has not just picked the right teams and made the right decisions but he's actually conducted himself in the media with such charm and charisma. The one word is humility with Gareth - that's why he engages with people so much. He's a realist and people relate to him because he's a humble man.

He's done tremendously well. He's probably going to be the first one to say he doesn't want a statue or things like that because he's not that type but he'll probably deserve one if we win it.
